How to Wash a Down Jacket

304 ratings | 113124 views
I love my down jacket, but after putting off washing it for 2 yrs (it's not as gross as it sounds - I wash my base layers after every use!) I couldn't wait any longer. Here's how to do it! http://www.lotsafreshair.com

Nice! Glad it worked for you... Some of the newer micro down jackets are impossible to wash without ruining them. I hand wash them inside and out then tumble as you did...
Lotsafreshair (1 year ago)
Oh, that's unfortunate. What do the manufacturers instructions recommend?

Wow.. that hair!
Lotsafreshair (1 year ago)
Yep... just cut it all off. So much better!
Nathgta09 (1 year ago)
What are you supposed to do if you followed all the given steps but even after your coat is 100% dry the feathers inside the jacket are still clumped up?

Can you do it without the tennis balls
Lotsafreshair (2 years ago)
Yep, sure can. But the balls certainly help to 'pooooof' it all up again and shift the down around inside the jacket.

Hi there! Great video, and glad I found one based in Australia. Where can I find this Lux soap flakes?
Lotsafreshair (3 years ago)
Hey +Tommy Ho - you can find them in the laundry powder section of any Woolworths or Coles type supermarket. Goodluck!

RetroGamer (3 years ago)
+Lotsafreshair no prob. Ty for feedback ☺
Lotsafreshair (3 years ago)
Sorry +RetroGamer, this site is all about hiking gear - no idea about bomberjackets. Best to check with the manufacturer on the label.

i have a question i have a white down feather coat and i live in west virginia united states and it snows and they put lots of salt on the roads and our cars get seriously dirty and it got on my white coat and wondering what would be good to get the stains off any suggestions please
Lotsafreshair (3 years ago)
+val kendrick Hmmm, good question Val, but I"m sorry I don't really know the answer. For a 'city coat' like this that you probably want to 'keep nice'... probably best to check in with the manufacturers.

Is lye soap mild enough for down?
Lotsafreshair (3 years ago)
+nwad7001 I'm not familiar with lye soap (I needed to Google it!), so I can't say for sure. Probably best to check with the manufacturer of your down jacket to be sure! Thanks for stopping by.

I just just regular soap like Tide and wash it by hand. and dry it in the dryer medium heat for 30min. and low heat for hour 1/2. Fresh and clean no problem. But the best thing to do is just go buy any kind of down detergent because it will help maintained oil in the down. Most important thing is was it with waterproof wash-in so your jacket will be water resistance. Most people dont want to waste money for down detergent and DWR wash-in but think about it, you have 200-300 dollar jacket and u wanted to keep it nice for a long time right? Spend that extra money and maintain your jacket the correct way.

real challenge is this - how to dry such jacket in winter and in the apartment ha :)
Lotsafreshair (4 years ago)
Hmmm, Hiking I'd say Macpac (disclosure as I'm one of their ambassadors!) or Kathmandu and mountaineering would be Mountain Equipment.
Sebastian Kaczorowski (4 years ago)
+Lotsafreshair yeah, or wait 5 days ;-) What is most well known hiking / mountaineering brand in Australia? Here in EU, I think its TNF.
Lotsafreshair (4 years ago)
Definitely go with a clothes dryer in that case... or a quick trip out to the laundromat!
David Simpson (4 years ago)
What if you haven't got a tumble drier?
David Simpson (4 years ago)
+Lotsafreshair thanks for that.
Lotsafreshair (4 years ago)
Hmmm, tough one. Go to the laundromat? If you don't have one nearby, try contacting the manufacturer of your jacket for their advice.
Sumer61 (4 years ago)
Your video was very informative. I have a sky blue down jacket, and all down the front, it's gotten grimey from wearing it to work in a factory.  Should I pretreat the grime staines beforehand? Because I washed it already in the washing machine, and it came out the same as it went in! Is it possible to pretreat it with a baking soda & vinegar solution?
Sumer61 (4 years ago)
+Lotsafreshair Thanx, will do :)
Lotsafreshair (4 years ago)
Good question Sumer61. I'm thinking it would depend on what the fabric on the outside is. Best bet would be to pop an email to the manufacturer and check with them. Down jackets are a bit of a financial investment, so probably best to check that they're going to survive any treatment that we give them!
