E46 Vanos Rebuild What Not To Do #m54rebuild 6

01:43
I began my rebuild when I did a compression test and noticed I had poor compression in cylinders 2-6 (about 142 psi, the bottom of the service limit). Cylinder 1 head 160 psi. A leakdown test showed leakage into each adjacent cylinder. Of course my engine also had the oil consumption problem (1 quart every 1000 miles) that every M54 engine has, which is caused by the oil rings which wear down prematurely (the M52TU used different oil rings which did not have this problem). There was also coolant loss, which I didn't measure precisely. To see all the videos in the #m54rebuild series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqJG4ZyPIF6OflXtgLWJOFdsiuc-UrZJX To view all the specs and torques for BMW M54/M52TU engines: https://goo.gl/jLvcgR I made this video for a specific subscriber when I noticed I could solve his problem during my engine rebuild. So, 99 times out of 100 they are caused by a vacuum leak and on the M54/M52 engine there are a few common causes of vacuum leaks. So common that I'd say 95% of cases will be covered by what I go over in this video. I also talk about what a vacuum leak is, how a MAF sensor works, and so on. One thing I don't cover in this video is how to test your oxygen sensors to see if they are working. I will do that in a future video. BMW 330i 325i E46 Oil Filter Housing Gasket Change

27:05
Update on Mar 13, 2015: I've been made aware that I didn't have to drain all the oil out of my engine during this video. I could have just slowly opened the oil filter cap to let air in and the oil would have drained back into the oil pan. Makes sense to me because the oil filter housing attaches about midway up the engine. So give that a try when you do this job--makes for one less thing to do! ----------------------------------- Step by step on how to change the oil filter housing gasket on a 2002 BMW 330i E46 Sedan. I cover everything in great detail and leave nothing out. This video applies to all E46 cars from 1998-2006. The oil filter housing gasket BMW part number is: 11421719855 You can find the fan removal tools here: http://amzn.to/2j4dHMW

BMW 330i 325i E46 DISA Valve Operation Test

04:24
How to completely test your DISA valve, also called the Intake Manifold Resonance Valve, for functionality before you decide to repair it. You will find this valve on an M54 engine in a BMW E46 3 series, an E39 5 series, or an E53 X5 3.0i. If you want to go one step further than the whole finger over the hole test, I'll show you how to confirm the complete electrical functionality of the unit. This video will also teach you how the valve operates. DISA is an acronym for "DIfferenzierte SAuganlage" or differentiated intake. It changes the length of the passage the air travels through inside the intake manifold. At low engine speeds you want the air to travel through a longer tube to produce torque most efficiently, and at high engine speeds you want that tube to be short. This is why your BMW engine is so torquey compared to, say, a Honda engine, which doesn't start to pick up until you rev it really high.

How To Recharge an A/C System Professionally

18:04
Mountain 8205 R-134a Manifold Gauge Set: https://amzn.to/2LSDhXu A/C refrigerant can tap: https://amzn.to/2OITwEg U/V flashlight & UV blocking safety glasses (protect your eyes!): https://amzn.to/2nbWKnb If your A/C isn't blowing as cold as it used you, some of your refrigerant has probably leaked out due to a leaky schrader valve in one of the service ports. In this video I will show you how to inject ultraviolet dye into the system to check for leaks, as well as how to use a manifold gauge set and vacuum pump to refill your system with refrigerant. If there is still refrigerant in your system, you will need to have it evacuated by a shop with a refrigerant recovery machine before you can perform any repairs such as replacing schrader valves or o-rings or any other component. You can buy UV dye and a UV flash light at any automotive parts store. Remember to use UV protection when using the flash light. When recharging your system, you should put in the amount of refrigerant that is recommended by the vehicle's manufacturer. There is usually a sticker under the hood telling you how much you need to put in. In the case where you don't have a sticker, you can go by the pressures displayed on your gauge set. The following chart should help you to figure out the proper pressures for your vehicle: R134a Pressure-Temperature Chart Ambient Humidity Low-side High-Side Temp PSI PSI 70 Low 25 to 30 140 to 190 High 28 to 35 165 to 220 80 Low 26 to 33 150 to 200 High 30 to 36 190 to 260 90 Low 31 to 37 170 to 220 High 37 to 45 210 to 290 100 Low 35 to 44 195 to 245 High 38 to 48 230 to 320 110 Low 40 to 50 235 to 285 High 42 to 52 260 to 350

Tool Review: 3/8" M12 Milwaukee Ratchet (and 10k subs thanks!)

Guys, I had the wrong numbers in my head when I made this video. Apparently this wrench has 250RPM and 35 lb-ft of torque. The 1/4" version has 30 lb-ft. My mistake. It's still twice as fast as everything else though. The ACDelco wrench I was talking about was the ARW1201 and it has 160RPM and 57 lb-ft of torque. Trust me, speed is everything when it comes to using power tools. DIY Smoke Machine For Vacuum or EVAP Leaks E46 P0171 P0174

15:17
In this video I show you how I constructed my own DIY Smoke Machine out of a paint can, a propane regulator, tiki torch wicks, and some Kanthal wire. This is the same smoke tester that you can buy on eBay for $100. I think I put about $30 into it. I then show you how to perform a smoke test and what a couple different vacuum leaks would look like on an E46 BMW. Propane Regulator: http://goo.gl/r7MziA Air Blow Gun: http://goo.gl/qTqt7f Kanthal Wire: https://amzn.to/2ncmMGQ Tiki Torch Wicks: https://goo.gl/YXuKJB Paint can: hardware store Vacuum line: hardware or auto parts store Fittings: harbor freight or hardware store This video is for entertainment purposes only. 50sKid assumes no liability for any repairs or modifications performed by the viewer as a result of the information contained in this video.

BMW E46 Replace Valve Stem Seals (head in car) #m54rebuild 10

15:53
I began my rebuild when I did a compression test and noticed I had poor compression in cylinders 2-6 (about 142 psi, the bottom of the service limit). Cylinder 1 head 160 psi. A leakdown test showed leakage into each adjacent cylinder. Of course my engine also had the oil consumption problem (1 quart every 1000 miles) that every M54 engine has, which is caused by the oil rings which wear down prematurely (the M52TU used different oil rings which did not have this problem). There was also coolant loss, which I didn't measure precisely. To see all the videos in the #m54rebuild series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqJG4ZyPIF6OflXtgLWJOFdsiuc-UrZJX To view all the specs and torques for BMW M54/M52TU engines: https://goo.gl/jLvcgR The remover tool from Lisle is 36050 and it's available here: http://amzn.to/2hUTqfH You can get valve stem seal pliers here: http://amzn.to/2h49tGu All you need to make my installation tool (which can also be used as a remover, btw) is some 1/4" thick steel stock about 1" wide by maybe 2 ft long (just in case you make a mistake cutting it). You also need some basic metal working tools, such as a drill and drill bits, a cut off wheel, maybe some files to smooth down the burrs. Nothing major. You can find the Milwaukee 2457-21 cordless ratchet that I used in my amazon store: http://astore.amazon.com/50skid-20?node=1&page=3 This video is for entertainment purposes only. 50sKid assumes no liability for any repairs or modifications performed by the viewer as a result of the information contained in this video.
