Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

3D Anthropometric Sizing Analysis System

01:04
Lee, W., Lee, B., Kim, S., Jung, H., Bok, I., Kim, C., Kwon, O., Choi, T., and You, H. (2015). Development of headforms and an anthropometric sizing analysis system for head-related product designs. In Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) 59th Annual Meeting. (Los Angeles, CA, USA, Oct. 26-30, 2015). The present study developed a sizing analysis system based on the Civilian American and European Surface Anthropometry Resource (CAESAR) database of North Americans (n = 2,299) for head-related product designs. To find representative heads from a huge amount of 3D human scan database, a sizing analysis system is required for efficient analysis of sizing systems based on anthropometric measurements. The head of the CAESAR 3D scan were manually edited to improve a quality for better use to the product design. Twenty one anthropometric landmarks were marked on the edited 3D heads to measure 40 anthropometric dimensions related to the head product designs. All head and face dimensions were automatically measured by applying a measurement system coded using Matlab. Fifteen representative headforms were generated in terms of 5 ethnic groups (composite group, Caucasians, American Africans, Asians, and Hispanics) and 3 gender groups (composite gender, males, and females). Finally, the sizing analysis system was developed based on the measurement of the CAESAR for analysis of head and facial measurements and generation of sizing systems.

Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

01:03:26
There are a number of challenges that the industry faces in order to transition towards more competitive, systematic and efficient manufacturing. Regulatory authorities have recognized the deficiencies of pharmaceutical product manufacturing and aim to enhance process understanding through Quality by Design (QbD) and Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools. As a result of this current effort to change the mindset in order to mimic the rest of the chemical industry, an additional transition is becoming more and more appealing: transition from batch to continuous production mode. However, continuous manufacturing requires detailed process understanding in terms of the evolution of all critical material properties as a function of its operating parameters and environmental conditions. Once process knowledge is translated into models, computer aided dynamic simulation tools will allow the design, analysis and optimization of continuous integrated processes. In this talk I will discuss the work that has been done in my lab towards the development of an integrated platform that will enable the efficient flowsheet simulation and analysis, the assessment of design alternatives, the feasibility analysis of the production line, and the control and optimization of process design and operations. The developed flowsheet model includes modules for all the necessary unit operations, namely powder feeding, mixing, roller compaction, tablet press and milling integrated to represent a tablet manufacturing line. Models used to represent each unit operation vary from empirical, first-principle or hybrid. Population balance models are developed in order to track the composition and particle size changes throughout complex powder processes dynamically. The developed flowsheet simulation is used to predict the propagation of upstream disturbances to final product quality, the assessment of recycle stream benefits, the identification of process integration bottlenecks and evaluation of different control strategies in order to retain the process within its design space. In addition, global dynamic sensitivity analysis is performed to identify critical process parameters not only within each unit operation, but also between different processes. Finally, simulation based optimization techniques enable the identification of the optimal operating conditions, as well as the optimal design sequence which leads to pharmaceutical tablets with desired characteristics. This work aims to merge knowledge, experience, experimental results and modeling tools for developing a dynamic simulation platform that will enable the safe implementation of the transition towards continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing. Visit Strata Conference: http://strataconf.com Read Learning Autodesk AutoCAD: http://goo.gl/FMxSYk Jet engines, lifelike movie monsters, cancer-fighting nanorobots, and bespoke products. We live in a world where everything around us is designed by someone. The pace of innovation is escalating and with new methods of manufacturing, such as 3D printing, the demands placed on designers and design technology are increasing. What if there was a better way to organize all this information and allow ideas and creations to emerge more organically? We will explore how the design software of the future can emulate nature through the application of data science to 3D data. We introduce a geometric shape analysis and machine learning technology we call the Design Graph. By learning from millions of 3D models and then assembling a knowledge graph, it is able to react to a constantly-evolving world, guiding the designs of the future. About Mike Haley: Mike leads the Emerging Products & Technology team at Autodesk where they identify, evaluate, and develop disruptive technologies that improve the practice of imagining, designing, and creating a better world. His team combines research, development, and user experience in coupled iterative cycles to develop new products and foundational technology. Autodesk Research: Project Dreamcatcher Bridge

00:11
Project Dreamcatcher allows designers to specify functional requirements like material type, manufacturing method, performance criteria, and cost restrictions, and based on these design requirements, Dreamcatcher searches a procedurally synthesized design space to evaluate a vast number of generated designs for satisfying the design requirements. The resulting design alternatives are presented back to the designer along with the performance data of each solution. The designer can then select the alternative based on the performance data or other factors such as aesthetics. In other words, instead of modeling a design by hand, analyzing it, failing, and iteratively updating the design by hand until it passes the analysis, Project Dreamcatcher generates designs and shows them to the designer who can pick one. This is important research because it ties into the future of making things. One of our summer interns in OCTO was Chin-Yi Cheng who is majoring in Design and Computation at MIT. Chin-Yi used his experience in design and mechanical engineering to demonstrate how future designers could tackle challenges using Project Dreamcatcher by implementing an iterative, interactive optimization process. As part of his summer project, Chin-Yi used Project Dreamcatcher to design a bridge. Another one of our summer interns in OCTO was Andres Vitale who is majoring in Fine Art and Business at New York University. Andres used his experience in visual arts and filmmaking to demonstrate how future designers could tackle challenges using Project Dreamcatcher, Fusion 360, and ReCap. As part of his summer project, Andres inserted Chin-Yi's Project Dreamcatcher-designed bridge into real-life footage of a nearby waterway.
