Troy The legend of the Trojan War is One of the most powerful stories from ancient Greek literature and forms the basis of Homer’s The Iliad. Most of us have also probably seen the movie. Ancient troy commanded a strategic point at the southern entrance to the Dardanelles, a narrow strait linking the Black Sea with the Aegean Sea. The approximate Location of Troy was mentioned in several works by ancient Greek and Latin authors but was lost for hundreds of years until in the 1800's when scholars Charles Maclaren and Frank Calvert were able to persuade German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann to Excavate a mysterious mound know as Hisarlik. Everyone else had ignored Maclaren and Calvert claiming that the legend of Troy was just a story based on myth, not history. Of course, Schliemann took full credit for the discovery once he began uncovering the ancient city. Life lessons guys, always trust your instinct and don't let other people take credit for your hard work. The actual site where the city of Troy was located has About 9 different layers of settlements, towns and cities that could have been the Troy led by King Priam whose son Paris, ran away with Helen, wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta. The first and oldest layer dates back to the Early Bronze Age (around 2000 BCE). Later versions of Troy were destroyed by fire, and others by earthquake and war. Then, it was abandoned and forgotten, until the legend became truth. 5. Pompeii When Pompeii was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, the City was buried under layers of volcanic rock and ash—frozen in time—until its rediscovery and exploration in the 18th century. Pompeii had a population of between 10,000 to 20,000 people and was famous for its excellent farmland. One of the ironies of volcanoes is that They tend to lure people in because they produce very fertile soil. In the towns below it, most people would not have known that Vesuvius was a volcano or that a Bronze Age settlement in the area had already been annihilated almost 2,000 years before. Vesuvius is actually Inside the exploded skeleton of an older volcano. If you look at an aerial photograph, you can see the remaining ridge of a much larger volcano on the north side. Around 2,000 people were killed in Pompeii from a cloud of scorching gases and thousands of tons of rock and ash that rained down over the city. The powdery ash that buried everyone was so fine that You can even see people's eyelids preserved like a plaster cast. The Emperor Titus declared Pompeii an emergency zone and offered financial assistance for cleanup and recovery. But the buried towns were beyond salvaging. Eventually, Pompeii and Herculaneum were Taken off local maps and forgotten for hundreds of years. Within a few centuries, settlers had repopulated the empty terrain, unconcerned with what lay below. The African plate, on which most of the Mediterranean Sea rests, is actually diving beneath the European plate. Under pressure underground the gases stay dissolved. When the magma rises to the surface it compresses, causing volcanoes to explode. To this day, Vesuvius Remains one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes; some 3.5 million Italians live in its shadow, and about 2 million tourists visit the ruins each year. Although monitoring devices are in place if there is a major eruption with little warning and the winds are blowing toward Naples there could be another major disaster. 4. Harappa and Mohenjo Daro The discovery of the Indus Valley civilization (aka the Harappan Civilization) in what is now Pakistan was first recorded in the 1800's by the British. The locals also knew about it before then but there was no widespread archaeological excavation until the 1920s. This mysterious culture emerged nearly 4,500 years ago and thrived for a thousand years, profiting from the highly fertile lands of the Indus River floodplain and trade with the civilizations of nearby Mesopotamia. It remains mysterious because Scholars have still not been able to decipher the language, and instead have to guess at their daily life based on the objects that have been found. Mohenjo-daro and Harappa were highly advanced cities of their time, with Remarkably sophisticated civil engineering and urban planning reaching their golden age between 2,600 to 1900 BCE. Harappa had a level of Architectural planning that was unparalleled in the ancient world.

The Callao Man After spending 4 years exploring a network of caves in the Philippines, archaeologists found a human foot ! While this might not sound all that exciting, it turns out the dates back 67,000 years! 9. Purple You know that everytime a new creature gets discovered around here, we all get excited!! In 2012 five new species of purple crab were discovered, where else? In the Philippines!! The Philippines is extremely biologically diverse but many species that we haven’t even heard about before are already being threatened. Fun fact: Conservation International lists the Philippines as one of 17 countries that holds most of the Earth’s plant and animal life. 8. The Laguna Copperplate Inscription The Laguna Copper Plate Inscription is another important discovery that helps us better understand the history of the Philippines. It’s a legal document that dates back all the way to 900 AD and is the earliest known written document in the Philippines. During the 10th century, scholars generally believed the Philippines were isolated from most of Southeast Asia. 7. 700,000-Year-Old Tools It’s pretty incredible to think that no matter how far we come in the fields of science and technology the world is still full of secrets. It turns out, the Philippines has many. Recently, some stone tools were found that predate the arrival of modern humans to the islands by around 600,000 years. 6. Rat-Eating Pitcher Plant What could be cooler than a carnivorous jungle plant? Well, not a whole lot and take into account the fact this innocent plant actually is big bowl of and you really have a winner on your hands! 5. The Blanket of Banton It’s strange to think that the folk-style blankets we see adorning living rooms all across the country actually came from a much more ritualistic tradition. The essential elements of the blankets stem from the idea of the “blanket”. So the next time you see an ethnic blanket at that cool girl’s apartment try not to ruin it for her if she doesn’t know the story. 4. Adidas One of the strangest things about the Philippines may be the street food, so if you can stomach the idea of bizarre delicacies, this might be right up your alley. The first time I heard “Adidas” I thought it was referring to the sports shoe company, you know...but it turns out it’s something totally different. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard that if you ask for adidas, you are going to get some nice, grilled chicken feet! 3. Stripe-Faced Flying Fox While the name might be deceiving, it’s actually a bat, not a fox. This unusual species of bat was discovered not long after scientists deemed it to no longer exist. The stripe-faced flying fox looks like a cute character out of a cartoon and I’m sure the researchers were happy in this case to be proven wrong and discover the species was still around. 2. Balut Here’s another street food item that might shock you! Chicken on a stick is one thing, but Balut is quite another. So what is Balut? For starters it’s a duck egg. Which doesn’t sound so bad, but add the fact that the egg is fertilized and allowed to develop from 16 to 20 days before it’s cooked and things get...interesting. 1. Oton Mask Don’t be fooled by appearances. While this may look like some kind of torture device, or a golden insect of some sort (depending on how you look at it). It was actually used for something completely different. Early people used to use gold ornaments to cover the face of the deceased. Huginn and Muninn In Norse myth, Huginn and Muninn are the two raven of the chief god Odin. “Huginn” means “thought” and “Muninn” means “memory”. Each morning Odin sends forth these raven and they fly over the earth. At night, they return and sit on his shoulders to tell him what they heard and saw. The connection between Odin and ravens is very old and deep. Already in the sixth and seventh centuries AD – well before the beginning of the Viking Age in the late eighth century – visual depictions of Odin on helmets and jewelry frequently picture him accompanied by one or more ravens. In the poetry of the Viking Age, Odin was referred to with kennings, and vice versa. A kenning is a common Old Norse literary device that uses images from a body of traditional lore to refer to something, rather than calling it by its everyday name. Odin is called the “raven-god”, the “raven-tempter”, or “the priest of the raven sacrifice”. In the same way, ravens are called “the greedy hawks of Odin”. Also, the sight of ravens immediately following a sacrifice to Odin was taken as a sign that the god had accepted the offering. The ravens are an extension of Odin himself. In fact, he fears they won’t return one day, leading to him losing some of knowledge and power. 8. Ratatotskr Scurrying up and down the Norse tree of life is Ratatoskr, a mischievous squirrel who is also a messenger for the gods. In the tales, he often puts his own spin on the stories he carries up and down the tree. His most regular clients are the wise eagle who sits at the top of Yggdrasil, and the hungry serpent, Nidhoggr, who lies coiled among the tree’s roots. Ratatoskr relishes the chance to carry an insult between these two mighty beasts, and by doing so, he is continually stirring the animosity between them. Tales describe Ratatoskr as a red squirrel. Ancient artists depicted him with extremely long ears, but this could be an artifact of the art style of the time, rather than a meaningful statement about Ratotskr’s physique. In some stories, he wants to destroy the tree of life, so he antagonizes the eagle and the dragon against each other. Because the tree is all that stands between the two foes, they attack the tree to get at each other. Some scholars believe that Ratatoskr may symbolize Rati, a magical drill that the god Odin used on a quest to obtain magical mead, made from the blood of the wisest man who ever lived, out of a fortress inside a mountain. 7. Garm The monstrous hound Garm guards the entrance to Helheim, the Norse realm of the, much like Cerberus in Greek mythology. It has four eyes and a chest drenched with blood, and lives in Gnipa-cave. Anyone who had given bread to the poor could appease him with Hel cake. On the day of Ragnarok, Garm will join the giants in their fight against the gods. The god of war Tyr will it in this cataclysmic battle but will from the wounds inflicted by the hound. Garm is often equated with the wolf Fenrir. 6. Fafnir According to the legends, a dwarf named Fafnir slew his father, Hreithmar, to obtain a vast amount of gold. The gold had been a gift from Odin, who put a curse on it. Full of greed, Fafnir changed into a dragon to guard his treasure and was later slain by the young hero Sigurd. Sigurd was spurred on by another brother of Fafnir, the blacksmith Regin. Once Sigurd, under the advice of Odin, had Fafnir, Regin asked him to cook the dragon’s heart for him. Sigurd touched the heart as it was cooking to test if it was done and burned his thumb. He put his thumb into his mouth and was then able to understand the language of birds. In this tale, knowledge is given to one who eats the heart of a dragon. The birds told Sigurd that it was Regin’s intention to him, so instead Sigurd Regin and left with Fafnir’s treasure. The oxygen levels are nearly negligent, but due to chemosynthesis, At least forty-eight species of wildlife has been stored away for possible millions of years. Many of these animals are unique to this specific cave. The cave is unsafe for humans and most animals. It is completely Void of light and contains toxic gasses that the specialized animals within the cave require to live. Less than 100 people have been allowed in the cave, and to get to the entrance you have to be Lowered 65ft into the ground through a narrow passage. Microbiologist, Rich Boden was one of the first to enter the cave and one of the few to see the lake below, “The pool of warm, sulphidic water stinks of rotting eggs or burnt rubber when you disturb it as hydrogen sulphide is given off.” The animals that live in Movile Cave are Generally born without eyes or skin pigment, due to the fact that they live in the darkness and don’t need sight or camouflage. As for humans, if you go in without a special mask it wouldn’t be long before the lack of oxygen and toxic gasses took their toll. It would Begin with labored breathing and a headache, followed by kidney damage…and the rest, well; no one has ever gotten that far. #9 Lake Vostok Out of over 400 lakes in Antarctica only one can be the largest, and the title goes to Lake Vostok. The lake is at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia's Vostok Station. It resides Far beneath the surface of the central East Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is 11,000ft above sea level. This freshwater lake’s surface is about 13,000ft under the surface of the ice, meaning it would be less than 2000ft below sea level. The lake has Supposedly been untouched for at least 400,000 years, and it wasn’t until 2012 that scientists completed the longest ever ice core that reached 12,400ft and finally pierced through to the surface of the lake. However, as soon as this happened, Water from the lake gushed up the borehole used to extract the water, and mixed with Freon and kerosene that was used to keep the hole from freezing. In 2015, teams tried again and were successful in retrieving a pure sample. Still, Humans have only touched the surface of this lost world and it is believed that new, unseen creatures could dwell in Lake Vostok. The question is…will humans ever reach them? #8 Son Doong Cave Son Doong Cave, or known in Vietnam as Hang Sơn Đoòng is a Solutional cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam. Son Doong Cave is often called the largest cave in the world. It was discovered by a local man named Hồ Khanh in 1991. People from the area knew about the cave, but the steep descent at the entrance as well as the loud sound of the wind and water rushing through the cave, prevented locals from entering. Of course, everyone thought it was spooky! It wasn’t until 2009 that the cave was shared with the world when British Cave Research Association conducted a survey nearby. Unfortunately, their progress was stopped when they ran into a 200 ft calcite wall known as the Great Wall of Vietnam. In 2013, Some of the largest cave pearls known to man were discovered, some reaching the size of a baseball! Later on, in 2013, the first tourist group explored the cave. The tickets to join this exploration cost a whopping $3,000. Permits are required to access the cave and are given out on a limited basis. Only about 800 are available in 2017 and only through August. During the Fall and Winter months, the water levels are so high that the cave is inaccessible. #7 Sima Humboldt & Sima Martel Cerro Sarisariñama is a Tepui or flattop mountain range in Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park. Located in Venezuela. The name of the mountain is derived from the tale of Ye'kuana Indians who live near the mountain. They tell a Tale about an evil spirit living in caves up in the mountain and devouring human flesh with a sound "Sari... sari...” (Some sort of windy sound effect?) On this mountain there are two mysterious sinkholes known as Sima Humboldt & Sima Martel. The larger of the two is Sima Humboldt is over 1000ft deep and over 1000ft wide. The bottom of each hole has its very own individual ecosystem. It was first descended in 1974 and as of today, is exclusive for scientific researchers.

Gorilla and Kittens You might be familiar with Koko the Gorilla because of her famous friendship with actor and comedian Robin Williams. She’s well known for her role in language research and is the subject of many children’s books. Koko is able to communicate through sign language using over 1,000 words and can understand around 2,000 spoken words. She was born in 1971 and has been working with animal psychologist Penny Patterson since she was very young. She surprised everyone when she used her language skills to ask for something surprising: a kitten! Her caretakers, thinking she wouldn’t know the difference, gave her a stuffed kitten. Gorillas are incredibly strong animals and they were worried that Koko would hurt a kitten by accident. However, she did know the difference and signed the word “sad” when they tried to give her the stuffed animal. Like, you know what I’m saying but you are ignoring me! They decided to give it a try and Patterson brought her to a kitten and carefully supervised the interactions. Koko named the kitty “All Ball”. To everyone’s surprise, she showed extreme care when playing with All Ball. She was gentle, loving, and patient. She also tried to use All Ball as a convenient scapegoat. When Koko ripped a sink from the wall, she tried to blame it on the cat! The story about a gorilla asking for a pet kitten broke the news all over the world. One day, though, All Ball escaped Koko’s enclosure and was hit by a car. Her caretakers were forced to break the news and Koko signed “bad”, “cry”, “sad”, and “frown” over and over. Gorillas can’t cry like humans and this was the only way she could express her grief. Over the years, Koko has had several pet cats and continues to raise awareness to save gorillas. 10. Cat and a Squirrel Cats who have recently given birth are known for their strong mothering instinct. That can turn even the most fearsome hunter into a loving parent. Shortly after giving birth to a litter, Emmy the cat found a baby squirrel in her owner’s yard, or her yard, depending on how you want to look at it. Squirrels are usually prey to cats and don’t stand much of a chance. However, perhaps due to a mix of hormones and the baby squirrel’s noises of distress, Emmy decided to adopt the squirrel rather than eat it. Maybe she was just a very nice cat! Emmy’s owner could no longer take care of her and her children. They were passed on to new owners and the strange addition was named “Rocky”. Rocky became so integrated into his new family that he even learned how to purr just like a cat. 9. The Fox and the Hound The Disney version of The Fox and the Hound is one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen, I couldn’t even watch it as a kid because just thinking about it made me start crying. The good news is that there is a real life version of this story that has a much better ending! A Norwegian photographer named Torgeir Berge owns a German Shepherd named Tinni. One day, the pair were walking through the woods near Berge’s home when they found an orphaned baby fox. Berge allowed Tinny to play with the fox, who Berge named Sniffer. The pair spent the entire day together. When it came time to go, Berge didn’t try to take the fox with him but left him to fend for itself. The fox was old enough to survive on its own and Berge didn’t know hot to take care of a wild fox. Which just as a side not, you shouldn’t take wild animals home with you either... The friendship born on that day remained and when Berge would take Tinni out for walks, Sniffer the fox would come and they would spend hours playing together. Berge took beautiful photos of the friendship in order to raise awareness and denounce the killing of foxes for their fur. 8. Pig and a Lamb Rescued from a factory farm, Edgar Allen Pig lived on a farm sanctuary in Australia. In fact, he’s the namesake of the sanctuary, which is called Edgar’s Mission. The owner of Edgar’s Mission taught Edgar how to walk on a leash so that he could better serve as an ambassador and draw attention to the inhumane treatment of farm animals. Not many people had seen a pig walking on a leash in Australia! It wasn’t long after his arrival that Edgar showed a talent one wouldn’t assign to a pig: he made an excellent foster father. Rottweiler With Vitiligo Usually if you see a rottweiler you’re worried it’s going to bite your head off. Unless you are familiar with them or see these markings. Here’s something you don’t see everyday… a rottweiler that makes you go “awww”! If you’ve never seen a dog with vitiligo before that’s not surprising. The condition only affects 1 out of a hundred puppies. Vitiligo means there’s a lack of pigment being produced in the animal’s skin. The weird thing is we don’t really know why it happens and can only make an educated guess. Scientists believe the root of the problem lies in the immune system. It can caused by a viral infection or an autoimmune disorders. In dogs vitiligo can be found on Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dachshunds and Old English Sheepdogs. There’s no treatment but don’t worry about this little fella, or should we say big fella! He doesn’t suffer any pain from vitiligo but he can get itchy from it. If you think that sounds uncomfortable than be aware that the condition affects humans too! 9. Venus the Cat Check out Venus. A lot of cats have a major social media presence but this one has a bigger profile than most. She has 1.4 million followers!! And for good reason, she’s two different colors and has very striking markings! The color of her fur is split down the middle like something out of an artist’s imagination, Two-Faced from Batman anyone? Her eyes are also two different colors… one is blue, the other orange! Venus has what’s called “mosaicism” which means her chromosomes aren’t expressing her genes in the regular way. It’s almost like her DNA is trying to show us two cats at the same time! Some think she’s a chimera cat but this has been debunked by scientists. A chimera is an animal made up of two embryos that fuse together very early on creating one organism. Another famous instagram cat is Quimera who has 71,000 followers. Scientists think that these two-faced cats are striking examples of calico cats and it just so happens their colors are divided right down the middle. 8. Strawberry Leopard Leopards are one of nature’s most effective predators. But we can’t help but think this guy’s rep has taken a bit of a dent thanks to his unusual coloring. His coloring doesn’t really help him blend into his surroundings!! The strawberry leopard was spotted… sorry about the joke… in South Africa in 2012. First reported by National Geographic, he’s already good looking enough as it is, but what’s fascinated experts is the pink tinge or hue to his fur. It’s believed he has something called erythrism. Erythrism is what happens when the pigmentation in the skin changes for whatever reason. He either has too much red or too little dark pigment. No-one’s sure which! What is definite is that he is extremely unique. Nothing like this has been captured on camera before. There are drawbacks of course to being the prettiest kitty on the reserve. The strawberry leopard can still camouflage himself but his distinctive markings make him a prime target for human hunters. Let’s hope this amazing creature doesn’t wind up as a trophy over someone’s fireplace! You know how people are... Mermaids Mermaids have been both romanticised and villanised in fiction. We have our lovable Little Mermaid, Ariel, who just wants to be connected with the human world. But then again, we also have the evil but beautiful sirens who would sooner lead humans to their death while making them fall in love with their music. 7. The Beast of Dartmoor In the southwest of England, a cluster of moors called Dartmoor is home to a lot of creepy stories and sightings. Dracula While I could delve into the vast world of vampires throughout history, I’ll just focus on the most famous vampire that there is - Count Dracula. While Bram Stoker’s novel is entirely fictional, he was inspired by someone who is probably the closest historical evidence that we have of a real vampire. 3. Unicorns Now you have unicorn everything!! You can’t step into a clothing store anywhere without seeing something with a unicorn on it. Unicorn makeup, glitter, tears...Starbucks even created a unicorn inspired frappuccino. But where did the idea of unicorns come from? Do people still think they can see them? 2. Bigfoot This list would be incomplete without Big Foot. The sasquatch creature has been an unexplained phenomena for many years. Many people have claimed to have seen him themselves, there’s multiple pictures and videos but none of them are definitive evidence. Like any film taken on an old camera phone, they’re not entirely clear and could be anything - similarly to the Beast of Dartmoor. 1. Mummies The idea of mummies has been scaring children - and some adults - for years. Especially if you’ve seen Scooby Doo, you know that the zombie-like Egyptians can be quite terrifying. Of course, mummification was very real, which is perhaps what makes them so creepy. Eaten By Pigs Ever heard the saying “we’ll feed you to the pigs”. Well, this isn’t just a vernacular convention, but a phrase that’s based in real fact. A while back, in 2012, a veteran who was suffering from stress disorder was looking for a way to cope with what he had seen. In the end, the man turned to raising pigs as a therapeutic exercise. The man’s family said that the pigs had really changed his life for the better. Unfortunately, the pigs would also be the cause of the man’s demise, in the end. One day, the veteran went out to feed his livestock. What happened next is still being debated today, as there was no body to do an autopsy on to discern the cause. It’s speculated that a heart attack caused the veteran to fall into the pig pen, or that some other outside influence made him faint or something. Whatever caused him to fall, in the end, over 99% of his body was consumed by the very same animals that he had come to love. Pigs are more vicious than you think! 8. Wedgie A good many of us did a lot of questionably intelligent things when we were young. TP-ing the neighbor's house on halloween, giving innocent freshmen in our High Schools a hard time, or picking on our little sibling just because we could -- the list really just goes on from there. There’s a myth that’s been floating around a good many years, though, that many might think is just a cautionary tale, dreamed up by parents, and told to their kids to prevent them from picking on anyone who couldn’t fight back. To be fair, the idea that an atomic wedgie really does sound pretty darn far-fetched. The truth is even more odd. It turns out that there is a reported case of a wedgie a man -- again, a man, not a child as the legend falsely goes. A few years ago, a 34-year old man got in an argument with his stepfather of almost 60 years of age. So what did the grown man do to retaliate against his father? Well, he gave him an atomic wedgie to rival them all. Unfortunately, both of the men were likely drunk, based upon what the police who reported the case have said, and the stepfather’s throat became ensnared by the waistband of his underwear after which the aging man was strangled by his own drawers. Quite an embarrassing way to go, but it’s true. 7. Body Under Mattress Legend goes that a couple checks into a run-down, creepy hotel. Ok, maybe not creepy, maybe just a motel 6 or something. Everything’s going fine, until they detect a peculiar smell wafting up from under the place that they’re supposed to be sleeping, their rented bed. The couple decides to investigate, sometimes it's the wife or girlfriend that checks under the bed and sometimes it's the man, but in either case what they find is always the same: a cold and rotting body. This sounds like something that would be told around a raging campfire with s'mores leaking all over the listener’s hands. However, there are a actually more than a few reported cases of bodies actually being found under motel and hotel beds. For example, Richard Kuklinski was a who poisoned a man, before him with the cord of a lamp. After this he stuffed his victim’s body into the bed frame of a motel room in New Jersey. There are other cases of this happening too -- so be careful where you check in for the night. 6. Very Real Halloween Decorations Halloween is a time of tricks, treats, and -- for some -- practical jokes. Sometimes, though, the joke can go a bit too far. There is an urban myth that a man or sometimes a teenager, performs a fake hanging trick to scare their friends. Or whoever. Then something goes wrong and they accidentally hang themselves. Since everyone thinks it’s a trick, no one saves them. In New Jersey, a teenager named Bryan Jewell just like this. In the state of North Carolina, a 15-year-old accidentally hanged himself while performing at a gallows act during a Halloween party. I get scared easily so I stay away from these kinds of things! I’ve never even heard of this kind of party... Headless Gladiators Let's start off with a combat one. In York, England, a large set of skeletal remains were found buried. This isn't too on their own, however, when the remains were fully uncovered, they found that every single person that was buried there was missing their head. 11. Screaming Mummies Sticking with the past in a big way, let's talk about mummies. They're a well-documented part of archaeology, and some of the biggest discoveries in history have been finding mummies and their crypts and tombs and discovering who they were and what they did. 10. Shackled Bodies History is written by the victors, and because of that, the "dirty little secrets" of societies and their rulers have to be dug up and found. One such secret of the ancient Greeks was found in 2016 in Athens. They were trying to dig up ground to make some new buildings. 9. Pit Speaking of unanswered questions, this pit raises plenty more of them. In France, another construction project led to the discovery of something heinous and foul. A literal pit that was over six feet deep and five feet wide. But it’s not called the pit for nothing. Inside the pit were numerous bodies. 8. Vampire Burials Fear is a powerful thing. It can lead people to do things they would never do of their own rational mind. And it can cause them to fear things that are truly irrational. The fear of vampires were a real thing for a long time in the ancient world, and the thought that the could rise again and come for blood made many take "precautions" in order to protect themselves. 7. The Moa Under The Mountain Exploration is key in finding archaeological artifacts, but sometimes even the most hardened of archaeologists can't predict everything they would find. And this particular one is one for the history books. 6. Altamura Man While certain finds can be scary, they can also be fascinating in the historical sense, and one such grand case is the Altamura Man. A cave scientist (yeah, that's a thing, I looked it up) was in Altamura, Italy doing some work, and while examining a particular structure, he turned to find a skeleton looking at him through the rock. 5. Skulls No, that’s right, "Not souls", "skulls". In Sweden, in 2009, some archaeologists were excavating a dried up lake bed. Near the bottom of the lake they found a sealed structure, that's already pretty terrifying, but trust me, it gets worse. Within that stone structure were a set of 11 skulls. 4. The Sewer Of Babies The ancient world did a lot of great and wondrous things. But, it also did a lot of terrible things, including facilitating the of many young babies. Yet, one of the most disturbing finds ever might just be a sewer full of them. 3. Family Betrayal Sometimes the truly terrifying things we find aren't the remains of people, but the stories they leave behind. Yan Shiwei was a prominent member of Chinese society during his time and he loyally served the first female Emperor in Chinese history. 2. Neanderthals The act of a humanoid eating another humanoid. It was once widely felt to be a tribal act, rooted in specific groups of people. Yet, Archaeology has taught us differently. This act goes all the way back to the Neanderthals. 1. Whistles If you recognized this sound earlier, then you know it comes from an Aztec Whistle!! This was discovered when digging up an Aztec grave, where the man, was holding onto the Whistle! Rambo the Alligator When you think about the ideal pets to have around the house, ones with rows of sharp teeth probably wouldn’t be on the top of your list. Mary Thorn, from Florida, doesn’t see it as a problem, though, and even had to plead a case to the authorities to allow her to keep her pet of 10 years, an almost 6 foot long alligator. 4. The Port Jackson Shark Rick Anderson is an Australian diver who regularly swims in the waters off the southern coast. It was still very young, and he approached it and tickled it before giving it a cuddle. 3. Jessica the Hippo Jessica the hippo is famous around the world as being one of the only hippos to be kept in captivity without being contained in an enclosure. But beyond the luxurious castle, extravagant food, and a beautiful daughter that would one day rule, the only thing he truly cared about was his gold. He would spend most of his days counting his gold, and covering himself in it and bathing in it. He was pretty obsessed! 2. Theseus and the Minotaur King Minos of Crete had a problem. His wife, Pasiphae, had cheated on him- sleeping with a bull that had been sent by Zeus. She became pregnant, and gave birth to the Minotaur, a half man, half bull monster. Gulliver’s Kingdom, Japan The Japanese are really something when it comes to business ideas. In 1997, they wanted to open an amusement park based on the famous novel by Jonathan Swift “Gulliver’s Travels”, because who doesn’t want to pretend they are in an 18th century English novel?? Apparently not enough people because the park closed down just 4 years later. I mean it’s not really that trendy when you have Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park. 9. Spreepark, Berlin This place was first opened in 1969 under the name of Kulturpark Plänterwald, in what was then East Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin wall, in 1989, the park was renamed to Spreepark, because it was built right next to the Spree river. It was quite an attraction because, for years, it was the only amusement park in East Germany. 8. L’Aquatic Paradis, Spain This water park was built in Sitges near the city of Barcelona but, unfortunately, it didn’t stay open for long. From the very start, L’Aquatic Paradis was faced with a myriad of problems. It had tons of slides and pools and people were excited about it, but two years after opening there was a tragic accident and then massive debt issues….sound familiar? 7. Akvadroma Water Park, Russia This complex, also known as the Indoor Complex near Moscow was approved for construction in 1997 – the idea was to have a huge center for the upcoming World Youth Games. Lake Dolores, USA This waterpark was the first ever in the United States. It used to be a popular desert attraction but now it is abandoned in the middle of the Mojave Desert, California. It was known as Lake Dolores or Rock-A-Hoola Waterpark, back in the day. The name Dolores actually comes from the name of the person who built it. 5. Dunaújváros Vidámpark, Hungary This Hungarian park was very popular back in the day – the beginnings of this park go back to the 19th century! While it was severely damaged during WWII, in the 60s and 70s, the place was booming because so many people wanted to go! It was fixed up to look like an “English Park” in 1952, but it became even more popular after the Hungarian revolution 4 years later. 4. Holy Land, USA This attraction located in Waterbury, Connecticut was full of religious exhibits and bible studies for the whole family! It was big for around 30 years and attracted about 40,000 people a year to be exact. 3. Joyland, Wichita, USA This amusement park was started by the Ottaway family during the economic boom in Wichita. Lester Ottaway bought a steam locomotive in 1933, and wanted to build something around it, so ergo we have Joyland!! People used to come mostly in the evenings to cool off and enjoy every one’s company, especially since there was no TV! 2. Takakanonuma Greenland, Japan Don’t let the name confuse you- this place is not in Greenland, but Japan! This amusement park was opened back in 1973, but it was closed only two years later. I’m not exactly sure what happened, but official sources said that there just weren’t enough ticket sales. Which means that the Japanese didn’t do a proper market analysis, which doesn’t sound like them at all!! 1. Pripyat Amusement Park, Ukraine This amusement park really didn’t have any luck. It was opened in in the town of Pripyat, north of Kiev, but it didn’t last long. In fact, it lasted for less than one day! Yes, strange as it may sound, this amusement park was closed less than 24 hours after being opened to the public. The City Of Z Sometimes, a legend grows not just because of people spreading it around, but because of those who have been lost trying to prove it!! Like Colonel Percy Fawcett, and the legend of the City Of Z. While the Conquistadors were the first to truly try and search for ancient lost cities in the jungles of South America, one of the more recent explorations for a lost city occurred in 1925. 4. Aztlan If history has taught us anything, it's that where you start is just as important as where you end up. Which makes the Aztec people one of the biggest mysteries history has to offer. During their prime, the Aztec Empire was one of the most powerful empires that the world has ever seen. But, history is baffled in one singular aspect...they don't know where the Aztecs came from. History proves that they were from Mexico, where they dominated for a long time, but originally they migrated there. 3. The Hanging Gardens Of Babylon The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. However, here's the twist, it hasn’t ever actually been found. So if it's never been truly found, why is it such a noted piece of history? Well, this all started with a document written by Berossus of Babylon. Who noted that in the time of 600 B.C., King Nebuchadnezzar II had the Hanging Gardens built in honor of his wife, Amytis. 2. El Dorado The nickname for this legendary city was, "The City Of Gold". This city has been lost in history for centuries, and there have been many, many searches for this place. But how did the legend begin? Atlantis Hands down, the greatest, and longest-reigning legend of a city that is rumored to be out there, yet still has not been found...is Atlantis. It is interesting to note that Atlantis has become a key part of our world’s culture. We talk about Atlantis even though we can't actually confirm that it was a real place. However, many people think it was, and are searching the oceans, and even dried up deserts to this day. Granted, they weren't as big as in those films, they were actually the size of big birds like eagles, but they were still a threat no doubt. 6. Megalania In the Australia during the Ice Age, there was an Apex Predator so feared that it became a part of the legends of the land. The Megalania was a monitor lizard, estimated to be about 23 feet long, even bigger than a crocodile! 5. Utahraptor The name Velociraptor is synonymous with the Jurassic Park films, as they were one of the main "villains" in virtually every movie. But the fact of the matter is...they were about the size of chickens, and might have even had feathers in real life. However, there WERE raptors that were big and dangerous, and could easily raise havoc in the world if they were still alive today, for example the Utahraptor. 4. Short-Faced Bear This bear was one of the fiercest predators to inhabit North America. It lived about 1-2 million years ago and is estimated to have gone extinct about 11,000 years ago. This wasn't just a bear, it was a gigantic bear. When standing on all 4 feet it was about as tall as as a human, about 6 feet tall. 3. Tyrannosaurus Rex The Tyrannosaurus Rex is no doubt one of the most popular and legendary dinosaurs ever discovered. And while the T-Rex may not have been the largest dinosaur around, it was still a terror, and there's a reason many movies and TV shows have made sure to include the T-Rex when they go back to that time period. 2. Saber-Tooth Cats In our world today, we have cheetahs, lions, tigers, panthers, and other "big cats", but not a single one of them compare to the Ice Age wonder that was the Saber-Tooth Tiger. 1. Megalodon Of course I have to include The Megalodon! I know it’s been on all of our minds lately since Discovery’s Shark Week and the new movie The Meg!! If the Megalodon were still alive today, the world would be in trouble. This massive shark was one of the biggest terrors the oceans of the world have ever known. It was THE Apex Predator of the ancient waters, and for good reason. Check out these surprising confessions made by disney employees! These disneyland and disney world workers shared their top 10 secrets of what's really going on in these theme parks from mickey mouse! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Most DISTURBING Secrets About Disney!" video here: https://youtu.be/hQ0FIFYz7P0 Watch our "Most EXPENSIVE Dogs In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/QjoFQKtTYuA Watch our "Pets That RETURNED Home After Being LOST!" video here: https://youtu.be/JZMkZc-lYGE 10. “Have a Magical Day” Employees at the Disney Parks have to meet and greet countless people every day, but while they have to stay on their best behavior when interacting with guests, not every visitor returns the courtesy. Quite often kids will kick the characters, probably more than you think! Or adults will be incredibly rude. Of course there’s no way for the staff to put you in your place if they want to keep their job, because it is the most magical place on Earth remember, except by using what seems like a friendly phrase that you all know! “Have a Magical Day!” is, in fact, their way of telling you where to go. Yes, that’s right, if a Disney Princess, Pirate or even Mickey Mouse says “Have a Magical Day”- they are, in fact, telling you to “Go F Yourself”. Well, that’s according to some staff who used to work at the resorts at least. They are told to make every guest feel as special as possible, and this phrase is usually the one they resort to when they’re dealing with a particular difficult guest and so they say it in a sarcastic way. It’s all about the tone of voice! Don’t panic if it’s said to you and you’ve been polite though, it could just be that they’ve been having a bad day. 9. The Music Keeps Playing That’s right! The music keeps on playing, even when there aren’t any guests. Anyone who’s visited a Disney resort will know how catchy the music can be- sometimes it takes days for you to clear your head of it all, you know the one! Especially from rides like “It’s a Small World”! Well, take a moment to think about the poor ride operators who sit there listening to the music on continuous loop all day long- and it’s not just while the rides are in operation. The CIA uses music on a repeated loop to torture and break prisoners, and they have said it is very effective! To learn more be sure to check out my Facts About the CIA video!! One of the songs they use? It’s a small world. According to some former employees, the music continues well past the time the last guest has ridden, as they need to continually check and test the experience to ensure it’s living up to the entertainment and safety standards that you’d expect. Even the janitors sweep the place with the full music playing- something that would be taxing even for the most committed of Disney fans! 8. Fired for Taking a Selfie One of the rules of working at Disney is that you must stay in character at all times. This means answering every question in the way that your character would, knowing everything about the movies that they were in, and never shattering the illusion. If you play Mulan and some tourists come up to you and try to speak Chinese- you’d better have a good reason why you aren’t able to speak it back to them. It’s also not a great job for celebrity spotting, because if you see one you can’t go up and talk to them unless they approach you, and you absolutely mustn’t ruin any of the behind the scenes magic. This means taking photos of yourself while getting ready, or backstage in the resort, is completely banned- there have been numerous accounts of staff members who have done this and lost their jobs soon after. If you want a picture of yourself dressed up as Cinderella, you’d be much safer getting a friend to visit the park and getting a snap for you. And it better be in character and not in between! You have to keep the magic real!! 7. Security is EVERYWHERE Just as you’d find with any amusement park, there are prominently placed security staff all around Disney, but what you might not realize is that those visible guards are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to park security. Which is a good thing in this day in age. Talk about shattering the illusion. There must never be any bad event at Disney ever!! The Cup of Jamshid Persepolis was one of the most important cities of the Persian empire, and for more than 200 years served as its capital- mainly thanks to its ruler, Jamshid, who according to legend, presided over the city for hundreds of years. So how was he able to live and let alone rule for 200 years?? 7. According to legend, the gem fell from the stars and landed in Tibet, where the Buddhists worshipped it as a spiritual jewel. The Apple of Eris The Golden Apple of Eris was, perhaps, the most controversial artifact in mythology, and one that would set some of the most renowned events into action. 3. The Club of Dagda This next treasure comes from Irish mythology, where Dagda was one of the most important of a race of Gods known as the Tuatha De Danann. He was the god of knowledge, abundance, of life and of death… and he could even control the weather to affect the harvest. He had a cauldron of plenty and two pigs that he used to help feed people, but his most famed possession was his club. 2. The Peaches of Immortality Said to have grown in the garden of a Chinese goddess, the peaches of immortality, quite predictably, grant those fortunate enough to eat them with never-ending life. They are mentioned in Taoist mythology and are so special that they would only ripen after a very long time, at which point they were served at a banquet for the immortals. 1. The Golden Fleece The Golden Fleece is one of the most famous treasures from mythology, having been the prize that Jason and his Argonauts sought in order for him to take his rightful place on the throne of Iolcus. Iceland’s Silfra Rift is a deep crack in the ocean that goes down between the North American and Eurasian continents, and really brings to light the powerful geological processes that occur on our planet. 9. The Rainbow Mountains There are many astonishing geological sights in the world, but none are more mysterious and unexpected as the rainbow mountains at the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in Gansu, China. 8. Caño Cristales Colombia’s Caño Cristales, or the Crystal Channel, is often referred to as the liquid rainbow. It’s a river like no other in the world and, until the 2000’s, was completely inaccessible because of guerrilla activity in the region. Now, though, the Colombian military has secured the nearby town of La Macarena, which has opened up the tourism industry for those wanting to be enraptured by the spectacular sight. 7. Giant Crystal Cave While we may understanding a lot of what happens on our planet’s surface, very little is known about what happens underneath it. At the turn of the century, two miners in Mexico who were searching for lead, made an unbelievable discovery- a cave full of giant crystals. 6. Predator X Predator X is the most powerful marine reptile ever discovered. Over 15 meters long, and weighing about 4 tons, it was twice as big as most Jurassic predators. The giant reptile roamed the seas about 150 million years ago and was officially classified as a new species. Now known as Pliosaurus funkei, it had a massive 2m skull with a bite four times as powerful as a Tyrannosaurus rex. (Although I prefer the name Predator X). Studies of the brain cavity of Predator X has revealed that its brain was actually similar to the much smaller great white shark?. In 2006, scientists found two massive pliosaur skeletons in Norway. The giant creatures, looked slightly different from other pliosaurs discovered in England and France over the last century and a half. The pliosaur family had short necks and four large, paddle-shaped limbs like a turtle that allowed them to move up to 5m per second. The newly discovered funkei species likely lived closer to 145 million years ago and ate plesiosaurs, related long-necked, small-headed reptiles. The new analysis shows P. funkei had longer front paddles than other pliosaurs, and different teeth. This predator is still bigger than the largest living apex predator, the whale, which tops out at about 9m (30 ft) long. 8. Plesiosaurs Plesiosaurs were a group of marine reptiles, or dinosaurs-that-weren’t-actually-dinosaurs but lived at the same time during the Jurassic Period. It had a tiny head and a long neck, paddle flippers, and a tail. Even though it was smaller than Predator X, Its mouth was full of needle-like teeth pointing inward, a perfect death trap for prey and for ripping flesh. In 1987 a plesiosaur fossil was discovered with the bones of an embryo in its abdomen, proving that the animal gave birth to live young. This creature seems to have somehow given rise to the Loch Ness Monster as the physical description is very similar. Plesiosaurs would swallow stones weighing about 5 pounds (2.2kg) to help them digest their prey. If there was one plesiosaur you needed to watch out for, it was Liopleurodon (lye plur i dun). This carnivorous beast could weigh over 3,500 pounds and reach over 30 feet in length, including jaws that are believed to be 10 feet alone, complete, of course, with a very wide jaw and several rows of razor-sharp teeth. Their bodies consisted of a unique, paddle design for limbs, which has been tested and proven on small swimming robots that the Liopleurodon would not have been super fast they were terrifyingly agile. Most likely they hunted similar to the crocodiles of today, with short and fast burst attacks. So that makes them just perfect for any underwater haunted...aquarium. 7. Giant Sea Scorpion (Jaekelopterus rhenaniae) Since there is no way I can pronounce this we'll just call this one the Giant Sea Scorpion. Larger than a human and about the size of a crocodile (2.5m), the 390-million-year-old sea scorpion was the top predator of its day. This was one of the two largest arthropods to have ever lived, reaching a length of over 8 feet of armored, clawed horror. Most of us freak out at the thought of a tarantula, so it’s easy to imagine screaming like a banshee if you ever swam by one of these. A huge fossilized spiky claw discovered in Germany in 2007 measured 18 inches (46 cm). We've known about super sized insects for years now but it wasn't until this discovery that scientists realized just how big some of these creepy crawlies could get. The next biggest fossil arthropods were massive millipedes that grew more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) long, 6. Basilosaurus The Basilosaurus’ name and appearance make it seem like an ancient reptile, but it’s actually a blood-thirsty ancestor of today’s whales. It's ironic given that its name means “King Lizard,” but that is because when it was discovered by Richard Owen in 1834, it was thought be a reptile. It wasn't until over 10 years later that he discovered it was actually a mammal and tried to rename it the Zeuglodon, meaning Yoke Tooth, but that didn’t catch on.

But back in 2014, a Goat was born with eight legs on a farm in northeast Croatia. The owner’s name is Zoran Paparic, whose mother goat named Sarka, gave birth to this ‘octogoat.’ It is Believed that this goat merged with its twin while in the womb, one was a boy and another a girl, so the goat not only has eight legs, but both male and female reproductive organs. The Siamese goats had two healthy siblings that were born the same night. When the owner saw the octogoat, he said, “I counted his legs and I thought I was seeing things. Then I called my neighbor to make sure that I am not crazy.” The media hasn’t followed up with Zoran, so we do not know if the kid survived or not. Vets predicted that he would not live long due to his deformity. That he would either be Too weak to live or the mother would reject him. But, we are still unsure, so all we can do is hope that the adorable little octogoat has found a way to live life with eight legs. #8 Froggy Ten years before octogoat was born, an interesting frog known as “Froggy” made his debut. Froggy is a three-headed, six-legged mutant frog was discovered in the garden of the seaside resort's Green Umbrella nursery. The kids were amazed when a staff member presented him to the class, ages three to four, and decided to name him Froggy. Of course! What else were they going to call him! They only had the frog for one day before he escaped, but within that time he attracted children and parents of all kinds. It is believed the Mutation was caused by a genetic defect or pollution of the waters he was born in. Many even shun the idea that it was a real thing, believing that it was simply three frogs stacked on top of each other. Still, The mutation pictured is very extreme and very unusual; it’s a shame that scientists couldn’t get ahold of it before he hopped away. But then, again, there would have been some very disappointed children if that were the case. Children and adults alike are still asking questions such as “How does it eat?” and “How many organs does it have?” but unfortunately it looks like we’ll never know. Nor will we know if the staff misinterpreted this frog and it really was three very close amphibians! #7 We This mutant may be the scariest of them all! Its name is “We,” and it is a two-headed albino snake. The snake joined those at the World Aquarium in St. Louis in 1999 when he was no bigger than a pencil. They paid $15,000, even though they knew that mutated animals such as “We” rarely live long. But it looks like their high hopes paid off, The snake lived to be 8-years-old and became the main attraction at the World Aquarium. We, at five feet long, died in 2007 of natural causes. People from all around mourned the loss, for it was a Daily occurrence for people to walk in and ask to see “We” The only thing to see now is a taxidermist-prepared body of the snake. Not quite the same thing... Children especially liked to see We attempt to move in different directions, because since it had two heads and 2 brains there was a struggle for which side could make the decisions! Could you imagine having an argument with yourself? That just sounds like a lose-lose situation… We had both male and female reproductive organs, but despite the aquarium’s attempts, it could not be bred. It’s gender confusion was the reason for its name as it didn’t feel right calling We a he or a she…since it was both! We appeared on shows such as "Live with Regis and Kelly" and attracted over a million visitors in his lifetime. #6 “Flying” Cat So, maybe cats can’t fly, but there have been Multiple instances in which they were born with real wings! There are three different likely causes of wing-like appendages in cats. Of course, Matted fur is one, when the fur binds together and sticks up, but this is not really a mutation. The second cause is a condition called feline cutaneous asthenia. It can occur on the shoulders, haunches, or back. The cats can move these growths just like a bird can move its wings. Weird huh? The third cause is a mutation of supernumerary limbs. These growths are non-functioning and often resemble wings. Whatever the cause, over the years, More than 138 cats have been reported to have wings. There are over 30 documented cases, 20 photographs, and one video.

Yo-Yo The ancient Greeks are known for many wonderful creations and inventions, but as a vase from 440 B.C. shows, they were apparently masters of recreation and finding ways to entertain themselves too. How so? Well, because this vase shows a woman playing with an object that is clearly a Yo-Yo. That's right, apparently, Yo-Yo's were around in 440 BC, and the Greeks seemed to love them so much that they put them into art pieces. 13. Diagnosis: Earwax Whether it was the Greeks, the Romans, the Chinese, Egyptians, or any other famous culture in between, there are always "unique" medical practices that you can find from their early days. In regards to the Greeks, they had a very interesting practice where if you were sick, the doctor wouldn't start checking you out until he had a taste of your earwax. 11. Female Eyebrows That's not to say that ancient Greece didn't have certain philosophies and beliefs for the female body, because goddesses were also represented. But they were especially interested in their eyebrows. For unlike today, where a unibrow is "frowned upon" in terms of beauty, the Greeks really liked them. 10. To Wipe, Or Not To Wipe When it comes to thinking about times before modern amenities, one of the biggest topics brought up is about toilet paper. After all, toilet paper wasn't widely circulated until the 1800's, so that's thousands of years of people having to go to the bathroom and not having toilet paper, so what did people like the ancient Greeks use when they had to go? 9. Athletic Sweat Perks Greek culture revered their sports athletes, after all, this is the civilization that created the Olympics. But in some ways, it was more than just reverence, the very bodies and fluids of these athletes were believed to be gifts straight from the gods and everything they emitted was mystical, including their sweat. 7. A "Fine" Wine When you think about ancient Greeks, you probably think that this culture loved to have social events and parties, and that they would drink heavily all the time. While it's true that ancient Greeks loved their wines, they rarely drank them as they were. Meaning, they would actually "dilute" the wine with water to ensure that they didn't get drunk. 5. Musically Inclined The men of Greece were known to be athletes, and warriors, and of course, politicians, but what many don't know is that a vast majority of male Greeks, regardless of their social status or job, were very well versed in music. In fact, it's said that most men in Greece knew how to play at least one musical instrument, if not more. 4. Spartan Romance The Spartan culture was a very intense one, and that applied not only to their training (which led them to be some of the best warriors in the world) but how they got married, and what would happen when they did. 3. Olympics Are Not For The Married This is an odd custom that was discovered about ancient Greece. Mainly, if you were a married woman, you could NOT watch the Olympics, at all. 2. Political Exile Politicians are a group of people that are both respected and despised, and this isn't just from the modern world. Ancient Greece had that problem too. Remember, the Greeks were the creators of democracy, and they made positions to help the will of the people be known, ergo: politicians. However, the Greeks had the never changing issue of politicians becoming corrupt in their position, and trying to amass power. And to make matters a bit creepier, they began hearing slithering sounds coming from inside their walls. 2.) Unknown Man E In the late 1880’s, Dr. Fouquet and a chemist, M. Mathey, discovered what they called a tortured mummy. Mathey's report about the mummy appeared first in the Bulletin de l'Institut Egyptien in 1886, soon after the mummy was unwrapped. The mummy had been enshrouded by a sheepskin which still retained its white wool. 1.) Bones in the Basement A construction crew working on a woman’s 100-year-old Wisconsin home made a gruesome discovery. When one of the crew members began digging with a backhoe and dumped the second scoop of dirt, a human skull rolled out. It was soon determined by the Wisconsin Historical Society’s burial sites program that this area was actually the remnants of the community’s first documented cemetery, which was sold and relocated many years before. Biggest Goldfish It’s not often you think of Goldfish as being very big- after all they’re a prize given away at fair grounds in small plastic bags, but sometimes they can grow to be enormous. When Ada Shaw, of Folkestone in England, bought her pet from a shop for less than a dollar, she couldn’t have known the relationship she’d come to develop with the fish. She named it “Goldie”, and began to take care of it like no one has ever looked after a goldfish before! There are two amazing things about Goldie- how long he lived, and how large he became. Goldfish will usually live for a maximum of ten years, but Goldie was 15 years old in 2012 when official measurements were taken. It had also grown to enormous proportions, more than 3 times longer than a typical fish, at 15.7 inches, and weighing a whopping 2 pounds. Ada Shaw had three pieces of advice to budding Goldfish owners who wanted to take the best care of their pet. Lot’s of love and attention, good food, and some warm water in the tank. She would feed it flakes at the same time every day, spend hours talking to it, and left a light on at night to ensure he was never left in the dark. They developed such a bond that when she’d come home after a day out, the fish would whizz around the tank for a few minutes in excitement to see her. How many of you can say that about the fish in your aquarium?? 9. Smallest Cat Ever Guinness World Records no longer accept new entries to the categories of largest pets, because they realized that this was encouraging owners to overfeed or drug their animals in order to get their brief moment of fame. This doesn’t, however, affect their acknowledgement of small animals, and the smallest cat on record is simply unbelievable. Tinker Toy was born in 1990, and was a male blue point Himalayan-Persian. He was owned by Katrina and Scott Forbes of Taylorville in Illinois, and was absolutely miniscule. When he had become fully grown at two and a half years old, he measured only 2.75 inches tall and 7.5 inches long. While the breed is naturally small compared to others, Tinker Toy was exceptionally small all through his life until he died in 1997. 8. House Hippo Hippos are often regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on the planet, so it may come as a surprise that Tonie and Shirley Joubert from Limpopo in South Africa have adopted one as a pet- virtually raising it as their own child. But Jessica is no ordinary hippo, and she has a rather unusual story. She was born in 2000, and was separated from her family by devastating floods that hit the region that year. The Joubert’s were out walking one day, and saw a small hippo calf looking up at them from the waters of a nearby river. Clearly exhausted and unable to free herself from the raging waters, the couple rushed down to help free her. From that moment a bond was formed, and Jessica went on to be one of the most famous hippos in the world. Knowing that she stood very little chance of surviving on her own, they took her home with them and looked after her themselves. Today she has grown into an adult Hippo, but because she has spent her whole life in the presence of humans, she’s incredibly friendly and playful with visitors- unlike those that you’d encounter in the wild. She still interacts with other hippos, as she’s allowed to roam freely, but she always returns home and feels safest with her human companions. They feed her milk from a bottle, and she has been featured in more than 90 different movies and documentaries. At 1.2 tons, it’s no mean feat caring for a creature like this, but it’s proof that no matter how dangerous an animal is, there’s always room for them to get along well with caring humans. Check out the strangest planets in space! These planet discoveries in the universe will definitely get you thinking! HD 188753 A planet was discovered to have not one, not two, but three suns glowing in the sky. It is located in HD 188753, a triple-star system located 149 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Similar to Luke Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine that had 2 suns, this Jupiter-like planet must have spectacular sunsets. The main star is similar in mass to our own sun and it orbits very close to it, completing one orbit every 3.5 days. It is still a complete mystery as to how this planet formed in such a complicated setting as the 3 stars would all be pulling it in 3 different directions. 9. CoRoT-7b This volcanic inferno was the first rocky planet confirmed to be orbiting another star outside of our solar system. Known as a Super Earth, it orbits a star 480 light-years away and weighs about 5x the mass of Earth. It is 23x closer to its star than Mercury is to our sun, bringing its surface temperature up to a hellish 4,000 degrees Farenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius). The same side is always facing the star and the other side is always in shadow, where temperatures can drop to minus 350 F (minus 210 C). This rocky planet may be the left-over core of a former gas giant whose atmosphere evaporated a long time ago. If so, it would be the first kind of this type of planet. The extreme heat is so terrible that it can actually vaporize rock. It's atmosphere could have weather systems that cause pebbles to condense out of the air and rain rocks onto the molten surface of the planet. Since it is so close to its star, it is very likely that this planet was once much larger, and is now evaporating before our eyes. 8. TrES-2b: The Dark Planet Since the Dark Planet is much more memorable name than TrES-2b, we'll just stick with that. This planet is literally darker than coal. Discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope in 2006, it is the size of Jupiter and orbits a star around 750 light-years from Earth. It's nickname, the ‘Dark Planet’ comes from its unique status as the darkest planetary object in the known Universe. This gas giant is heated to 1800 degrees Farenheit (980 degrees Celsius) , and orbits extremely close to its parent star. According to current computer models, hot planets like Jupiter that are gas giants could only be as dark as Mercury, which reflects only 10% if sunlight that hits it. It is very strange that the Dark Planet only reflects about 1% of the light that hits it. It is even less reflective than coal and black acrylic paint. If we could see it up-close, it would look like a black ball of gas with a faint red glow. 7. 55 Cancri e – The Diamond Planet Initially discovered in 2004, 55 Cancri e (also known as Janssen) has been a mystery ever since the first analyses came through about its composition. Approximately the mass of 8 earths, it orbits its host star about 40 light years away from our solar system. Temperatures reach up to 3,100 Fahrenheit, and measurements of a transit captured in 2011 made it possible to calculate its density, and this is where it got interesting. It appears that this planet is actually solid and made up of a carbon-rich material, rather than the oxygen rich material that forms the rocky planets in our solar system. As a result it is very likely that this rocky planet is covered in carbon that has turned into diamond and graphite. According to the current market value of the diamond, it would be worth $26.9 nonillion. Forbes states that only 0.182% of the planet would need to be mined to pay back the entire debt that has been accumulated by all the governments on earth. 6. WASP-12b The ‘Wide Area Search for Planets’, also known as WASP, first discovered this planet in 2008, 600 light-years away. It orbits incredibly close to its parent star, about 1/44th of the distance that our planet orbits our sun, giving it a surface temperature of around 2200 degrees Celsius (3992 degree Farenheit). It is the hottest known planet in the Milky Way and it may also be the shortest-lived. The doomed planet is getting eaten by its parent star and the star's tidal forces are pulling away its atmosphere, turning it into an egg shape. This is the first time that we have been able to observe a star consuming a planet so clearly. At the current rate, WASP-12B may be entirely gone within 10 million years.

Templar sympathizers supposedly helped hide the Knights’ treasures under a chapel until the New World was discovered. Descendants of the Templar fled to Nova Scotia in Canada, Leaving marks on old maps and gravestones giving credit to this legend. There is a theory that the Knight Templar buried their treasure in a pit discovered in Canada. In 1795, Daniel McGinnis discovered this pit and started digging. He and his friends began hitting wooden planks every 10 feet and the The Money Pit has drawn many treasure seekers over the years. People have found layers of logs, charcoal, coconut fiber and putty. Among the biggest discoveries were A set of stone inscriptions found 90 feet below. Symbols on the stones were translated as “forty feet below lie two million pounds.” The pit floods as excavations get deeper so Nobody really knows what’s actually at the bottom. Forrest Fenn’s Treasure Forrest Fenn has Hidden over a million dollars worth of treasure and wants you to find it! When he was 9 years old, Fenn found an arrowhead near his family’s home in Texas, triggering a life-long passion for historical artifacts. Fenn is now An 85-year-old millionaire, treasure hunter, and art dealer in Santa Fe, New Mexico. (Not really new, not really Mexico). In 1988 Fenn was diagnosed with kidney problems and thought he only had about year to live. 20 years later he had beaten the disease and completed his plan of hiding a treasure chest somewhere in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. No one knows for sure how he became a millionaire and He has even been investigated by the FBI. His reputation in the archaeological world is not exactly pristine and he has been accused of being a looter and grave robber. In 2010 he self-published a book: The Thrill of the Chase which contains clues and a poem directing treasure hunters to his estimated $1 to $3 million worth of historical artifacts. The chest dates back to the year 1150 and is said to contain pre-Columbian gold, Chinese jade carvings, and a 17th-century Spanish ring with emeralds, rubies, and diamonds. His Goal is to leave a legacy and get people to enjoy the outdoors while searching for the treasure. Many argue that the treasure is not, in fact, real, suggesting that it is simply a way to push sales of his memoir. However the rights belong to the Collected Works Bookstore in Santa Fe and half of the profits go to a charity. Hundreds of people have contacted Fenn begging for more clues but his lips are sealed! It sounds like if you’ve got a free summer, Forrest Fenn’s treasure might well be worth the hunt! Be sure to read his poem with clues to the treasure and let us know if you find anything! The Treasure of San Miguel After the Succession which saw Phillip V’s ascension to the throne, The Spanish were desperately short of funds. In 1712 Spain began to assemble one of the richest treasure fleets with ships filled with silver, gold, pearls, and jewels worth about $2 billion by today's standards. By 1715, 11 ships were ready to depart from Cuba to Spain right before hurricane season to deter pirates and privateers. This turned out to be a huge mistake and all were sunk near Vero Beach, Florida just a week into the voyage. Over 1,000 sailors didn't make it and it took the Spanish Almost 4 years to recover half the treasure that was initially lost.

Dunkleosteus Long before the age of the dinosaurs, and even before gigantic sharks roamed the seas, there was the Dunkleosteus. This fish was one of the last arthrodires which meant they had thick, bony plates covering their skull. This fish was so strong it may have had a bite that was more powerful than anything else on Earth, both before or since. 8. Liopleurodon The Liopleurodon was a giant, marine reptile, but there is a big debate between scientists whether this massive creature was only 20 feet, or actually 50 feet, if not longer. The BBC series "Walking With Dinosaurs" used certain evidence to depict it as 80+ feet long, though many have discredited this series because the findings were based on "fragmentary" evidence. 7. Gorgonopsia These creatures known as “Gorgon face” were some of the largest carnivores in the late Permian period, about 299 to 251 million years ago. With that name, honoring the Greek monsters, you know that they weren’t cute. Based on fossil evidence, they are synapsids, tetrapods that included the ancestors of mammals so many people thought they actually were. 6. Arthropleura Insects may be small in the modern world, but 315 to 299 million years ago, the world was a different place!! Arthropleura could reach between 6 feet to 8.5 feet in length, making it the largest land-dwelling bug in history!! This invertebrate of the Carboniferous era is the ancestor to the modern millipede. It was a actually a vegetarian, and scientists believe that it liked to feast on dead plant matter more than anything else. 5. Estemmenosuchus The thing that draws most people to the Estemmenosuchus is the shape of its skull. It is without a doubt one of the most interesting skull types in history. In fact, its what helped it earn it its name, because Estemmenosuchus means "crowned crocodile" in Greek. A group of them were found in Russia and scientists discovered many skeletons of two different species together. 4. Helicoprion Found 290 million years ago, the Helicoprion was a shark with a spiral-toothed jaw resembling a circular saw. It took a long time for scientists to figure out where these spiral teeth went or how they worked. Since shark skeletons are made of cartilage that doesn’t preserve well, there were many, many drawings of scientists trying to guess!! 3. Terror Birds Once the velociraptor and T-Rex were wiped out, the terror bird became the most terrifying predator of what is now South America about 62 million years ago and stayed that way until about 2 million years ago! Their more scientific name was Phorusrhacids, but hey, a rose by any other name can still have a beak with enough power to cut a spinal cord in half. 2. Sarcosuchus Existing at around 112 million years ago, the Sarcosuchus is affectionately known as the "Super Croc", and for very obvious reasons. Not the least of which is that this mammoth creature is double the size of most modern crocodiles, coming in at about 40 feet long. 1. Azhdarchid The Azhdarchid Pterosaur was giant, long-necked animals that had a bill like a stork. These flying creatures lived around 140 million years ago. However, what separates the Azhdarchid from the rest of the Pterosaur family is not their age, or their appetite, it's their size and body proportions. The Lost City of Giants Deep in the Ecuadorian jungle, explorers discovered a lost city in 2012. However, it certainly wasn’t any normal ancient city. It is known as the “Lost City of Giants.” According to reports, upon arrival, the explorers found a set of massive structures, the largest being a 79-meter-tall by 79-meter-wide (260 ft x 260 ft) pyramid of unusual shape. At the top of the pyramid is a flat, polished stone, believed to have been a sacrificial altar. The magnitude of these buildings is what gives the city its name and leads many archaeologists to believe that giants did build and inhabit the city, although many others remain skeptical on that point. What makes this discovery even more peculiar is not just the buildings themselves but also the tools and artifacts found there. Many oversized, manufactured tools were said to have been discovered, allegedly so big that it would be impossible for humans to use them. The team that discovered the city believes that the tools are a crucial piece of evidence that in the distant past, giants once walked the Earth. 7. Maricoxi The Maricoxi are essentially the sasquatches of South America. They are reported to be huge, ape-like beings that can stand up to 3.7 meters (12 ft) tall. Although they appear primitive, they’re said to be fairly intelligent, wielding bows and arrows and even living in villages. According to British explorer Colonel Percival H. Fawcett, who allegedly encountered the creatures while mapping out the jungles of South America in 1914, they were extremely hairy and lived north of a tribe called the Maxubi. They could only speak in grunts and were extremely hostile toward humans. In the colonel’s book, Lost Trails, Lost Cities, he describes how he and his men were nearly attacked by the beasts when they got close to their village. However, they were able to keep the beasts away by firing their guns into the ground by the creatures’ feet, sending them running in terror. In 1925, Fawcett disappeared along with all his men while on an expedition to find a lost city. Theories suggest that they were killed by local tribes or died of starvation. However, some say they were killed by the Maricoxi, although there is no evidence to back this up. 6. Boiling River When he was only a boy, Andrés Ruzo, a geophysicist, heard a legend from his grandfather. This legend was about how the conquistadors went in search of El Dorado, the city of gold, deep in the Amazonian jungles. The fortunate few survivors of the expedition returned with all sorts of stories, ranging from man-eating snakes, jungle people with poison darts, trees bigger than they’d ever seen, and a boiling river capable of instantly killing anyone who would fall in its waters. This story remained with Ruzo into his adulthood. For his PhD, he decided to make Peru’s first detailed geothermal map. Boiling streams do exist. They are located near volcanoes or other geothermal hotspots. The Amazonian basin is nowhere near such places, and the existence of a boiling river would be next to impossible. However, as fate would have it, his aunt, of all people, was familiar with the boiling river. Not only had she been there before, but she was friends with the river shaman’s wife. She took Ruzo there, some 440 miles away from any volcanoes, and deep within the Peruvian jungle. The river itself is about 82 feet wide and 20 feet deep in some places, and for a distance of about 4 miles, its waters are close to boiling point. This site is known as Mayantuyacu, and is considered sacred by the natives. They use its waters for everything from cooking, brewing tea, or washing. Because Mayantuyacu is nowhere near a volcano, there isn’t a simple answer as to where the heat comes from. The best explanation so far, is that this water comes from far away, as far as the glaciers high up in the Andes Mountains. Then it goes through an immense network of fissures within the mountains themselves, then deep underground where it’s heated, only to come back out in this place, making this stretch of the river boil. 5. The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica Ever since the late 1930s, people have been discovering strange stone spheres scattered all across southern Costa Rica. Mosquitoes If there’s one species that annoys the heck out of everyone it’s the mosquito, right? They not only give us irritating bites and buzz in your ear, but they can also transmit diseases like malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, and much more. In fact mosquitoes are responsible for killing almost 1 million people a year…this is no joke. 9. Passenger Pigeon The passenger pigeon has been extinct since 1914 but the passenger pigeon made a big impact on history. They used to be found in the billions in North America and were noted for their red chests and tails which were shaped like wedges. Everything was going great until one thing happened… the invention of the telegraph in the mid 1800s. 8. Western Black Rhinoceros This subspecies of the black rhino was officially declared extinct in 2011. The Western black rhinoceros used to be a stunning feature of African wildlife. Sadly like many of its kind it was killed by poachers for its horn, which some believed had medicinal properties. But others just like having the horn on display for status purposes. You know, something to talk about with your friends. 7. The Dodo Bird Everyone’s heard of the dodo right? It even made an appearance in ‘Alice In Wonderland’…? Well in case you haven’t, it was a goofy-looking thing, it couldn’t fly and was apparently extremely delicious. It became extinct when sailors landed on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean in the late 16th century. The hungry Dutchmen kept on eating the dodo until there was nothing left! 6. Pyrenean Ibex In this case, we have a d-extinction? Thanks to science, extinction can be reversed and an interesting example of this was the Pyrenean Ibex, a wild goat that also has the Spanish title ‘bucardo’. These hardy little guys used to roam the Iberian Peninsula. Their distinctive horns were thick and curved on the males and shorter and thin on the females. 5. La Pinta Island tortoise La Pinta Island is part of the legendary Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. These islands were immortalized by Charles Darwin when he used the wildlife there as inspiration for the theory of evolution we still rely on today. Also known as ‘Abingdon Island’, La Pinta played host to a giant species of tortoise. 4. Quagga Until the late 1800s quaggas were a common sight in South Africa. A quagga was essentially a zebra only with a brown bottom half. It was a subspecies of the plains zebra and fell prey to hunters, who killed so many they wiped them off the map. For over a hundred years Mankind never saw a live quagga but then The Quagga Project started. 3. Tasmanian Tiger This Tasmanian Tiger isn’t exactly a tiger, it just got called that because of its stripes. The correct name was ‘thylacine’ and it was actually a large marsupial like a kangaroo. It also lived on the Australian mainland as well as Tasmania. 2. Steller’s Sea Cow If any species had it rough it was the Steller’s sea cow. This also includes manatees. Named after George W. Steller, the naturalist who discovered them in 1741, they were part of the ecosystem on the Komander Islands in the Bering Sea. 1. Great Auk The big name when it comes to extinct species is probably the Great Auk. It’s been referred to as the “original penguin” and you can see why. It’s black and white, short and it can’t fly. Look at that huge beak too. This little bird wouldn’t look out of place in ‘Happy Feet’. Check out the most amazing waterslides ever created! This top 10 list of highest, biggest and most insane water slides in the world has some of the most amazing slides! Black Hole Ah, what a better way to start off this list than with a waterslide that actually sounds like a trap! Now, there are many water parks that have a slide called the Black Hole (I had my own personal embarrassing happen on one of them actually), but the one I am speaking of is in Orlando, Florida at the Wet N’ Wild Water Park. 7. The Rapids Before I go into details on this one, you need some context. This slide made it onto this list because of a mechanical malfunction that almost created a disaster. It was not a design flaw like many other rides on this list. Now you know. 6. The Aqua Sphere The Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Center is home to a ride known as the Aqua Sphere, and it's not hard to see how it got the name with those massive sphere popping out in certain places. Side note, there are a lot of slides that have "aqua" in the title. Why? Are they struggling to come up with good names for the rides? Or are they just trying to be super clear about what the ride entails? Anyway, let’s move on. 5. The Aqua Loop Loops are a key attraction at both amusement parks and water parks. But the main problem with designing a ride with loops is that if you don't get enough speed, you're not going around it. This is what happened with one woman in Australia who rode The Aqua Loop. 4. The Verrückt Part of the fun of going on a waterslide is seeing the way it's designed. Since it's a park, it's meant to incite feelings of awe and wonder of what going on the different slides will be like. But, since they are competing to be cool and cause excitement, it can have some bad side effects, including. 3. Streamer Slide When it comes to waterslides, there are two ways to go down. One, is bare body, which is standard in most slides. The other is by inner tube, which can be solo or in tandem depending on the ride. In regards to the tubes, there's always a danger of not holding on and losing them. But the truly dangerous waterslides are the ones that make those tubes flip with you in it. 2. Aqua Nova Adventure Pool This one is actually really terrifying, and not even in the way you’d expect but it needs to be said. You go on waterslides to have fun, to enjoy the water park and hang out in the pool. It's great, except when the ending dangerous, especially for women. 1. Cannonball Loop Ok, this one had to be at the top of the list. Now, yes, it's not "in" the world anymore, but it was for a month, and from start to finish this waterslide was not only dangerous, it was potentially lethal, and yet the people who made it and ran the park didn't care. Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you...the Cannonball Loop. Check out the Most MYSTERIOUS Facts About The Knights Templar! From the amazing history of crusaders to hidden holy grails and conspiracies, this top 10 list of fascinating mysteries about the knights templar is really intriguing! Who were the Knights Templar? The first crusade was a military campaign organized by western rulers, the Pope, and the Byzantine Empire to take Jerusalem away from Muslim control. In the year 1099, the capture of Jerusalem led to thousands upon thousands of Christian pilgrims making the journey to the Holy Land. While the city itself was secure, the area around it, known as Outremer, was a place of bandits and marauders. 9. The Temple of Solomon While in Jerusalem, the order set up their headquarters in the building that was formerly the Al Aqsa mosque, from where they organized their operations. There was more to this choice of location than many believed, as the Knights believed it to be the site of the Temple of Solomon. The building stood on the Temple Mount, which was where the vast temple of the Jews of the Old Testament once stood, and while the buildings atop the mount had long been destroyed, the Knights suspected there may still be hidden structures beneath. 8. Temple Church The Knights Templar had strongholds across Europe, but there’s actually one that you can visit today! In an area of London, England, known as ‘Temple’, you can walk through a stone archway onto Inner Temple lane where you’ll find yourself surrounded by gothic and Victorian architecture. It was here that the Knights Templar built monastic dormitories and chambers and, most significantly, the Temple Church. 7. Rosslyn Chapel The chapel in the town of Rosslyn, just to the south of Edinburgh in Scotland, is inconspicuous at first glance, but its links with the Knights Templar have led to theories suggesting it’s the hiding place of something incredibly significant. If the weather-worn gothic architecture seems familiar, then you may know this place from the movie, the Da Vinci Code, which featured the chapel. 6. The 12 Who Escaped According to legend, during the rounding up and execution of the Knights Templar in France, it’s thought that 24 managed to escape. 12 of this group were named in a document from 1307, which suggests that they were, in particular, being searched for by the king, but what was so special about them? 5. Templar Towns As we have seen, the Knights Templar constructed buildings across Europe, and maintained a stronghold in Jerusalem for as long as possible, but did you know that they also built entire towns? Partly as a result of the wealth, they accumulated, and because they needed to provide their followers with secure places to live, these Templar outposts can be found throughout Europe, particularly in the hills on the border between Spain and Portugal. 4. Did they Visit America? Following the arrest of most of the order, those who evaded capture fled to far-flung places, and some believe they may even have made it as far as the Americas. When the French authorities raided the Paris Temple, they found it to be completely empty. 3. Supposed Worship of Baphomet One of the claims against the Templars, when they were arrested, was of blasphemy. While they disputed this, they certainly had some unusual rituals, one of which was supposedly the worship of Baphomet. You may recognize images of Baphomet from things ranging from heavy metal albums to religious propaganda, as the icon is often associated with Satanism. 2. There Were Female Members We only ever see depictions of the Knights Templar being men and, what with the way the world was, it would be a fair assumption to believe that the only members of the monastic order were male… but that’s not entirely true. While the Knights Templar were formed to fight battles, and the Order’s rule, set out by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, explicitly forbade women from joining to prevent temptation 1. They Still Exist Today! Despite the order of the Knights Templar having been officially disbanded in 1314, their influence and teachings can still be felt today. Of course, it’s long been thought that Knights have continued to protect the legendary treasures that were hidden, but the truth behind this has so far evaded discovery. Sea Lions Sea Lions have long been associated with friendly interactions with humans, so much so that they form a large part of Peruvian culture- having been worshipped by the people there and depicted in numerous artworks. They are highly intelligent animals, which means they can learn tricks to entertain crowds, and are quite curious so they will often swim up alongside humans and play with them in the water. They are also used by the US military to assist SCUBA diving teams look for underwater mines and, in some instances, detain divers who have accessed restricted areas until authorities can arrive. Sea lions and dolphins are used as combat marine units and sea lions especially, have excellent eyesight. Sea lions are hardy, smart, and trainable and they have the added advantage that they are amphibious and can easily hand things to their handlers. This all makes Sea Lions sound like gentle creatures, but it’s important to know that sea lions have another side to them. If they aren’t treated well or respectfully, they can become quite aggressive. This can also happen with male Sea Lions because they are very territorial during mating season. If it looks like you’re bothering one then stay away but, if not, they are one of the friendliest sea creatures you’ll ever meet. 9. Beluga Whale Beluga Whales are native to the Arctic and sub-arctic, and are uniquely adapted to the cold waters. They are white in color, don’t have a dorsal fin, and have an enlarged head, which contains an organ called a melon that is used for echolocation. Beluga’s were actually the first type of whale to be kept in captivity, with the first being shown at Barnum’s museum in New York in 1861. To this day they are still the most commonly seen animal in marine parks across North America, Europe and Asia- mainly because they are much smaller than other species of whale and easier to contain. They are also a hit with visitors because of their unusual colour and wide range of facial expressions. They are really curious about the people who visit them, and often perform in shows with trainers who they develop deep bonds with. Since 1992 it has been forbidden to capture Belugas in Canada because of concerns for the population numbers in the wild, so now most of them come from Russia. They are so popular that each one can cost as much as 100,000 dollars. Whale watching tours are a great way to see them in their natural habitat, but it’s important for the boat not to get too close to them because of the way it can interrupt their daily activities. Quite often they enjoy interacting with the boats so much that they get distracted from things like feeding, social interaction with their own species, and breeding. They get so caught up in the moment, they forget what they’re supposed to be doing!! 8. Whale Shark You might not think a shark with a five-foot-wide mouth and more than 3,000 teeth would be the friendliest of creatures, but whale sharks are the most gentle of all shark species. They pose no threat to humans at all, and are usually pretty welcoming to those who want to swim alongside them. Despite their huge mouth, their throats are only the width of a US quarter, and they only eat tiny micro-organisms. Their average speed through the water is about 3 miles per hour, so they are easy to keep up with, and in a lot of tourist areas they are used to the presence of humans in the water, and don’t really seem to be bothered. Cancun is one of the best places to swim with these giants of the ocean, where you’ll really feel small next to a 65-foot-long and 12 ton fish. There really is nothing quite like being surrounded by a few of them, and the experience draws tourists from all over the world. If you visit “Las Afueras” you’ll even have a chance to be amongst a feeding frenzy of hundreds of them, which is a spectacular feat of nature. 7. Manatees Manatees, or sea cows, are also known as gentle giants, and it’s clear to see why. They are fully aquatic and feed mainly on plant life that they sift from the water. They can grow to up to 13-feet-long, weigh about 1,300 pounds, and push their way through the water with their paddle like limbs. Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon Located in Micronesia, Truk Lagoon (also known as Chuuk Lagoon) is home to one of the world’s largest ship graveyards from WWII. In an attack known as Operation Hailstone, the Allies launched a surprise attack on one of Japan’s largest naval bases for 3 days. Over 60 Japanese ships were sunk along with 275 airplanes and many of the wrecks are perfectly intact. 7. The Baltic Sea Anomaly In 2011, the Swedish “Ocean X” diving team was looking for a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea. While they were searching, a strange object appeared on their sonar. Fun fact: The Ocean X team are treasure hunters who specialize in looking for expensive antique alcohol lost at sea! 6. Loki's Castle Loki’s Castle is a hydrothermal vent system located between Greenland and Norway at a depth of about 2,352 meters (7,717 ft). These vents bring up heat from the center of the Earth, and are home to dozens of deep sea creatures. Many of which we are just now learning about!! 5. Lost City Of Dwarka There are many lost cities in the world, and in Hindu mythology, one of the biggest and most important ones was the Lost City Of Dwarka. The city was built by Lord Krishna, and he loved it so much that he decided to live there. Modern day Dwaraka or Dwarka, was believed to be built nearby or on top of the ancient city. The first clear, historical record of the lost city was from 574 AD. 4. Mariana Trench We know more about the surface of Mars than the deep sea. And numerous divers have tried to discover what lies at the bottom. The discovery of the Mariana Trench in 1875 opened up a whole new world for us! Challenger Deep is in the southern end of the Mariana Trench and is the deepest part of the trench, estimated to be about 10,994 metres (36,070 ft). 3. Lost Continent Of Mu While Atlantis may be the most famous "lost underwater civilization", it's hardly the only one as you know by now!! One of the other famous ones is the Lost Continent of Mu. This is believed by some to have been an actual continent in the Pacific Ocean that was sunk after some terrible natural disaster. Like Atlantis, was a land made of technologically advanced people. 2. S.S Central America The S.S. Central America sank off the coast of Carolina in 1857 when it ran smack into a hurricane. While that may sound common, the cargo was not. It was full of tons and tons of gold. 130 years later, in 1987, researchers had the technology to map and explore the sea floor and that meant that finding shipwrecks got a whole lot easier!! 1. Apollo 11 Engines Arguably the most famous space shuttle in history was Apollo 11, which was the flight that took the first people to the moon. When it launched in 1969, many of its parts were scattered to the oceans after they detached from the main shuttle. This actually started a mini-race to try and find them all. Check out these animals found frozen in ice! This top 10 list of amazing animals discoveries has some ancient animals that were frozen in time for eternity! 10. The Yuka Mammoth The Yuka mammoth is one of the most well known and scientifically valuable animals that have ever been found. It was discovered in 2010 within the Siberian permafrost on the coast of the Laptev Sea in Russia. The most unusual thing about this 39,000-year-old mammoth was that it was mummified, and had the most in-tact mammoth brain ever found, with folds and blood vessels still visible. Finding specimens like this is incredibly helpful to understanding the species. Studies of the brain showed it to be very similar to modern day elephants, and also led to researchers to developing better ways of storing mammoths in the future when new ones are found. Along with the Yuka mammoth, a number of other ones have been found in the region, although not in as good condition, and have been highly sought after by researchers for a different purpose. Because of their relatively intact DNA, and their status as an intriguing extinct animal that is very similar to some that exist today, the mammoth is a great candidate for bringing a species back from extinction using cutting edge technology. It is believed that with a bit of luck and perseverance, we might once again see these giants alive and well, and maybe within just a few years! I would definitely love to see that! 9. Moose It’s rare enough to find an animal preserved in ice, but rarer still is the apparent freezing of two animals when they’re interacting with each other. Well this is what a couple of hikers found in Alaska in 2016. Beneath 8 inches of ice was the stunning sight of two moose fighting each other, clearly so engrossed in their tussle that they failed to notice the approaching frost. In the fall, males tend to be more aggressive towards each other, likely due to territorial disputes or to gain the attention of a female, and at some point these two managed to get their antlers tangled. They probably drowned in the cold water before being frozen over as temperatures fell. Soon after their discovery, the moose were removed from the ice by local enthusiasts who wanted to preserve the unusual find forever. 8. Fish As a fish living in water, ice can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s the unique property of ice floating on top of water that helps to insulate warmth and allow fish to survive falling temperatures, but they aren’t always so lucky. In 2014, a sharp cold eastern wind sent temperatures plummeting very quickly around the island of Lovund in Norway, and instantly froze parts of the ocean. Unfortunately for a large shoal of fish, thought to be attempting to escape a predator at the time, there was no chance to avoid the approaching ice, and they were frozen in place. The ice sheet was so thick that it was perfectly safe for people to walk across, and capture these amazing images of thousands of fish frozen in time. This event had a major impact on the local ecosystem, because birds were unable to find any food, so the skies were strangely silent until the ice finally thawed. 7. Yukagir Bison Siberia is one of the coldest places on earth that has been regularly inhabited for millennia. This makes it the perfect place to find frozen animals like the Yuka mammoth, and close by there was another discovery in 2011, the mummified remains of a Steppe Bison- the ancestor to the modern bison. Discovered by a tribe in the Yana-Indigirka Lowland, the bison was remarkably intact, with its brain and other organs almost perfectly preserved. This is the most complete Steppe Bison ever to be found, and has allowed researchers to extensively study its brain, heart, digestive system and blood vessels, despite it being well over 9000 years old. With no visible signs of injury, it is thought that the lack of body fat around its abdomen is a clue as to how it died. Most likely from starvation as a result of the rapidly changing environment in the area at the time. 6. Selerikan Pony In 1968, gold miners digging tunnels, about 30 feet below the surface of the Indigirka River in Siberia, found something surprising- two legs and a tail of a pony sticking through the roof of one of their tunnels. Experts were called in from the Zoological institute of St. Petersburg to help recover the full animal, which they managed to do, apart from its head. The body turned out to be of a Przewalski (prez walski) Horse, that nowadays is only found in Mongolia, and amazingly this one appeared to have died about 35,000 years ago. Analysis of the remains suggested that the horses lived relatively similar then to how they still do today. Dinosaur Death Match! You’ve got to love dinosaur bones, they teach about the animal’s behaviour and appearance, and what they ate. There have been a lot of great dinosaur skeleton finds over the years, helping us to discover new species and try to figure out what the world was like long before we came around. But this find has to be seen to be believed. 7. Atacama Alien Skeleton In 2003, a very small skeleton was found with a very long head that ended in a point and missing ribs. Rumors spread and conspiracy theorists began shouting “Alien” from the rooftops. The remains were sold to a private collector in Spain and ended up in a documentary in 2013 as potential evidence for alien life. 6. Predator Becomes Prey In the words of a Jedi Master, "there's always a bigger fish". But in this unique skeleton find, it was actually a somewhat small fish that caused the deaths of three as it tried to attack something much bigger than itself. 5. Roopkund Skeletons Ok, so the only thing more unsettling than finding one skeleton in an odd place is finding multiple skeletons in an odd place. Hundreds in fact! In 1942, the British heard a rumor that there were hundreds of Japanese soldiers who had died in Lake Roopkund in the Himalayas. 4. Skeleton Tree During a storm in Ireland, a large birch tree was knocked over. It was quite a surprise when a human skeleton was found embedded in the mass of roots. Now, that's weird enough. Researchers were called in and it turns out that under the 215 year-old tree was the skeleton of a young man between 17-20 years old. The bones were dated back to the medieval period between 1030 and 1200 AD. 3. Conehead Skeletons There is an ancient fortified settlement in Russia that dates back to around 2-3,000 BC. Also known as the “Russian Stonehenge”, it is believed to be older than Stonehenge itself! Archaeologists have tried to find out who lived there, and more recently, a skull with an elongated cone shape was found at this site. 2. A Centaur Ok, this one wasn't really a "find", but it's still worth talking about. At the Tucson International Wildlife Museum, you'll actually find a "skeleton" of a centaur. Yes, as in the creature from Greek Mythology. No, it's not an actual centaur, but it's there! 1. Vampire Skeleton One of the other beautiful things about science is that it can debunk the existence of certain mythological creatures definitively. While it's nice to believe in centaurs, human history is ripe with claims of dangerous mythological creatures living among us. Like...say...vampires? Koalas Carry STDS While they might look cute and cuddly, it’s a bad idea to get too close to a koala. You especially don’t want to pick one up because most of them are infected with Chlamydia. Up to 90 percent of the little guys are infected with the silent STD that can be easily spread to humans. Koalas can carry one of two strains of Chlamydia, C. pecorum and C. pneumonia. While C. pecorum only shows up in creatures like koalas, water buffaloes, pigs, and bandicoots, it turns out humans are quite susceptible to C. pneumonia. This nasty bacterium leads to respiratory infections. But how do people contract Chlamydia from Koalas? From their urine. If you pick up one of these plague-ridden marsupials, the koala might decide to relieve itself all over the place. Or, you could come into contact with something the koala has peed on. This infection is so prevalent, actually, that some have suggested culling the population to control the spread. 11. Hippos are Hungry-Hungry for Flesh Despite their dumpy, adorable appearance, hippos are the most aggressive and dangerous animals in Africa. It's estimated that they're responsible for more human deaths than lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and leopards combined. But that’s not the worst of it. Normally herbivores, hippo cannibalism has been documented on several occasions and has even been captured on film. Scientists say this happens when hippopotamuses become stressed due to overcrowding or when suffering nutritional deficiencies. It isn’t a healthy option, either. A massive anthrax outbreak in 2004, which killed hundreds of hippos, was probably caused by cannibalism. Hippos also have been known to munch on the corpses of impalas from time to time, and one wild report from the government of Addis Ababa claimed that some hippos were actually hunting down cattle. Hippos have long been known to attack people, killing up to 2,900 annually, and they may eat humans as well. River guide Paul Templer was working his way down Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River in 2013 when he was rushed by a bull hippo. The irate beast killed Paul’s apprentice and then tried to swallow Paul whole. He managed to get free but he suffered 40 deep wounds, some of which exposed his lungs, and one of his arms was amputated. After he recuperated, he went right back to his old job. 10. Sea Turtles Will Try to Rape You Male sea turtles can weigh up to 180 kilograms (400 pounds). During mating season, they only have one thing on their minds: the next conquest. These shelled reptiles approach females from behind, grab the shoulders with their clawed flippers, and then latch on with a claw-like tip on their tail. Next, they generally pin their mate to the ocean floor and hang on for hours, sometimes 12 or more. For turtles, that’s wine and chocolates on Valentine’s Day. However, things get a lot more dangerous (and humiliating) when the reptiles decide they want to hit on humans. In 2007, conservation geneticist Brian Bowen was collecting fish off the coast of Australia when a randy, 100-kilogram (220 pound), green turtle tried to mount him. Bowen was able to keep the creature at bay with his Hawaiian sling, fighting off three more attempts before the heartbroken beast swam away. A loggerhead turtle similarly assaulted Bruce Gernon, an Islamorada real estate agent. The turtle drove Gernon to the ocean floor. As it wrapped its flippers around his shoulders and, as Bruce put it, “probed me in the backside,” the man managed to shove a lobster into the turtle’s face. The confused reptile let Gernon go, giving the diver enough time to swim to safety. Boy, that really changes the way you think of sea turtles, doesn’t it? 9. Polar Bears are Cannibals Summer and fall are lean times for polar bears in the Arctic. In the colder months, they prey on seals sprawling along the sea ice that fringes the bears' terrain. In the summer, though, much of this icy real estate melts away and the seals take to the open seas or move north toward ice floes beyond the polar bears' reach. Left without their usual prey, the bears occasionally resort to cannibalism. This is usually bears eating other, smaller bears or cubs. Scientists are divided over whether this is a rare behavior becoming more commonplace or if it is just being better documented. Pyramid Lake, Nevada Pyramid lake is one of the most famous lakes in the world and it probably looks familiar because it is often used as a screensaver on Apple devices. But this place has a dark side to it, and there are countless mysteries associated with it since humans first settled the area. As well as sightings of ghosts, demons, and serpents, the lake was supposedly once home to a family of mermaids. One of them fell in love with a local villager, but upon her introduction to the village as his future wife, the reaction was less than welcoming. She was banished to the lake, never to return. Heartbroken as she was, she cursed the lake with the guarantee that anyone who lived there would suffer, and by all accounts that legend seems to have come true. Located about 40 miles away from Reno, it’s an ancient place that was once part of a larger lake that covered most of Northwestern Nevada. The name Pyramid Lake, was given because of the various limestone formations that extend from the water’s surface, resembling structures from a long lost civilization. Humans have lived in the area a long time, with the native Paiute tribe living on the shores until settlers began to take the land from them. The violence that ensued made this a dangerous place in the 1860’s, and only helped to further the legends of the place that had existed for centuries. The battles between the native tribes and settlers resulted in countless deaths, and the lake is renowned for a larger than usual number of fisherman fatalities. Plus, the mysterious disappearance of swimmers and scuba divers in the area, who are never to be found again. It seems fitting that such a beautiful place is also potentially such a dangerous one. Just be careful if you ever visit it, because the mermaid’s curse seems to be in full effect to this day. 7. Laguna Colorada, Chile While Laguna Colorada is arguably one of the most stunning places you can visit in the world, at the same time it’s unarguably a creepy and eerie place that makes everyone who’s ever been there feel a little... different. You can’t help but compare it’s deep burgundy color to the color of blood. Located in southwest Bolivia on the border with Chile, this blood red lake is caused by red sediments and algae in the water. It’s all covered in natural formations of salts that are used to make washing detergents, and home to huge numbers of Andean flamingos, the rarest species of flamingo in the world. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, helping the local villages to thrive. It is also said that it may have inspired Salvador Dali himself as it is now also known as Dali Valley. It is quite a surrealist landscape. By all accounts it’s a life changing sight. If you ever visit, I dare you to go for a swim! 6. Boiling Lake, Dominica Within the lush forests of Dominica, about a 3 hour hike from the nearby village of Laudat, is one of the most dangerous lakes in the world. Known as the Boiling Lake, it’s about 200 feet across, which makes it the second largest boiling lake in the world. It was first noted in the expedition diary of two English explorers in 1870, which led to a scientific mission to take measurements. How hot was it? While they found the outer water to range in temperature between 180 to 197 degrees Fahrenheit, it proved to be utterly impossible to measure the temperature of the areas where the lake was actively boiling. At the time the lake was measured to be about 195 feet deep, but over the years this has changed drastically. In 1988 the lake stopped boiling altogether, although it has since returned to the same state as when it was first discovered. Today the depth is unknown, and the temperatures are equally difficult to measure. It’s thought to be a flooded fumarole, which is a crack that allows gases to escape from molten lava that lies below. As the water that is collected in the basin from rainfall seeps down, it makes contact with the lava and boils. This whole process obviously makes it treacherous to any living thing that enters the water, something that is made more likely by the extremely steep and slippery slopes that surround it. For this reason, numerous people and animals have disappeared in the area, never to be seen again. Çatalhöyük, Turkey Built in what was once Mesopotamia, the city of Çatalhöyük, which now resides in Turkey, is easily one of the biggest mysteries of the ancient world. I mean reaaaallly ancient, it reached its heyday around 7000 BC!! This place makes ancient Rome look modern!! These tightly clustered mudbrick houses kind of look like honeycombs, don’t you think? 8. Palenque, Mexico Mexico is a land of many mysteries and lost people and cities. But easily the biggest civilization, with the biggest mystery surrounding them, are the Mayans. This tribe came from an unknown area, arrived in Mexico, and set up an empire that lasted over 3000 years. Then they were gone. To this day, many still study the Mayans in order to find out more about them, and especially what happened to them. 7. Cahokia, United States This one might come as a surprise. In the United States, there is an old city that used to be the biggest city in North America at one point in time. This was the city of Cahokia, a pre-Columbian Native American City. It was founded around the year 600 and lasted until the 14th century. You can still go there today, it's across from St. Louis on the other side of the Mississippi river. 6. Derinkuyu, Turkey Turkey is home to another ancient, fascinating and mysterious place: Derinkuyu. The concept of making underground cities may seem like something from fantasy television shows, or Fraggle Rock, but many cultures have made very grand underground cities. 5. Yonaguni Monument, Japan Off of the coast of Japan, there is a place called Yonaguni Island which was famous for hammerhead sharks. Now, people are more intrigued by some unnerving formations in the water that were found by a diver in 1987. The Yonaguni Monument is a series of rock formations that has the scientific world split as to whether this is a natural design, or something made by humans. And it's a debate that continues on to this day. 4. Machu Picchu, Peru Machu Picchu is arguably one of the most interesting and revealing places in the world. Why? Because it's through this city that we got to take a look inside the Incan Empire. This civilization ruled a lot of South America for quite some time, and their territory included Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and more. And yet, for a while, we didn't know that much about them, until we found Machu Picchu. 3. Thonis, Egypt If you're big into history, then you knew that it was only a matter of time before Egypt showed up on my list. And as you know, it is home to many ruins and mysteries, and the main topic of several videos on this channel!! Be sure to check them out when you finish this video!! 2. Great Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Sticking with Africa, let's head to Zimbabwe, which holds one of the biggest mysteries of the continent. It's called... Great Zimbabwe. Yeah, doesn't really sound mysterious, does it? But don't let that fool you, there's more to this than you might think. 1. Pompeii, Italy There are many scary stories in history, but the story of Pompeii is one that we just can’t get over. This is the city that was built in the fertile valley near a volcano, Mt. Vesuvius. When it erupted, it caught people by surprise and buried the city in soot and ash and left it covered and perfectly preserved for hundreds of years. Now much of it has been uncovered and it is a sad historical marvel and many people were frozen in time forever. HANAKAPIAI BEACH, HAWAII On the Hawaiian island of Kauai, there’s a two-mile-long hiking trail that will lead you past a variety of scenic natural features, including waterfalls, caves, rivers, and beautiful wildlife. Known as one of the most gorgeous trails in all of Hawaii, Kalalau Trail climbs steadily uphill for the first half-mile, reaching an elevation of 400 feet at the top, from which point hikers are offered a stunning view of the Napali Coast. 7. GANSBAAI, SOUTH AFRICA Nicknamed the “Great White Shark Capital of the World,” little further explanation is needed for why South Africa’s Gansbaai Beach is dangerous. A few miles off the coast, between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, there’s a small channel of water called Shark Alley. It’s home to a colony of around 60,000 fur seals, which is very, very attractive to swarms of great white sharks. 6. NORTHERN TERRITORY AND QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA Some of the deadliest beaches in the world are located in Australia, mainly because of their extremely dangerous marine life that lives off the coast. Located in Northern Queensland, places like Cape Tribulation and Fraser Island are home to scary species such as box jellyfish, crocodiles, and venomous snakes. 5. NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA Volusia County, Florida is home to a record number of unprovoked shark attacks that have occurred since 1882 - 290, to be exact. That’s more than the whole of South Africa, including the infamous Gansbaai Beach and its nearby Shark Alley. 4. CHOWPATTY BEACH, MUMBAI, INDIA Chowpatty Beach is one of the most polluted in the entire world, meaning it would be practical lunacy to go swimming here. Waste and disposal from the surrounding city of Mumbai are regularly dumped into the water, and debris and scraps from salvaged ships are scattered along the beach. 3. COPACABANA BEACH, BRAZIL So far I’ve told you about beaches that are dangerous because of undertows, wildlife, and pollution. This next beach contains none of the above. Copacabana Beach, located in Rio de Janeiro, has only had six shark attacks since 1931. It’s also well-kept and safe to swim in, assuming you follow common sense guidelines. 2. VIRGINIA BEACH, USA Due to its proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland, Virginia Beach is a place people go mainly out of convenience - indeed, it’s not exactly known for being popular or beautiful. It also doesn’t rank very high when it comes to safety and is one of the most dangerous beaches in the United States. 1. KILAUEA, HAWAII Earlier, I told you about Hanakapiai Beach, which is beautiful, but known for its deadly riptides - and it’s not the only one of Hawaii’s coastlines where visitors should heed caution. There’s a beautiful, black-sand beach on the “big island” at Kilauea, and it’s right next to one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Since 1983, the volcano, known as Mount Kilauea, has been continuously spewing lava into the ocean. Blood Falls Because of its remote location and inhospitable environment, there’s a lot still to be discovered in Antarctica. One feature that’s been a mystery ever since they were found are the blood falls in the Mcmurdo Dry Valley. Pouring from the Taylor Glacier, the water is a deep red colour, and has an average temperature of only 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit- well below the freezing point of 32! 9 Clicking in Stockholm Harbour In 1981, a Russian submarine, armed with a nuclear warhead, entered Swedish waters near a naval base. At the time it was blamed on an accidental navigation error, but since then, the Swedes have kept a careful listen out for any more intrusions into their territory. 13 years later, in 1994, acoustic devices picked up the tell tale sign of a vessel, with a series of metallic clicking noises being heard near Stockholm harbour. 8. The City of Troy The ancient city of Troy was the focus of Homer’s “Illiad”, where it lay under siege for more than 10 years before finally succumbing to a Greek army being led by King Agamemnon. Troy is famous for the beautiful Helen of Troy, Achilles, and the horse. Many stories have been told of the place, but the site of the true ancient city of Troy is located to the northwest of Turkey. 7. Mass Whale Graveyard In 2011, during a road widening project in the Atacama Desert of Chile, builders stumbled across a mass graveyard, but it wasn’t what you might expect. It was full of the bones of whales, strange walrus-faced dolphins and sloths all lying side by side. The fossils were found to be about 6 to 9 million years old, and it became a mystery as to why so many animals would die in one place together, and how it would happen in a place that was 130 feet above sea level. 6. The Bloop In 1997 a loud, ultra-low frequency sound, which became known as the “Bloop” was heard on hydrophones across the Pacific. It was so loud, in fact, that it was picked up by listening devices over 3,000 miles apart. The problem was, no-one had any idea what could make such a noise, and for the next decade there was much debate about its cause. 5. The Easter Island Statues Easter Island is one of the remotest inhabited islands in the world, more than 1,600 miles away from the nearest town. Ever since the first explorers visited the place, it has stood out for one main reason- the 887 Moai, giant statues of heads that are placed around the coast. 4. The Mary Celeste For more than 100 years the story of the Mary Celeste has baffled people. After the ship failed to arrive at port, search parties went to find it, and discovered it completely empty, with no sign of a struggle. But why would a crew abandon a seemingly fine ship, what could possibly convince them to do this? 3. The Wandering Rocks of Death Valley Racetrack Playa, a desert lake bed that lies in the mountains above Death Valley, has been the site of an extraordinary phenomenon- rocks that seemingly move by themselves. For decades, no-one has been able to explain how the rocks traverse the surface, leaving a trail in their wake. Some suggested it was caused by wind or rain, or perhaps even people moving them. It was only in December of 2013, though, that the truth came to light. 2. Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart was a aviation pioneer, and became the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. She would go on to attempt a number of different challenges, but on July 2nd, 1937, she went missing, without a trace, in the Pacific while flying from Papua New Guinea to Howland Island as part of an attempt to fly around the world. 1. The Bermuda Triangle The Bermuda Triangle is undoubtedly one of the biggest mysteries ever, but in recent years the superstition surrounding the region has been debunked. It’s the part of the Atlantic Ocean between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico- and supposedly has been the site of many plane and ship disappearances. New Swabia One of the most famous conspiracy theories surrounding Antarctica deals with the Nazis. During the Second World War, Adolf you-know-who chartered many expeditions to Antarctica claiming that it was for scientific research. Naturally, by having such a long track record of being a stand-up citizen of the earth, no one believed him. 5. Underground Mountains In 1958 the Soviets were off on a mapping expedition to study Antarctica. In order to test the thickness of the ice, they would detonate explosives every 100 miles. Suddenly, the scientists found themselves standing on top of a very thin sheet of ice. As they continued to inspect the ice below them they soon realized they were standing above a subglacial mountain range. 4. Hidden Lakes Possibly the most interesting discovery surrounding Antarctica is the world hidden beneath the ice. Two and a half miles below the surface of Antarctica lies a subglacial lake named Lake Vostok approximately the size of Lake Superior! 3. The 14-Mile Structure What the heck is this? The 14 mile by 4.5-mile area first gained attention in 2006 when someone exploring using Google Earth pointed out the strange nature and size of the structure. It began to gain an incredible amount of attention on the internet over the following months. 2. Operation Highjump In the past 100 years, the U.S military has made numerous expeditions to Antarctica for "ice training missions". The objective of these missions was to test the performance of the U.S Military in sub-zero temperatures. One of the goals of these missions was to establish a working military base on the ice. 1.
