LR Baggs Anthem SL Installation

06:13
This is a video of me installing and testing an acoustic guitar pickup. It's a very simple process, which anyone could do. I explain the tricky bits (not that there are many) here. The LR Baggs Anthem SL is a great design, as it has both an internal microphone for general sound capture and an element that goes under the bridge saddle to get more low end. The two parts can be blended and tweaked for the desired sound. All music is played by me on this instrument and pickup. For recording, I ran the guitar through an LR Baggs Para DI and into a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. I haven't experimented much with settings, and suspect I could get a really great sound with some tweaking.

Opening Philip Glass - Electric Guitar

06:02
A piano piece by the minimalist composer. I did this in two parts, recording each in a single take. It was surprisingly hard to play cleanly...I've played it on the piano and in instrumental ensembles in the past, but always wanted to try an electric version. Recorded directly into a THR-10 on my homemade guitar.

Hand Tool Bass Build Five

09:52
This is the fifth part of a video diary of a bass build, using only hand tools and undertaken in a small apartment in Tokyo. In this video, I finish the pickups, including winding the coils, then explain the use of a router plane to make cavities in the neck. Actually, I change neck blanks due to a weakness in the original piece, then put in the reinforcements, the truss rod, flatten the fingerboard and neck blank, and finally glue everything together.

Rebuilding a vintage Colnago

01:37
A step-by-step video showing the assembly of my dream bike. I've been searching for parts for the last month and they've been arriving from all over the world. Finally, the last parcel - a vintage Campagnolo Super Record seatpost - came today, so it was time to put it together. The backing track is played on a guitar I made by hand in the same small apartment in Tokyo.

Hand Tool Bass Build One

08:36
This is the first part of a video diary of a bass build, using only hand tools and undertaken in a small apartment in Tokyo. The instrument will have a Japanese pine body, a maple neck (with carbon fibre reinforcement), a ‘mystery wood’ fingerboard and handmade pickups. It will be a 5-string instrument, is loosely based on a Jazz Bass style, and is my first ever time making one of these. In this video, I explain the woods, then prepare and glue up the body blank using hand saws and planes.

Guitar Aerobics Week 1

09:03
This is Week One of my year going through Troy Nelson’s Guitar Aerobics (Hal Leonard ISBN 978-1-4234-1435-3). At the moment, I’m not able to get to lessons, so have put this book into my regular practice rotation – although I still do lots of other stuff too. It’s a fun thing that keeps me on my toes. This is, in fact, my second time through the book, and I’m going through it more carefully now, making sure I cover material I didn’t work so hard on the first time! It takes about 15 minutes per day. You do every exercise about 10x each at gradually increasing tempi. If you can’t manage an exercise, practice it until you can! Some are easy – even too easy – and some are difficult right from the get-go. In my videos, I show each exercise twice through at the slowest, at a medium and then at the fastest tempo, but I do, in fact, play all repetitions of every exercise at every tempo each day.

Hand Tools for Electric Guitar Building

35:30
This is a video showing the different hand tools I use when making electric guitars and basses. I discuss seven types – saws, planes, chisels, sharpening equipment, drills, rasps and files, and others. Then, I talk briefly about which are really needed for starting out in hand tool building. The music is played on instruments I made by hand with these tools. An LP-type guitar and a bass I finished recently. To see these exact tools in use, and to understand how I apply them in each situation, you can look at some of my build threads and videos. I should explain that I am a self-taught amateur, and there are many different ways of doing things – some of which are doubtless better than mine! I also recommend checking out the forums for instrument building at mylespaul.com, tdpri.com and talkbass.com. There are many other sites, but those are the three I tend to go to the most, anyway. The Katana Fret Levelling System

09:25
This is a quick review/overview of the Katana Fret Levelling System from Rectify Master, with some tips and tricks for use . I said I’d do this video ages ago, but have only just gotten around to it. Please forgive my dodgy playing! If you are interested in their stuff, their website is http://rectifymaster.com. I am NOT affiliated with the company in any way. The tool is designed to level frets while the neck is under string tension. I have been using it for more than a year and really like it. I use it on all my guitars with very good results.

Vintage Hand Plane Restoration - Part Two

12:49
This is a restoration of an English-made Stanley Bailey #7 from the 1950s or thereabouts. In this video, I clean up the frog and other hardware, such as the lever cap and adjustment wheel, then sharpen the new blade, reassemble it all and test the result out. The plane is really good. I'm very happy indeed with it. Blade and cap iron from http://www.hocktools.com.

09:57
This is a restoration of an English-made Stanley Bailey #7 from the 1950s or thereabouts. In this video, I flatten the sole and sides, then disassemble, clean and re-lacquer the plane body. The goal here is not a pristine, museum-quality restoration, but rather getting the tool back to good working order.

Halo Sport Test for Guitar - the Conclusion

12:51
NOTE - I've had a bunch of people comment - usually in insulting language - on the fact that I should be wearing the headphones during all practice. That's not true. The Halo manual clearly states that this is not the case (see pages 11-13). You are only supposed to wear the headphones for 20 minutes of "Neuropriming": "After you complete a Neuropriming session, the benefits will apply to any training you do in the next 60 minutes, whether you continue to wear the headset or not. You can keep it on to to listen to music or take it off when the Neuropriming session is over. There is no difference in performance either way. " I have pointed this out to everyone who made such a comment. Some of them deleted their comments, but I have yet to receive a single apology or acknowledgement that they were wrong, either public or private. This is the last video in my test of the Halo Sport. As I didn't reach the goals I set for myself in the time allotted and feel that there were no gains that couldn't be otherwise explained by practice, I have now returned the headset. Even though the product didn't work out for me, I will say that the return process was very straightforward and hassle-free.

Workbench Guitar...and stompbox

04:34
Here, I turn my old workbench top into a telecaster and a stompbox. One-piece maple neck with a walnut skunk stripe, handwound pickups and Callaham parts on the guitar. The stompbox has a piezo disc inside, and, for the demo, I am running it through eq and reverb. I wound up overdubbing the vocals again and adding effects because I really hate to hear my own singing. Distortion is a Mooer Black Secret. The video touches on most things, but there are a few times I either didn't have the camera or forgot to turn it on. That's why a lot of the neck carving is missing, for example.

Teisco Restoration Part One

12:32
This is part one of my restoration of a beautiful 1965 guitar made by Teisco. I'm doing it for a collector who sent me the instrument and asked me to make it playable. These were regarded by a lot of people as "cheap" instruments back in the day, but are becoming more and more sought after. With a little work, they can be surprisingly good. The restoration is planned to be pretty minimal. There will be a board levelling, a refret, a new nut, some work on the electronics and a general cleanup, but I want to keep the history of some 50 years of playing, so I won't be refinishing to make it look new. The fretwire is slightly wider than before (by 0.4 of a millimetre) and stainless steel, so it won't need to be replaced anytime soon.

Teisco Three

The final part of my restoration of a wonderful 1965 guitar (a Teisco YG-6). This includes the electronics, the setup and a short demo. I should apologise for the last, as my playing is horrible, but there were no real guitarists around. I have been restoring this for someone, but really wish this guitar belonged to me...

Some of them deleted their comments, but I have yet to receive a single apology or acknowledgement that they were wrong, either public or private. Given that they have a 30-day money-back policy, I decided to see if the Halo Sport could help me become a better guitarist. I will be testing it over 20 days and finding out whether it really makes a difference.

William Croft: Ground and Sarabrande

05:04
Two movements from William Croft's Suite in C Minor. This is from a concert held as part of the 2016 Liberlit Conference at Tokyo Joshi Daigaku in Japan. We have no idea why Croft chose the spelling "Sarabrande". Perhaps he lost a bet. The harpsichordist is Ayako Otomo and the instrument is a double manual by Moxam Kayano and based on an original design.

So my landlady (who lives next door) has decided that I can't make guitars in the apartment anymore. I asked a friend what I should do, and he said "Funk her..." ...or something like that. ;-) Live looped on a Boss RC-20XL, AMT wah, Micro POG, Joyo Vintage Drive, homemade compressor with a guitar I made...and, most importantly, a Kumamon pick.
