How to Fold Up a Pop Up Tent
Pop up tents are very easy to put up but can be much trickier to pack away! Follow Gemma's simple tips for how to put down a pop up tent and get your tent back in its bag in no time. Step 1 Hold the two top poles and fold them into the middle and then take the two (outer) bottom ones and do the same. Leave the door open, in order to let the air out. Step 2 Hold the pop up tent so it’s in a large tortilla shape and put it on its side. Step 3 Grab the top polls and fold in towards your backhand and you should have two circles on the ground. Step 4 Slide the two circles together and pop the tent back into the bag! That's it, that's how to fold up a pop up tent. Down Jackets Guide
When it’s freezing cold outside nothing beats a down jacket for its insulating properties! In this Mountain Warehouse Guide we've done our best to explain what a down jacket is exactly and what makes it so warm. With our help you can discover how to choose a down jacket that’s right for you! So what is a down jacket? A down jacket is a jacket which has been insulated with the soft and warm under feathers from duck or geese. Down is a fantastic insulator as the loft (or fluffiness) of down creates thousands of tiny air pockets which trap warm air and retain heat, thus keeping the wearer very warm. The down fill of a jacket will be either goose down, duck down or a combination of the two.Goose down is often regarded as the warmest and lightest but duck down jackets, or jackets with a combination, are often cheaper. Down Fill Power Down fill power is a measure of the loft or ‘fluffiness’ of the down and its insulating properties. The higher the fill power, the more air pockets in the down and the more insulating the jacket will be for its weight. Fill power is calculated in laboratory conditions and is measured in cubic inches per ounce. To test fill power an ounce of down is compressed by a weight in a glass cylinder. It’s ability to bounce back and ‘loft’ is calculated as the fill power. Fill power is also an indication of the quality of the down used. The better the quality of down the higher the fill power. The down from older birds will generally be higher quality, essentially larger and fluffier, than the down from younger birds. These fluffier features are better insulators than younger down so a jacket that is made using a higher quality down will require less insulation (in terms of weight) to provide the same amount of warmth as a jacket with a lower quality down. As less down is required to provide the same amount of warmth jackets with a higher fill power tend to be lighter and more compressible. Fill power ranges from 400 to 900. For down outerwear (opposed to sleeping bags or duvets) ratings will generally fall between 600 and 800. Fill Power - Quality of Down 400-450 Medium 500-550 Good 550-750 Very Good 750-900 Excellent Watch the video to find out more! How to Fit a Rucksack
Learn how to adjust your rucksack for the most comfortable fit. This can actually help prevent fatigue and injury. In this step by step video we will show you what the different straps on your bag do. 1.Loosen all straps on the rucksack. This will make it easier to tighten to the correct level later. 2. If the rucksack has a moveable ladder back then you will adjust this next. a)To adjust this you will undo the Velcro tab (near the top of the rucksack between the shoulder straps with an arrows pointing up and down on it).In order to know if the back length is correct you will need to fasten the hip fin/strap. These must be in the correct place for the rucksack to fit properly. b)This tab is passed through various loops which secure its position, by taking it out of these loops you can adjust the positioning of the shoulder straps thus altering the length of the rucksack back. c)If you wish to extend the back length then you will move the tab to loops higher up and the reverse to shorten the back length. d)This will be very much trial and error until you get the best fit. 3.In order to know if the back length is correct you will need to fasten the hip fin/strap. These must be in the correct place for the rucksack to fit properly. a)For men the top of the hip fin/strap will sit in line with the top of the hip bone b)For females the middle of the hip fin/strap will sit in line with the top of the hip 4.Once you have got the hip fin/strap in the correct place, tighten the straps to secure the rucksack comfortably. This is a very important part of fitting the rucksack and needs to be correct as your hips will carry the majority of the weight, instead of your shoulders. Make sure not to tighten too much as the strap can dig in and make it uncomfortable. 5.After this you will then need to adjust the shoulder straps by tightening them. The straps should not be loose but not so tight that you move the weight off your hips and back onto your shoulders. 6.You will then move to the side and adjust the top stabilisation straps/load lifters (These are the small straps which connect from the back of the rucksack to the shoulder straps). a)These should be tightened to approximately an angle of 30 degrees. This strap ensures the rucksack does not sit too far back off the wearers back causing them to be unbalanced b)Be careful not to over tighten this strap as doing so can cause a gap behind the shoulder straps which can rub making the pack very uncomfortable very quickly. 7.The sternum (chest) strap is the last item to adjust to fit a rucksack. a)On many rucksacks this is movable to some extent up and down the shoulder straps. b)A guide to its position is that it should be in line with the bottom of the arm pit. c)Once tightened the sternum strap will ensure the shoulder straps do not move about whilst out walking and help to keep the rucksack in place. 8.You don’t want a rucksack to sit too high as it will cause the weight balance to be off as anything you carry above your shoulders will be carried on your shoulders. As a guide your rucksack should never go above eye level. 9.To check once the rucksack is fitted that it has been done so correctly you can try a couple of things. a)Ask someone to tug at the hip fins firmly, if fitted correctly you should move with it and not stay still. b)If a person tries to move the shoulder straps apart they will move but give a bit of resistance. Choosing A Base Layer
Mountain Warehouse offers advice on choosing the best Base Layer! Choosing the right layers when on the slopes or taking part in any outdoor activity is crucial. A good base layer is necessary for maintaining the right body temperature and will wick away moisture (often caused by sweat) from the skin to stop dampness and cold setting in. The term base layer can refer to both tops and bottoms.

How to Reproof a Waterproof Jacket
Waterproof garments can lose their water repellency as dirt and oil break down the water repellent coating. If you notice that the fabric of your jacket is absorbing rather than repelling water, it may be time to reproof it. 1. Always wash your waterproof jacket first before re-proofing. 2. There are two types of clothing proofer to choose from; wash in or spray on. You will first need to decide which is most appropriate for you. Our proofers should not alter the look or handle of the fabric. It is however recommended that the products are tried on a small, inconspicuous test area before spraying on or washing into the garment. 3. If using a wash in proofer, such as our Performance Proofer, first pour the appropriate amount of the proofer into the detergent compartment. For the Performance Proofer this will be two caps full for one jacket and three caps full for two. Allow the washing machine to run through the complete wash and rinse cycle at 30 degrees. Heat helps to activate the product, so if the jacket’s care instructions allow it you can tumble dry the jacket on a low or medium heat. 4. If you’re using a re-proofer spray, such as our Technical Proofer, spray the product evenly on the outside of the jacket from approximately 15-20 cm away. Hanging the jacket on a washing line when spraying with the proofer will help maintain an even coating. Check the jacket carefully to ensure no areas of the fabric have been missed and wipe off any excess with a damp cloth. Allow the jacket to dry naturally. For high abrasion areas such as the elbows and shoulders, it’s recommended that a second coat of proofer is applied. Again, allow to dry naturally. Shop: http://bit.ly/1fMaeAs

Ski Jacket Features Explained by Mountain Warehouse
In this video Eva guides you through the many features of a Mountain Warehouse ski jacket. These include: Snowskirt- A snowskirt prevents snow from entering at the hem of your jacket should you fall by acting as an internal gaiter. A snow skirt can be integrated or detachable. Pockets & Zips- Multiple internal and external pockets give you somewhere to stash your belongings.Jackets can include internal MP3, mobile phone and goggle pockets as well as external pockets for ski maps. Ski pass pockets are useful to store your ski pass and money. Waterproof zips prevent snow and water entering zipped areas. RECCO® Reflectors- The RECCO® system is an advanced rescue technology that helps rescuers search for and pinpoint skiers and snowboarders should they get caught in an avalanche or befall other mountain dangers. These reflectors are added to the inside or outside of jackets. MP3 Pocket and Channel- This internal pocket can store your music device or phone keeping it protected from the wet and cold. While the adjoining MP3 channel lets you feed your headphones through so you can listen to your favourite tunes while on the ski lift and around the resort. Hood- A hood is important to keep out snow and wind chill in bad conditions. All Mountain Warehouse ski jackets have adjustable hoods, some of which are detachable. Fleece Linings- A warm lining is important to insulate against the cold. The microfleece tricot lining used in our ski jackets is extremely warm and soft. Polar fleece is also used to line ski jackets. Cuffs- Elasticated and adjustable cuffs ensure a good fit whilst internal snow cuffs (made of stretch lycra) will keep snow from entering the cuff. Some cuffs may also have thumbholes for additional comfort. Storm Flaps- The material that covers the zips are called storm flaps and can be single (on the outside only) or double (on the inside and outside of the jacket). Ventilation Zips- (or pit zips) are located under the arms and are useful for helping you cool down. Great for those who get warm quickly while skiing or snowboarding. How to Waterproof Boots
Regularly cleaning and reproofing your boots in the right way is essential to prolonging the life span of your footwear. In this video we show you how to waterproof boots and care for Full Grain Leather Boots, Nubuck Leather, Suede and Fabric Boots. Depending on how often you wear your boots, you don't need to reprooof them regularly. Use a leather boot conditioner to keep your boots supple but don't use it too much as this can make the boots too soft and you need them to be supportive. Only use a conditioner when you feel the leather is getting dry and cracked, not every time you wear them Dubbing wax is designed specifically for smooth leather and can ruin the feel of Nubuck and Suede and can also stain. Instead use a specific Nubuck and Suede waterproof spray. You can use a spray on proofer or aerosal to reproof fabric boots. With fabric boots you can reproof them when they're wet although its harder to see where you've sprayed some people believe the proofer sinks in better when damp. Head Torch Buying Guide by Mountain Warehouse
Mountain Warehouse guides you through everything you'll need to know when choosing a head torch! The vast majority of today’s head torches use light-emitting diodes (LED) technology. There are several reasons for this, the main reasons being that they are lightweight, non-breakable and require very little power in comparison to a standard bulb. The brightness of each head torch will be expressed in Lumens and in very broad terms the higher the number of Lumens the greater the light output. In some scenarios a head torch with a lower Lumens output and a more focused beam would be better, for example whilst fishing or map reading. Below we will take you through the different options available: Single Bulb Head Torch To get a sufficient level of light more modern head torches will use a Krypton or halogen bulb. Although these give good light penetration (the distance the light can be useful for) they also produce a lot of heat which means a lot of energy is wasted. A single bulb head torch is also less robust than an LED so carrying spare batteries and a spare bulb are sensible for longer periods of use. Best For: general use around the house, during power outages etc Not suited for: activities that require long periods of use due to short battery life. If you are likely to be in the middle of nowhere for an extended period of time they might not be suitable due to fragility of the bulbs and their associated lifespan. Single LED Head Torch Single LED Head Torch Single LED Head Torch Modern LEDs are very bright and emit a good quality white light, which makes them appear super bright at night time. LEDs come in two variants, high powered and low powered (which is how many multi LED head torches provide different brightness settings). Many single LED head torches have a magnifying lens placed in front of the LED increasing the light output. This means even the smallest head torch can provide hours of good quality light very efficiently. Many of todays best head torches use CREE LEDs as their light source. High powered CREE LEDs are up to six times brighter than traditional LEDs. Many single LED head torches will have an adjustable beam which allows you to tailor its intensity. Cree head torches, with adjustable beams and magnifying lenses are some of the brightest and versatile head torches available and are suited to many different tasks. Best For: pretty much anything! (depending on the style you get). From camping to ultra-marathons there’s a style to suit. You can expect to pay a lot for the very highest spec ones. 10 LED Head Torch 10 LED Head Torch Multi LED Array Head Torches A multi led head torch will come in many different guises, some with different coloured LEDs (usually red and/or green). These can be extremely useful in circumstances where you do not want to lose your night vision or scare away wildlife at night. A multi LED array will provide more light than a single LED head torch but won’t necessarily have a greater beam distance. The quantity of LEDs in use can generally be altered to suit the intensity of the light you need. For example a 10 LED head torch could be used in three, six or 10 LED modes depending on the level of light you need and to save power. Best For: Especially useful for camping, but also when you need a lot of light coverage in an area. Multi-arrays with red or green LEDs are of particular use to military personnel, hunters and scouts. Not suited for: if using a head torch with red LEDs be aware of situational use. Many places, including the Lake District and Peak District, will send out mountain rescue if they detect a red flashing light during night hours, as it is a distress signal! Combined Light Array (Hybrid) Head Torches Combined Light Array (Hybrid) Head Torch Combined Light Array (Hybrid) Head Torches A combined light array head torch will use both a krypton or halogen bulb and a number of LEDs to satisfy different conditions. The standard bulb provides longer distance light and the LEDs give a close light source and conserve power when long distance lighting is not required. These are the ideal head torch for running as they give the best of both worlds- providing good beam distance with good light flooding to illuminate the path ahead. Best For: night runners and mountain bikers, who will favour the longer distance of the light beam, and give good directional light as opposed to the fixed beam on the handlebar lights

How is Waterproofness Tested?
A hydrostatic head test determines the waterproofness of clothes and tents. To be classified as waterproof a material must have a hydrostatic head rating of at least 1,500mm. In a hydrostatic head test a section of the fabric is pulled tight and sealed in a chamber. Water is then added (in mm) and the fabric is observed over a 24 hour period to see how much it withstand before droplets seep through. A jacket with a hydrostatic head rating of 2,000mm, for example, can withstand 2,000mm (32 feet) of rainfall in a single day before water will penetrate through. Watch our video to find out more waterproof testing.
