Here is the series on dressing for your specific body type: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9e2viG3AuRML-wHc5hDJN-d7YwrSYLuE And here is my previous video about French style rules: https://youtu.be/gAbV5hJzhL4 Key pieces mentioned: - White shirt - Tailored blazer - Ballerinas or loafers - (Little) black dress - Perfect T-Shirt in several colors - Turtleneck sweater in a cosy fabric - Pair or dark blue jeans - Huge scarf - Purse where everything fits - Back and pointy high heels Take care! I searched on black dress justine and did not find the helpful video you mentioned. I saw the little black dress phenomenon in NYC snd i was fascinated. I was wondering how would one do that dress for an apple with a stomach?

Wow! I should be French! I own many great quality white shirts. One really nice long sleeve black dress, one 3/4 sleeve. Many cashmere sweaters, And many nice dark jeans! Great! Seems I am doing better than I thought I would. They are all my preferences too! Thank you! 🌹

I'm French-Canadian and it must be a DNA thing because my signature style matches everything you mentioned. It just comes natural.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention sunglasses I pretty much have everything checked except I prefer chunkier not-too-sexy heels
Suzanne Derringer (19 days ago)
These are clothes for a professional urban woman, specifically suited to Paris. Many of us don't live that chic life! Even within that construct - I luved most of my adult life in NYC, and though some black was almost mandatory - harsh black or white never suited my soft coloring. Cream rather than white. Grey or brown instead of black. Had one Little Black Dress in my 20s - I felt like an Italian widow, never mind how bare the bodice was. High pointy heels? Only if you have really pretty legs - and don't mind suffering. Never wore heels higher than 2 inches - and NOT narrow pointy toes. They harm your feet. Wear something for 10 or 20 years? Get real! Your life changes - your body changes - the Zeitgeist changes. You will want fresh things every few years in the same general style...but a somewhat different cut or fabric or color... Lugging a lot of stuff all day in an oversized bag is tiring and NOT elegant.

I think that it is good to own two ‘little’ black dresses, one more formal and another more casual. I have nice LBDs but they are all quite formal. I don’t really want to throw them on for every day!

I did not know my fashion taste is actually more french. I like things simple and elegant. I always prefer basic colored clothes and if possible, no prints, but if there is, just minimal print that can go with anything I pair it with. And your shopping tips are what I’ve been practicing, though I just not buy something right away because of money, but it’s a good tip. It’s true, impulse purchase is bad.

I'm 8/10 French. I hate white shirts althought I have..And I don't have ballerina. I like those kind of shoes but I just don't like to wear them. I prefer pumps for walking. Thank you so much for this inspirational video. At least I know I' a little French at some point :)

I didn't know this was going to be a lesson from the enviro-nuts! We can't wear (I don't, but that's inconsequential) bleached denim because there's the environmentalist squad on the "prowl"? pls...
Robin Moore (1 month ago)
Just a thought- not everyone can wear certain colors very well. For me, white is just...wrong, lol.The white shirt idea would be more like...an "off white" or cream. My skin tone clashes with white. Also...not everyone looks great in black, too. Maybe navy? Thanks for all you do! Great job.

ha, i always dress way more formal, but i'm old and lived a bit in rural southern italy. No neutral colours or black suit me, i'm strictly bright colours. And i always wear lace-up shoes - smart ones. video like: earrings. They're the instant dressed-up piece of jewellery/makeup. Sling on a pair and you've 'made an effort' and are ready to go. But i can never find some basic classic pairs that will see me through everything - a video like your classics videos ('your skirt' this video etc) but earrings? Odd request, i know. Or, a video on work jewellery? that says 'i'm independent and stylish' with no hint of anything else and doesn't look messy, clink, catch on things, outline your bosoms (if you have bigger bosoms, some necklaces outline them and brooches droop or won't sit straight - this is unwanted at work) etc? thanks!

I have all of these things. I find more and more that anything French is just how things are done here in the Southern United States (the proper society parts, not the crap trash parts)

Oh, the tips with going home without a purchase is actually what I do for a loooong tme already :) But I do it in 3 steps: I go shopping, try it. Go home and wai few days, I go again and try it again. If it still feels like I need it and it fits (yes, need instead of want) then I go home again and wait another 24 hours. Then I buy.

one more great, succinct, witty and organized video. In America a long time ago my sister, who was a great fan of Oprah, urged me to watch a segment where she was advocating this wardrobe approach to women for financial reasons; so much money gets wasted over time otherwise. Not sure it caught on, but a valiant attempt on her part.
Samara V Hamilton (1 month ago)
The quality and 24-hour rules are the best. Hmmm how "French" am I (in the style department)? When I go out and make some sort of effort, I'm a 7 or 8. Let's just not talk about when I'm at home, hm?

I was waiting to see the "typical" french black-striped, long-sleeved t-shirt and I didn't see it!! ;cD My daughter loves those 'french t-shirts' as she calls them. And what about berets? Or is a beret a stereotype article?
Ana Butyrski (2 months ago)
I have a hard time following this in America. There are a lot of fast fashion stores and the brands that do produce better quality clothing are extremely overpriced because of the name of the brand. I try shopping at Nordstrom Rack for the same reason but it’s still challenging finding something priced for the quality over the brand. Let me know if anyone have any stores that they can recommend. Justine, I love your voice, it’s so soothing.
Lily Lebowsky (10 days ago)
Ana Butyrski save to buy items you truly love. Those ‘overpriced’ items will last years. Quality over quantity

My question is; how many pieces should you have in your wardrobe?
Lyndree Malang (2 months ago)
I have all of them ☺️

I do that 24 hour wait ,unless I absolutely love the piece. I don't have a white shirt though and I have white shirts but just never reach for them, not sure why this is. I love my turtleneck s u own black, navy and burgundy ones.

1. A white crisp tailored shirt. With a defined waist. 2. An elegant blazer 3. A good pair of flats/loafers 4. A (little) black dress that suits your figure. (Your best possible silhouette) 5. A black T-shirt and extras in different colors. Quality. Vneck, or crew neck. 6. Perfect Sweater (turtleneck). Good material/Cashmere 7. Well fitted pair of dark jeans 8. A huge scarf-multi purposes 9. A really big bag 10. Black high pointy heels.

Where I live, we have a lot of French tourists. I can spot French people right away because the way they dress. When they start speaking I laugh Inside because I was right ahah! The hair, the glasses, the comfy but chic style, the shoes… French people really have a great taste in fashion. Less is more and you don't look good if you don't feel good in your clothes. Love it.

Simo Simo (2 months ago)
Thank you Justine for your wise advices. I need an elegant blazer (I prefer Chanel style jackets in spring over dark blue jeans), a black dress (I've got a black evening dress still perfect that suit me very well, but it's long and for summer), I don't like scarves in summer, (I think it's ridiculous the scarf over a top without sleeves, fortunately this fashion has gone in Italy). I love flats but this fashion has gone, sadly. In Italy there are sleepers with high soles everywhere, I don't like them at all. In winter I love 'beatles' boots and english shoes, in summer flat sandals or kitten sandals. I don't like big bags because I'm short I and I put only the essential in my bag, for the gym or the pool I use another bag. Sorry for my bad english!

I must be very French because I have everything except the black pointed tip high heels...and the only reason why I don't have those is because I have bunions and plantar fasciitis, so I can no longer wear heels 😢. I really enjoy watching your videos! 😁👍

Justine, You live in Germany now. Do you see a distinct difference in fashion sense between France and Germany for women? I live in America. Have you visited America? I am certainly no expert, but I don't see a lot of "sense" in American fashions. I think we are too busy copying other people, like celebrities or other countries. What do you think? Nina

This video has been so helpful plus the video on body shape. I recently donated 75% of my wardrobe. I’ve gone with block, white grey and touches of red. I feel so great now when I go out and I’m no longer invisible! Today I wore dark jeans, leopard pointy flats, white crisp shirt and the best thin, black leather jacket that minimizes my bust. It’s my birthday and I felt fabulous! Thank you.

I just found you, so happy I did. Thank you! I always felt that I was somewhat out of place with how I dress, but now I know that I just need to be in France :) I literary own all the basics you mention but the best part is when you said that you wear the button down shirts on the weekend as well!- That is so me. It made me so happy to just feel so understood. Thank you!

Stop buying fast fashion, and then just save up and buy essential clothing from sustainable brands. Keep the idea in mind that your wardrobe is probably way too big and you have graphic shirts and the like you don’t wear often. You don’t need fashion as much as you think you do.
Emilia Zambrano (3 months ago)
I love your videos! I would add a black leather jacket I think they are so useful in formal and informal events 😊
Annette Davies (3 months ago)
While I love the advice given re French chic/style (and yes, I’ve recently subscribed),what most people seem to forget is that not everyone has the same skin tone. I don’t mean tan, light, dark, I mean skin TONE. I have/had natural reddish highlights in my hair (they’re starting to ash) with (as I call it) redhead skin, Fair, burns easily and slow to tan. My veins (inner wrist) are more green/blue.

To resume, elegance is in simple things. About the 4 questions, that's what I usually think when i go shopping, so i go home with empty hands (or my impulse is stronger than me and i buy things that i can wear just a couple of times). Great video!! Oh, and thanks for that thing you said about jeans, i didn't know. I always preferred light jeans, but next time I'll go for the darker (:
