This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. The research you conduct here is used to gain insight into your users and their needs to discover if what you are designing or intending to design is relevant and suitable for them. Normally consists of: - Surveys (quantitative data) - Interviews (qualitative data) - Questionnaires (qualitative data) 2 - Usability Testing This type of research is used to assess whether what we are creating provides an enjoyable and easy to use experience for our users. Usability tests are often conducted on what we are currently designing or building, but they can also be used to test the usability of something that already exists - like an existing website. Normally consists of: - Low fi wireframes and prototypes (sketches, static visuals) - High fi wireframes and prototypes (task analysis) - Live website testing (task analysis) - Accessibility testing 3 - ROI Research This type of research is used to demonstrate the ROI (Return on Investment) that UX research has made to a particular product. In organisations or on projects where budgets are limited or attitudes aren’t favourable to UX, it’s often important to show the difference user research can make, rather than explaining it. Normally consists of: - A/B testing - Analytics (quantitative data) Process & Timeline Now let’s see how the 3 types of research come together to form the research process. The 3 stages of research can be followed sequentially and then repeated in an iterative way. So, once you have completed the process once, you can then go back to the beginning and repeat it as many times as you want to continue gathering more insight and improving the product continuously. Alternatively, depending on the unique needs and requirements of a project, you may be constrained to start at one of the later research stages. For example, you might join a company that has just shipped the first MVP version of their product and needs to understand users usage patterns and analytic data before deciding what to next. Computational Plasma Astrophysics: July 18, 2016 Prospects in Theoretical Physics is an intensive two-week summer program typically designed for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars considering a career in theoretical physics (for 2014 only the program was one week in length). First held by the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in the summer of 2002, the PiTP program is designed to provide lectures and informal sessions on the latest advances and open questions in various areas of theoretical physics. One of the goals of the program is to help the physics community train the next generation of scholars in theoretical physics. A special effort is made to reach out to women and minorities, as well as to graduate students in small universities who typically do not have the same opportunities and access to leaders in the field as graduate students in large research institutions. Prospects in Theoretical Physics builds on the strong relationship of the research groups at the Institute and Princeton University, and many faculty members from the physics departments at both institutions are actively involved in the program together with scientists from neighboring institutions. Speakers as diverse as Eric Drooker, New Yorker artist, to Beau Lewis, producer of the American Hipster series, to John Murray, scientist at the SRI International labs, came to share their perspectives on Identity. Martin Steinert, researcher at the Stanford Center for Design Research Martin Steinert, Acting Assistant Professor ME, is Deputy Director of the Center for Design Research (CDR) and of the Hasso Plattner Design Thinking Research Program (HPDTRP) at Stanford University. His research focuses on optimizing the intersection between engineering, new product development and the design process.He got hooked on Design Thinking when he spent some time at CDR in 2008 as visiting scholar. In 2009 he continued to explore the field by joining the Product Design and Development group of Prof. Warren Seering, PhD at MIT, again for a semester as visiting scholar. Martin fully "converted" to Design Thinking Research by joining Stanford and Larry's group in April 2010 as Deputy Director of CDR.His special interest is to combine empirical research methods of quantitative and qualitative nature to create a comprehensive research designs. Threats arise in a company’s external environment and might harm its current business.

Rochelle King, the senior designer at Spotify, was recently challenged to combine the many mismatched interfaces of Spotify into a single harmonious layout. She walks us through the process of redesigning a major website, revealing best practices for navigating the relationship between designers, data, and the people for whom it is built. Rochelle is Global VP of User Experience and Design at Spotify, where she manages the teams that are responsible for user research and designing the product experience at Spotify. Prior to Spotify, Rochelle was VP of User Experience and Product Services at Netflix, where she managed the Design, Enhanced Content, Content Marketing and Localization teams. Collectively, these groups were responsible for the UI, layout, meta-data (editorial and visual assets) and presentation of the Netflix service internationally across all platforms. It is the fundamental Learner Experience (LX) design principles, which when implemented well, can promote more effective and efficient learning. In this Tech Talk, we’ll draw upon a variety of sources to include evidence-based learning design principles, and usability guidelines, which are part of a comprehensive research-based approach to learning design. A set of heuristics which set the stage for making a measurable impact on learning will be presented, and the intersection between instructional design, user experience research and participatory design will be explored. Speaker Info: Lisa Maurer- Lisa has always been fascinated with the learning process, particularly within digital environments. This began during her teaching career when her use of educational technology led to startling reading growth for her students, and continued as she applied rigorous instructional design principles to the development of digital military training programs. This range of experiences has shaped her approach to managing a variety of Human Computer Interaction research activities within the Product Design Research & Efficacy Center at Pearson Education. Lisa holds a B.S. in Sociology from Northern Arizona University, Post Baccalaureate teaching certification, and a Master’s in Educational Psychology from the University of Iowa.
