We can also say that SQL tables are kind of data structure which are used by database for efficient storage of data. To create a table in our database we use SQL CREATE TABLE command. SQL CREATE TABLE is a type of DATA DEFINITION LANGUAGE also known as DDL. To Create a table in your schema you will require CREATE TABLE system privilege. In our future videos we will see what are system and object privileges and how to grant them to a user. Today for this video we will be using Sample schema HR which already has all the necessary privileges. Ohk Let's see the syntax. CREATE TABLE table name ( column name1 Data-Type(size), column name2 Data-Type(size), ..... ); CREATE TABLE is an oracle reserved word or say an Oracle key word whereas There are 3 different ways of creating a table in Oracle database. Creating a table using Command Line Interface (CLI) in Oracle database For demonstrating how to create table in oracle database using CLI, I'll be using Command prompt. Thats how we create table using command prompt. you can check your table structure by DESCRIBE command for that just write DESC and your table name. Like this Another way of creating a table is by using Graphic user interface (GUI) in Oracle database To demonstrate how to create table using GUI we will use SQL developer. Lets open our SQL developer I am connected to HR schema if you do not know how to create a connection to database using SQL developer please watch my oracle database tutorial 4 that explains database connectivity using SQL developer and command prompt. Link for this video is in the description below. So lets create a table. Creating a table using SQL developer is very easy we do not have to fire any query here. Let's start First of all right click on your connection in which you want to create a table and choose schema browser. This will open a separate schema browser pane or you can expend your connection by clicking this + sign and then right click on table and choose New Table. However I prefer working with schema browser so let's skip to schema browser pane here from the first drop-down list you can choose connection name and in the second drop down list you can choose what database objects you want to work with we want to create a table thus I'll choose table and then click this arrow here and choose option for new table Ok we have created a table wizard first of all give a unique name to your table and add some column as well. For this, click the green plus button. Now we already have a column so give it some name. Also choose a datatype from the list and specify any size you can check this not null column if in case you want to make this a mandatory column you can also specify default value and constraint If you want to make this column a primary key you can click here In my future video i'll show you what are these constraints and different ways of applying them on a column in a table. for this video we will concentrate on create table only so when you are done with all your columns click ok Thats your table You can double click on your table here and can see its structure. Thats it

Foreign key represent a link or say a relationship between columns of tables. Similar to primary key constraint Foreign Key constraint is also of two types. Simple Foreign key constraint and Composite Foreign key constraint. Constraint which involves only one column in foreign key in child table and one column in reference key in parent table is called Simple Foreign Key. While the constraint which involves more than one column in foreign key in child table and more than one column in reference key in the parent table is called Composite Foreign Key.

I'm always looking for new video ideas. Let me know what video you'd like for me to create. --- Transcript Time - 00:00 Hi, this is Chad (Shod) with luv2code.com. Welcome back to another tutorial on Java and JDBC. In this video we will learn how to use Prepared Statements. We'll first define Prepared Statements. Next we'll learn how to create Prepared Statements. Then we'll set Parameter Values, execute a Prepared Statement, and finally reuse a Prepared Statement. Time - 00:25 What exactly is a Prepared Statement? A Prepared Statement is simply a precompiled SQL statement. Prepared Statements provide the following benefits. They make it easier to set SQL parameters. They prevent against SQL dependency injection attacks, and they also may improve application performance since the SQL statement is precompiled. Time - 00:50 For this tutorial we'll use the following table, employees. This table already has some sample data in it for testing. I have a SQL script that creates the table and also adds a sample data. You can download it from a link below. Inside of the download there's a file called sql/table-setup.sql. You can run this in your SQL tool to create the table and set up the sample data. Instead of hardcoding your SQL values in your statement, you can make use of parameter placeholders. You will use a question mark for the placeholder symbol. As you can see in this example, we replaced the hardcoded values with question mark placeholders. Time - 01:29 Now let's look at adding Java code. You'll create a Prepared Statement by calling the constructor and passing it into SQL. Then when you're ready to execute the statement, you'll set the Parameter Values. The Parameter Values are set based on their data type and position. The parameter positions are 1 based, starting left going to right. Here we set the Parameter Value for salary and department. Then we execute the query by calling executeQuery. That's it. It'll return a result set, and we can process that result set in its normal fashion. Notice there's no need to provide the SQL since it was already provided earlier when we created the statement. Time - 02:08 Now let's switch over to clips and see this in action. I have a simple driver program in place. Let's walk through the actual code. First we get a connection to the database. Then I make use of that Prepared Statement. Then from there I set the parameters. I set the first parameter for the salary of 80,000; the second parameter for the department of Legal. Then I'll execute the statement. This will give me a result set. Then I have a helper method that will display the result set. Now let's run this application to see the output. As you can see, this gave us the output for 3 employees, and they all meet the parameters. The salary is greater than 80,000; and they work in the Legal department. Time - 03:02 Another advantage of Prepared Statements is that you can reuse the statement. If you need to run the same query again but with different Parameter Values, then all you have to do is set the new Parameter Values and execute the statement. Here what I'll do is I will add in a new section of code for our application to reuse the values from before. I'll just move down here, drop in another little snippet. We have this reuse statement. We're going to reuse our Prepared Statement. This time we're simply going to set the salary to 25,000 and set the department to HR. We set those parameters accordingly in our code. Then we go through and we execute the query. Time - 03:41 Then we go and we display the result set. Let me save this one a bit, pull my window up, and run it one more time. Now I'll see some new output. Here's the reuse section. Note we have 4 employees here. Their salary is greater than 25,000; and they work for the HR department. [snip] ... See Transcripts tab

This means we no longer have to use multiple statements for performing Insert, Update and Delete. With merge statement we require 2 tables 1. Source Table - Contains the changes that needs to be applied to the target table 2. Target Table - The table that require changes (Inserts, Updates and Deletes) The merge statement joins the target table to the source table by using a common column in both the tables. Based on how the rows match up as a result of the join, we can then perform insert, update, and delete on the target table. Merge statement syntax MERGE [TARGET] AS T USING [SOURCE] AS S ON [JOIN_CONDITIONS] WHEN MATCHED THEN [UPDATE STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN [INSERT STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN [DELETE STATEMENT] Example 1 : In the example below, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE are all performed in one statement 1. When matching rows are found, StudentTarget table is UPDATED (i.e WHEN MATCHED) 2. When the rows are present in StudentSource table but not in StudentTarget table those rows are INSERTED into StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET) 3. When the rows are present in StudentTarget table but not in StudentSource table those rows are DELETED from StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE) Create table StudentSource ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Create table StudentTarget ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME) WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN DELETE; Please Note : Merge statement should end with a semicolon, otherwise you would get an error stating - A MERGE statement must be terminated by a semi-colon (;) In real time we mostly perform INSERTS and UPDATES. The rows that are present in target table but not in source table are usually not deleted from the target table. Example 2 : In the example below, only INSERT and UPDATE is performed. We are not deleting the rows that are present in the target table but not in the source table. Truncate table StudentSource Truncate table StudentTarget GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME);

SQL Tutorial 4: Use ALTER , UPDATE, DELETE, and DROP statements

07:09
How do you ALTER, UPDATE, DELETE, DROP table in a database? A standard SQL scripts are applicable to all database vendors such as Informix, SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL when employing this command including DB2. The video explains how to ALTER table. Alter command is used when you add or DROP column/s in a table. Make sure you execute REORG TABLE after the alteration. When changes are required to a row data, execute the UPDATE SET command. WHERE clause must be included to isolate records that fall on the criterion. Failure to do so will update the entire column of that table if done carelessly. WHERE clause is also used when executing a DELETE sql script. If you fail to include WHERE clause, the entire rows in the table will be deleted. Execute with caution when working with DROP command. On most cases, the changes are irreversible when you are done executing this command. You may DROP column, table, views, stored procedure, user defined functions, database or simply combined it with ALTER command.

In case you miss the SQL functions intro video you can find the link in the description below. First let's see what these functions are. Upper (): This function takes a parameter converts it into uppercase and returns the new string. Initcap (): this function also takes parameter and converts the initial letter of or parameter into uppercase and returns the new string. Lower (): This function takes a parameter converts it into lowercase and returns the new string. Ok let's do some practical For this practical we will be using 2 tables First is dual table Which is a dummy table provided by oracle? And I have created another table again by the name of example. This will be our second table. Let's start with SQL function upper ( ); SELECT upper('hello world') FROM dual; As you can see I have used "hello world" completely in lowercase as parameter to SQL upper function. Execute it. Here, our result has given us a completely new hello world string which is in uppercase. Similarly you can also use SQL upper function to perform other DML Let's try This time we will work on our second table EXAMPLE; insert into example values (upper('manish')); first parentheses for values and second for SQL function upper. Let's check the result. As you can see here inserted value is in upper case. Lets compare it with simple insert query Insert into example values ('manish'); Execute it, i think now it's clear that when we perform simple insert DML the inserted value will be the same you provide. Similarly let's try SQL function initcap(); SELECT initcap('hello world') FROM dual; As you see here in result the initial letters of string hello world are in uppercase. Let's do the insert query insert into example values (initcap('hello world')); initial letters of string also are in uppercase. Let's try SQL function lower(); This time we have to write our hello world in all caps. SELECT lower('HELLO WORLD') FROM dual; Execute String totally in lower case. Similarly you can user SQL function lower in other DML like insert and all.

SQL Script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( ID int, FirstName nvarchar(50), LastName nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), Salary int ) GO Insert into Employees values (1, 'Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values (1, 'Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values (1, 'Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values (2, 'Mary', 'Lambeth', 'Female', 30000) Insert into Employees values (2, 'Mary', 'Lambeth', 'Female', 30000) Insert into Employees values (3, 'Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values (3, 'Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values (3, 'Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) The delete query should delete all duplicate rows except one. Here is the SQL query that does the job. PARTITION BY divides the query result set into partitions. WITH EmployeesCTE AS ( SELECT *, ROW_NUMBER()OVER(PARTITION BY ID ORDER BY ID) AS RowNumber FROM Employees ) DELETE FROM EmployeesCTE WHERE RowNumber ] 1

Part 2 SQL query to get organization hierarchy

Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/05/part-2-sql-query-to-get-organization.html To get the best out of this video, the following concepts need to be understood first. These are already discussed in SQL Server Tutorial. 1. Self-Join - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnYSN_7qwgg 2. CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXB5b-7HJHk 3. Recursive CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGoV0wTMCg0 Here is the problem definition: 1. Employees table contains the following columns a) EmployeeId, b) EmployeeName c) ManagerId 2. If an EmployeeId is passed, the query should list down the entire organization hierarchy i.e who is the manager of the EmployeeId passed and who is managers manager and so on till full hierarchy is listed. For example, Scenario 1: If we pass David's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from David. Scenario 2: If we pass Lara's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from Lara. We will be Employees table for this demo. SQL to create and populate Employees table with test data Create table Employees ( EmployeeID int primary key identity, EmployeeName nvarchar(50), ManagerID int foreign key references Employees(EmployeeID) ) GO Insert into Employees values ('John', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Tom', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Lara', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Simon', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('David', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Stacy', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Sam', NULL) GO Update Employees Set ManagerID = 8 Where EmployeeName IN ('Mark', 'Steve', 'Lara') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 2 Where EmployeeName IN ('Stacy', 'Simon') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 3 Where EmployeeName IN ('Tom') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 5 Where EmployeeName IN ('John', 'Sam') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 4 Where EmployeeName IN ('David') GO Here is the SQL that does the job Declare @ID int ; Set @ID = 7; WITH EmployeeCTE AS ( Select EmployeeId, EmployeeName, ManagerID From Employees Where EmployeeId = @ID UNION ALL Select Employees.EmployeeId , Employees.EmployeeName, Employees.ManagerID From Employees JOIN EmployeeCTE ON Employees.EmployeeId = EmployeeCTE.ManagerID ) Select E1.EmployeeName, ISNULL(E2.EmployeeName, 'No Boss') as ManagerName From EmployeeCTE E1 LEFT Join EmployeeCTE E2 ON E1.ManagerID = E2.EmployeeId

There are several ways of finding the nth highest salary. By the end of this video, we will be able to answer all the following questions as well. How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a Sub-Query How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a CTE How to find the 2nd, 3rd or 15th highest salary Let's use the following Employees table for this demo Use the following script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( ID int primary key identity, FirstName nvarchar(50), LastName nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), Salary int ) GO Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', 'Pound', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Philip', 'Hastings', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Mary', 'Lambeth', 'Female', 30000) Insert into Employees values ('Valarie', 'Vikings', 'Female', 35000) Insert into Employees values ('John', 'Stanmore', 'Male', 80000) GO To find the highest salary it is straight forward. We can simply use the Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees To get the second highest salary use a sub query along with Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees where Salary [ (Select Max(Salary) from Employees) To find nth highest salary using Sub-Query SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM ( SELECT DISTINCT TOP N SALARY FROM EMPLOYEES ORDER BY SALARY DESC ) RESULT ORDER BY SALARY To find nth highest salary using CTE WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS DENSERANK FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE DENSERANK = N To find 2nd highest salary we can use any of the above queries. Simple replace N with 2. Similarly, to find 3rd highest salary, simple replace N with 3. Please Note: On many of the websites, you may have seen that, the following query can be used to get the nth highest salary. The below query will only work if there are no duplicates. WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS ROWNUMBER FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE ROWNUMBER = 3

Part 12 Can we join two tables without primary foreign key relation

10:38
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/09/part-12-can-we-join-two-tables-without.html Can we join two tables without primary foreign key relation Yes, we can join two tables without primary foreign key relation as long as the column values involved in the join can be converted to one type. ID column in Departments table is not the primary Key and DepartmentId column in Employees table is not the foreign key. But we can still join these tables using ID column from Departments table and DepartmentId column from Employees table, as both the columns involved in the join have same data type i.e int. Select Employees.Name as EmployeeName, Departments.Name as DepartmentName from Employees join Departments on Departments.ID = Employees.DepartmentId The obious next question is, if primary foreign key relation is not mandatory for 2 tables to be joined then what is the use of these keys? Primary key enforces uniqueness of values over one or more columns. Since ID is not a primary key in Departments table, 2 or more departments may end up having same ID value, which makes it impossible to distinguish between them based on the ID column value. Foreign key enforces referential integrity. Without foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, it is possible to insert a row into Employees table with a value for DepartmentId column that does not exist in Departments table. The following insert statement, successfully inserts a new Employee into Employees table whose DepartmentId is 100. But we don't have a department with ID = 100 in Departments table. This means this employee row is an orphan row, and the referential integrity is lost as result Insert into Employees values (8, 'Mary', 'Female', 80000, 100) If we have had a foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, the following insert statement would have failed with the following error. Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint. The conflict occurred in database "Sample", table "dbo.Departments", column 'ID'.

Using Oracle to read data from SQL Server

10:47
Hi everyone, Andy from Easysoft Limited here, what I want to show you today is how to get data from SQL Server into Oracle. Now for this we will be accessing SQL Server 2014 from Oracle 12 and getting data across. This could be quite easily be any SQL Server version from 2008 and any Oracle version from 11.2, the configuration and process is the same. We can obviously get access to data on SQL Server prior to 2008 and Oracle prior to version 11.2 but it will need a different configuration to what I am going to show you today The plan is also to add more data to the SQL Server table and show this new data back in Oracle. To start off you'll need access to ensure that you have access to your SQL Server and Oracle databases. You'll also need the Easysoft SQL Server ODBC Driver available from www.easysoft.com; just download it, install it and request the free 14 day trial licence. Before we start we need to make some changes to the standard Easysoft config files. cat /etc/odbc.ini Here I have changed Mars Connection to Yes. It must be set to "Yes" if you are connecting to SQL Server 2005 or newer. Easysoft supports all SQL data types from the version of SQL Server from version 7. Oracle supports data types that are common to most ODBC Drivers, but not some of the SQL Server ones. If you intend to access VARCHAR(MAX) for example, then there are some additional settings that need to be set up. Now as I would like to show you VARCHAR(MAX) data moving from SQL Server to Oracle, I have made the relevant change. As you can see, VarMaxAsLong says "Yes" We now need to create a link from Oracles Database Gateway (DG4ODBC) to the ODBC datasource that we already have, this is done in an init(sid) oracle file; let's have a look at our file. cat $ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin/initsqlsrv.ora Please note that HS_NLS_NCHAR must be set to UCS2 Oracle assume that most database vendors use UTF-8 for wide characters, however Easysoft, like almost all ODBC Driver vendors (including Oracles own ODBC Driver) uses UCS2 for wide characters. So that's the link between DG4ODBC and the datasource setup correctly. Next we need to set up the Listener entry The Oracle Listener waits for incoming requests from the Oracle database. For the Oracle Listener to listen for requests, information about DG4ODBC must be added to the Oracle Listener configuration file, listener.ora cat $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora The PROGRAM=dg4odbc tells the Listener that we are wanting to use the Oracle database gateway to communicate with ODBC. The ENVS=LD_LIBRARY_PATH tells Oracle what library to load Now that's all set up and OK we need to tell Oracle which server to attach the listener entry to. This is done in tnsnames.ora, and he is the file that we ensured was set up earlier. cat $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora The Oracle Listener now needs to be restarted. lsnrctl stop lsnrctl start OK, that's now started the Listener up again. So we have ensured that all the configuration files are set up correctly. The Listener and tnsnames.ora both set up OK. The final step is to create a link from the Oracle database to the "tnsnames.ora" entry. CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK ODBC CONNECT TO "test" IDENTIFIED BY "test" USING 'sqlsrv_ptr'; Right, that's all done. Let's access the data in SQL Server now. select * from [email protected]; Where 'demo' is the name of the SQL Server table and 'odbc' is the public database link name. OK, there we have the data. So to recap, I'm in Oracle and we have managed to read the data from SQL Server. Let's just add an additional row in that SQL Server table and retrieve the new data in Oracle. quit; /usr/local/easysoft/unixODBC/bin/isql.sh -v sqlsrv insert into demo values (2,'Easysoft') select * from demo select * from [email protected]; And there is the new data. Easysoft Limited can help you with your data access ... for our full range of ODBC and JDBC Drivers, Bridges and Gateways visit easysoft.com Be sure to let us know if you have any comments or questions. Until next time, thanks again and we'll see you again soon.
