Love Triangles (Fountains of Wayne vs. Rick Springfield)

03:10
Every time I hear the beginning of "Jessie's Girl", I always think it's going to be "Stacy's Mom". I don't actually like either song that much, but it happened one too many times and so... Perhaps not my best mix, but this "Love Triangle" does bring the 80s hit and the 2000s hit together...which is what the song's about anyway? *smirk* As usual, the quality of the vocals / instrumentals is a problem, since they were just not-so-successfully extracted from the originals. If I can get higher-quality vocals or instrumentals (but not the Glee ones!) then I might redo it someday. Yes, this picture is creepy, but honestly the video for "Stacy's Mom" is creepier, so no video mix on this one. Substrate: Stacy's Mom (Fountains of Wayne) Samples: Jessie's Girl (Rick Springfield) ...with a tiny bit of Just What I Needed (The Cars) Programs used: Audacity: pitch and tempo matching GarageBand: cutting, splicing, fades GIMP: artwork I do not own copyright to any of these songs and encourage you to purchase them from Amazon MP3, iTunes, or elsewhere.

The Reception (Taeyang, Jay Sean, et al)

05:28
My first mashup of this scale, and one of the biggest things I did this summer. Based around Taeyang's "Wedding Dress" and Jay Sean's "Lights Off", this is the story of several unlucky men and women in various stages of grief over their ended relationships. They meet...at The Reception. If you prefer to be surprised at the songs that appear, don't keep reading. By far the hardest part about this mashup, or at least the video, was the fact that "Lights Off" doesn't *have* a video. The Jay Sean seen here is from the music video for "Stay"; the credit for this goes to YouTube user johnsingh07. The Zelda secret noise is a new tag, for all mashups I upload from now on. There are two conceits of mine in the video. The first is the intro music, another reasonably well-known song which, besides having personal significance, also matches the chord progression for "Wedding Dress". Unfortunately, the original doesn't fit so well with the other songs here. The second is the English lyrics I've shown for the first chorus of "Wedding Dress", which are my own interpretation of a few literal translations I found a while back. The original idea came when I first heard "Lights Off" (after hearing "Wedding Dress"). But the aural soul of the mashup, and what finally got me to do it, is the transition from "One Shot" to "Lights Off" at 3:57. I really regret that there's not a better video clip for that, because it's my favorite part of the whole song. Cast (in order of appearance): Wedding Dress (Taeyang) Lights Off (Jay Sean) Insomnia (Craig David) So Sick (Ne-Yo) Wedding Dress (English Remix) (Tommy Chen & J. Reyez) God is a Girl (Groove Coverage) Paparazzi (Lady Gaga) One Shot (JLS) Crew: Audacity — vocal isolation, vocal removal, tempo change, pitch matching GarageBand — cutting, splicing, pitchbending, intro music, fades Motion — video editing GIMP — opening artwork Given how wide some of the pitch changes are, this may have been better served as two mashups. But I like it better this way. I do not have copyright for any of these songs and encourage you to go buy them from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or elsewhere.

Careless Fiction (Big Bang, Beast, et al)

04:03
Regret. Breaking up may or may not have been the right thing to do, but something could have gone differently...but only in fiction. Cast (in order of appearance): Right Now (Akon) Careless Whisper (George Michael) Haru Haru (BIGBANG) Stay Together (2NE1) Fiction - English Cover (StezenM & SNDM) Fiction (Beast) Crew: Audacity — tempo change, pitch matching, vocal isolation GarageBand — cutting, splicing, fades GIMP — album art iMovie — putting the album art with the track Although "Fiction" forms the substrate for this mix, what drew these songs together was their similar instrumentals...all of which seemed to trace their origins back to a game from my childhood. (Or to "Careless Whisper", which predates the game.) Apart from this, props to StezenM and SNDM for a great English cover for "Fiction". Their channel is sm2beatz; check it out! The Best I'd Rather Be (Clean Bandit vs. Anna Kendrick vs…Pokémon?)

02:49
A one-day mashup based on a seed of an idea that made me smile. Substrate: Pokémon Johto Samples: Rather Be - Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne Cups (When I'm Gone) - Anna Kendrick I started this one thinking it would just be fun, with the songs obviously having nothing to do with each other. But as I was making the video it started to feel like there /was/ a story, with the main character of Rather Be going through her normal life as a chef, but secretly envisioning all these creatures and adventures that eventually become the world of Pokémon. (Never mind that the real creator of Pokémon is a man.) And then Anna Kendrick is there too. Um. I think she's commenting on the /chef's/ life, that she doesn't realize she needs to get away. Or maybe I just couldn't resist putting in another song. Tools: Audacity — tempo change, pitch matching GarageBand — cutting, splicing Final Cut Pro X — video editing The vocal tracks for "Rather Be" and "Cups" came from ACAPELLAS4U. As usual, I do not have copyright for any of these songs and encourage you to go buy them from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or elsewhere.

Guile's Theme meets SHINee's Magic Dance

03:34
Some of you may have heard of Guile's Theme, a song from Street Fighter that goes with anything. (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/guiles-theme-goes-with-everything) Some of you may have heard of SHINee's Magic Dance, the choreography for their song "Replay" (among others) that goes with anything. A song that goes with anything and a dance that goes with anything. But do they go with...EACH OTHER‽ Turns out they do. Rather well, actually. This is me not bothering to line things up at all, though I stuck the slow version of Guile's Theme on the end instead of repeating the fast one again. If you were hoping for a real mashup from me, there should be one coming in late December / early January.

Out of My Misery (Taylor Swift, Paramore, et al)

03:37
Unlike "Careless Fiction", breaking up was probably the right thing to do here. But it still hurts. Cast (in order of appearance): Misery Business (Paramore) We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor Swift) I Knew You Were Trouble (Taylor Swift) Wrecking Ball (Miley Cyrus) Just a Dream (Nelly) Crew: Audacity — tempo change, pitch matching, vocal extraction GarageBand — cutting, splicing, fades and pans Final Cut Pro Trial — video editing This mashup sat unfinished on my hard drive for a long time. Putting "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" over "Misery Business" had been in my head for a long time before that, but even after adding "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "Just a Dream" the mashup felt unfinished. I tried a few different songs to fill in the gap, but couldn't think of anything until I found myself singing "Wrecking Ball" into "I Knew You Were Trouble". I'm glad I managed to use "Wrecking Ball" without any of the more gratuitous scenes in its video. I do not have copyright for any of these songs and encourage you to go buy them from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or elsewhere.

In the Creases (MV)

05:02
"In the Creases" ambeR Rubarth New Green Lines Starring: Christine Liao This was nearly a year-long project for me, in bits and pieces. The first idea came during an airplane ride last summer, where I began storyboarding using a Vienna Teng / Alex Wong cover of the song. I soon bought Amber's album and switched to her version (also with Alex singing background). Nothing was actually filmed until the end of January this year, when I was finally able to find the actor, the apartment, and the time I needed. I've been editing on and off since, and finally wrapped it up. I hope I've done the song justice with this video. Thanks to ambeR for creating it in the first place. Filmed with two different cameras and edited using Final Cut Pro and Motion.

Let Go (cover)

05:39
"Let Go" Deidre Quan and Jordy Rose Originally by m-flo loves YOSHIKA a.k.a. Secret Surprise Finals Week Music Project no jutsu. Directed by Jordy Rose Cinematography by Anne Chen Download the song here: http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/10/28/326783/Let%20Go.m4a Sound editing done in Soundtrack Pro. Video in Final Cut Pro. --- The translation (captioning) was done after the fact...think of it as "what we would sing if we were to sing it in English". It works with the existing melody and rhythm. (Consequently, it is not a direct translation...there are some parts moved around and other parts where lyrics have been invented or dropped. So if you hear "isshundemo" and see "but time moves on"...yeah. But the core idea should still be there.) You never thought that things would turn out like this, now did you? That's when you know time is set for a change... * Let go (let go) let go (let go) let go... I know I gotta let go Let go (let go) let go (let go) let go... I know I gotta leave my past behind and let go Let go (let go) let go (let go)... I know I gotta be strong You better know where you're going and know where you're from Better believe it baby, let's go... I can't forget with everything we left this way I try, but I can't seem to shut it all away. Rushing in just leads to sadness, we knew we had to go But no matter what these feelings are, gotta let you know. In passionate time, this endless heat, if it could stop for just one moment now, For you and me. I want your heart, boy...but time moves on. Though I'm drowning in this unfulfilled young dream of love I know that I don't want to wake from this dream I'm in -- can't let go I know it's selfish; I don't care. I want you back; I want you here. Your love that never wavers. (yeah yeah yeah) Everything, it all starts out with "hey, how ya doin?" (yeah yeah yeah) Two eyes meet, and it starts the tale, a brand new world and storyline. (yeah yeah yeah) Now it seems the goodbyes come as a set with every meeting. (yeah yeah yeah) And our time's at an end, now I'm gone but even so I'm all right, at least pretend to be But my heart hurts when you're around cause you're not next to me. Just wondering if you feel the same -- onaji Because I want to know if feelings are reality. Cause wasting time ain't gonna end up as nobody then, though. Can't be afraid, gotta loosen up, go back, say hello If you want to be free, gotta let go -- I'm telling you Your ego is what stops you so -- just listen. As time flows by, so sweet and quiet, everything goes on but I am left here My body now -- it's breaking apart boy. I don't know why... Cause I fall apart, and I can't breathe, this dark cloud of anxiety. Oh, why do I try to take it all to call my own. You don't have to say a thing. Your love is all you need to bring. I want you here with me. Love train -- I jump on as it's leaving but it's speeding Won't wait -- it's not my kind of life; I end up straight no chase More speed to get to reality, run, run, run As I look down my watch's hands don't stop A one-time only now-I've-lost-it magic, it's fate, the key to Love which turns the tables, makes a fool of logic. If I don't hurry Mr. Heartbreak might stay. But I rewind so once more faded memories might play. Tell me how to be free Oh baby, oh baby Will my heart be free So tell me, a moment now Though I'm drowning in this unfulfilled young dream of love I know that I don't want to wake from this dream I'm in -- can't let go I know it's selfish; I don't care. I want you back; I want you here. Your love that never wavers. Cause I fall apart, and I can't breathe, this dark cloud of anxiety. Oh, why do I try to take it all to call my own. Teenage Angst (Lady Gaga, Charice, et al)

03:44
...a.k.a "The Rachel Berry Theme Song". Five young women break up with their partners because they're being held back from their dreams. Two are happy about it, thinking about their freedom. Two are sad, trying to let their Others down gently. And one is just...well, does Lady Gaga ever make sense? Substrates: Don't Cry (Park Bom) Firework (Katy Perry) The Edge of Glory (Lady Gaga) Samples: Louder (Charice) Hair (Lady Gaga) My Moment (Rebecca Black) Tools: Audacity — vocal isolation, vocal removal, tempo change, pitch matching Soundtrack Pro — cutting, splicing, fades Final Cut Pro — video editing Charice is one of my few celebrity crushes, because of how much she looks like she enjoys her music, but "Louder" is a confusing mix of imagery that combines endings and beginnings. But it's catchy for sure. Originally this was going to be a usual mix for me, like "The Reception" -- a series of half-verses linked by common instrumentals. The seed for this mix was actually the repeated "head, head, head" in "Louder", which I matched up mentally with the "hair, hair, ha-a-a-air" in Lady Gaga's "Hair". But the allure of "This is my moment, baby, please don't cry" was too much for me to resist...even my small lyric manipulations in "One Night Stand" gave me a rush of feeling that "regular" mashups didn't have, "My Moment" is basically Rebecca Black saying "F*** you, internet" (which I respect even if I thought "Friday" was horrible), and all the great mashup artists (DJ Earworm, Norwegian Recycling, etc) have managed to create /new/ songs out of old ones. I could at least give it a try. The nail in the coffin was that the only "Hair" a cappella I could find was a live performance, which didn't have the characteristic line to match "Louder". So it was set...for the first time, I would take existing lyrics, and put them together to make a new song. (With the now-familiar challenge of "Hair" not actually having a music video.) I think even with the drastic pitch bends it was a success. A number of vocal tracks in this mashup came from ACAPELLAS4U. As usual, I do not have copyright for any of these songs and encourage you to go buy them from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or elsewhere.

Disconnected (Gotye, SNSD, et al)

04:01
If there's a story here, it's that disconnection has as much to do with breakups as it does with telephones. The men are feeling bereft now that their relationships have ended, but the women have definitely moved on. (And specifically, SNSD and Brown Eyed Girls seem to be taunting the poor boys...) Substrate: Telephone (Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce) Samples: Somebody That I Used To Know (Gotye ft. Kimbra) Lucifer (SHINee) The Boys (Girls' Generation) Hung Up (Madonna) Abracadabra (Brown Eyed Girls) ...and a couple sound effects from morgantj on Freesound.org. Tools: Audacity — tempo change, pitch matching Soundtrack Pro — cutting, splicing, fades Final Cut Pro — video editing I strongly disliked "The Boys" when it first came out. The parts sung and rapped all together have very little musical value, the dance is hardly dancing, and even the verses are over-autotuned. And the background music provides no support; I'd even say it's annoying. It wasn't just me either; several of my friends shared this opinion. We all agreed that it was pretty clear the message was "we're just going to act sexy rather than make a real song /or/ dance", or in other words, "we're sexy and we know it". Then I saw a mashup with Big Bang's "Cafe" (by PuNk3Ly), and Luminaire's sort of "candlelight" cover (a friend of mine IRL, actually), and that saved the song for me. It wasn't like it was /that/ different from "Lucifer", which I was already familiar with. And if I thought /this/ video was just them just trying to look sexy, "Abracadabra" goes /much/ further (as evidenced by the part that appears here). WTH, Brown Eyed Girls? The common theme of this mashup is telephones, of course; every song I used except "Lucifer" has /something/ about phone calls or numbers. (Okay, that's a lie. The Brown Eyed Girls are actually saying "bring, bring", not "ring ring". And unfortunately I couldn't work in SHINee's /other/ well-known single, the ridiculous "Ring Ding Dong".) "Telephone" itself has a fairly standard chord progression that makes it quite suitable for mashups—the first "Telephone" mashup I heard was DJ Masa's "Lolliphone 2" (using Big Bang's "Lollipop Part 2"). (Lady Gaga keeps ending up in my mashups somehow.) But "Somebody That I Used To Know" was a surprise for me, both in that such an unprocessed song became such a hit and that it could provide the foundation for this mashup. Gotye and Kimbra are the only man and woman singing together here. This song is exactly 4 minutes long. There is no reason for this, other than I thought it was cool. A number of vocal tracks in this mashup came from ACAPELLAS4U. As usual, I do not have copyright for any of these songs and encourage you to go buy them from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or elsewhere.

Time (MV)

04:41
This is part of what it feels like to leave UC Berkeley. Music: Time Hans Zimmer Inception Recorded after I graduated, after many of my friends had moved out, as everything comes to an end. I always said that it wouldn't be the place that I missed as much as the people, and that's still true. But I found that I am going to miss the campus...four years of life here is a long time. Some of this is fairly universal; some of this is very specific to me (especially the item parade at the end). And there's plenty omitted; the surrounding Berkeley area is almost entirely missing, and there are a few places there that have similar strength in memory. But everything in here has been part of my undergraduate life at some point, in some way. Even the music. Filmed on an old Canon ZR40 (DV tape era). Very "home video" cause I wasn't so careful with the tripod. Edited using Final Cut Pro (and Motion a tiny bit). I encourage you to buy the Inception soundtrack, or at least this track. Hans Zimmer's work is legendary.

One Night Stand (Beast, Britney Spears, et al)

04:57
Just as Taeyang went from "Wedding Dress" to "I Need a Girl", I go from "The Reception" to "One Night Stand". This was another large project, bringing together eight more pop/dance songs in one...demonstrating that you can create something new and worth through combination and composition, and that pop songs all sound the same. The connections are looser this time; if you want to put a story on this, it's exploring the emotions that are part of a One Night Stand: anticipation, excitement, desire, awe...and regret, longing, and shame. Cast (in order of appearance): One (Epik High) Come Back, You Bad Person (Kahi) Shock (Beast) Hold It Against Me (Britney Spears) Beautiful (Akon) Million Tears (Groove Coverage)* Only Girl (Rihanna) Tonight (BIGBANG) * "Million Tears" doesn't actually have an MV; the video shown is from "Because I Love You". Crew: Audacity — vocal isolation, vocal removal, tempo change, pitch matching Soundtrack Pro — cutting, splicing, pitchbending, fades Final Cut Pro — video editing The inspiration for this one came from "Shock", which I discovered a while back as part of DJ Masa's "HOT K-POP 2010 pt. 1" mashup (http://youtu.be/nQ5ZW0gYL7M). When I later heard Epik High's "One", the two were far too similar to let this opportunity pass (sadly, I think whoever wrote "Shock" was probably more than influenced by "One")...and the rest is history. Also, the music video for "One" is a lot darker than my impression of the song. I tried to reduce that somewhat, but it's certainly still a more serious side of a One Night Stand. A number of vocal tracks in this mashup came from ACAPELLAS4U. I do not have copyright for any of these songs and encourage you to go buy them from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or elsewhere. Alive Tonight (Flo Rida vs. Pitbull vs. Kenneth Ronquillo)

03:50
No story on this one, just a fun combination of dance-pop. Kenneth Ronquillo is a fellow Cal alum, and when I heard "Back to Life" I immediately thought of "Give Me Everything". "Club Can't Handle Me" ties it all together. Substrate: Club Can't Handle Me (Flo Rida ft. David Guetta) Samples: Give Me Everything (Pitbull ft. Ne-yo, Nayer, Afrojack) Back to Life (Kenneth Ronquillo) Tools: Audacity — tempo change, pitch matching Soundtrack Pro — cutting, splicing, fades Final Cut Pro — video editing I had to resist the urge to use "Club Can't Handle Me"'s best-known one-liner. You know, "Bring your body here, let me switch up your atmosphere." Here is a mashup without it! The vocal tracks in this mashup came from ACAPELLAS4U, except for "Back to Life", which came straight from the artist. Thanks, Kenneth! Fushigirls (Wonder Girls vs...My Neighbor Totoro?)

02:43
Another weird one! I made this in under 24 hours...think of it as a slightly more grown up Totoro? Also, this is my first mashup in which there is no English, only Japanese and Korean—oh, wait, "Nobody" has some English in it. Never mind. Substrate: Nobody (Wonder Girls) Samples: Tonari no Totoro (closing song) The title, "fushigirls" is based on the Japanese word "fushigi" ("mystery"), which shows up in the lyrics of Tonari no Totoro, and "girls" from "Wonder Girls". Vocal isolation and tempo matching using Audacity. Pitch matching and editing using Soundtrack Pro. Album art made in an old version of Acorn. Let Me Spell It Out For You (2NE1, After School, et al)

01:03
Another novelty mix! It seems like a lot of K-pop songs tend to like spelling things out. I was a bit surprised when I realized "Keep Your Head Down" and "Let's Do It" actually worked well together. There wasn't an obvious way to combine them, though, and so I left the pair alone for quite a while. It wasn't until I was looking for a backtrack for the "alphabet song" that I realized I already had a perfect fit. That idea came from discovering Hyuna's "Just Follow", but combining "Keep Your Head Down" and "Let's Do It" is the hidden musical gem in this mix. I was sorry not to be able to use SNSD's "Gee" here, particularly because G-Dragon owns it so well in "The Leaders". But it didn't provide any /other/ letters...ah, well. Samples: A: 100% (MBLAQ) B: Lollipop 2 (Big Bang) C: The Leaders (G-Dragon feat. Teddy and CL) D: The Leaders E: Lollipop (Big Bang and 2NE1) F: Lollipop G: The Leaders H: Just Follow (HyunA feat. Substrate: All the Right Moves (Waking Up) Samples: I'm on a Boat (Incredibad) Programs Used: Audacity — vocal isolation, vocal removal, tempo change GarageBand — cutting, splicing, echo effect Motion — video editing No pitch changes were necessary to make this mashup...that's just getting lucky! Rocketeer of Time (Far East Movement vs...Nintendo?)

Not /quite/ a mashup, but fun anyway! I certainly had fun making this. So far listeners' opinions are divided, though...there are some parts where I didn't match the rhythms perfectly, and others where the music's just discordant. But the core idea with the OoT opening theme has been bouncing around my head for a while. Substrate: Rocketeer (Far East Movement ft. Ryan Tedder) (using DJ Smoke's very good a cappella and AznCircusStudios' instrumental, though they're together a lot of the time anyway) Samples: (all composed by Koji Kondo) Opening Theme Kakariko Village Ocarina: "Epona's Song", "Sun Song", "Zelda's Lullaby" (plus sound effects) This time around I used Audacity for ALL the audio editing. The good thing about Audacity is it lets you edit the tempo and pitch of a clip independently and almost interactively (it's not live changes but it's easy to undo). The bad thing is that all edits are destructive, and undo isn't always good enough when you decide you need that bit of backtrack after all. For the album art I used an old version of Acorn, a Mac OS X native image editor. I do not own copyright to any of these songs and encourage you to purchase them from Amazon MP3, iTunes, or elsewhere...though the Zelda music is hard to find these days.
