We got our hands on Stihl's smallest professional chainsaw, the MS201C. It is a light weight but yet powerful saw meant for smaller tasks like thinning young forests and cutting firewood. Here is what we though about it. Piece of shit. The saw and the company behind it. They lost my business. One week pass the one year warranty after trying to diagnose the problem with their piece of junk for a year shop finally figured it out. A week late. Stihl won't stand behind their products. Thousand dollars bought their best smallest lightest arborist saw with an extra bar and a couple extra chains. $998 as I left the shop. Thing never ran longer than 10 minutes straight. I take it out it would fail like take it back to the shop they have it for a couple weeks I get it back couple weeks later maybe I take it out on a job again. it runs 10 minutes and then cuts out. the only way it would run is if you stayed wide-open on it. soon as you let off the throttle one smidgen would die. I take it back to the shop they tell me it has a dirty air filter. three new air filters later and dozen various trips to the shop couple hundred dollars in shop time..They replaced something filter or some small part in the gas tank and said that was it. I get it back thinking my problems finally been fixed I take it out and have it run 10 or 15 minutes again. Finally after a year they finally tell me they figured out what's wrong with it and it's going to cost three hundred and some dollars to fix it. so it's been hanging on a hook on my porch 4 like 2 years. I bought a couple Box Store saws and a top of the line Husqvarna tree saw. It's awesome it runs. Hell even the cheapy Box Store saws beat my Stihl hands down. they'll run that little piece of junk into the ground. an expensive saw isn't going to cut any better than a cheap one especially if it won't even run. I was surprised to find that my 38 CC cheap cheap cheap saw wood run my 36 in 3/8 .05 bar. as long as you have a sharp chain and don't lean into it too hard. it does a pretty decent job of it. Of course it's not going to keep up with my 395xp but it's light convenient and it does a pretty good job. I would have even been happy with a couple hundred dollars off the purchase of a new top end saw. Or even a jug of bar oil or something. Stihl said I had nothing coming basically sit and spin. they took my $1,000 like a thief in the night

I had a 039 that finally bit the dust. Just went shopping for a new comparable Stihl , had not heard of the M- tronic before yesterday, is that the route to go or is it one more thing to break. Dealer wasn't pushing it which worried me?
Rusty Shackelford (1 month ago)
Good choice for Sweden, no big trees left to cut 😀
Christopher Beaulieu (2 months ago)
I like Tim. I dont know what you pay for big macs and Starbucks but that wont get you a stihl saw. I ran one or those at work and it is light but gutless. The husky 440 is a close second. If you dont push on them they cut but if you do they bog
Mr11ESSE111 (2 months ago)
Stihl are heavily overpriced for that what it offer

I use this chainsaw as a trim saw as our company banned top handle saws. Love it from top to bottom!
Echo cs-2511 is much much better

I wish some will do brake down on ms170 vs poulan pro. I know poulan has way more cc. But drum look bigger is 3/8 vs 1/4. The fule lines better. What about the oiler.
Ricky Spencer (3 months ago)
The 201c is actually not the smallest pro saw that stihl makes . . .
CluelessBeeKeeping (3 months ago)
So cute!
GEORGE ZARIFIS (3 months ago)
My only complaint with small saws is that you have to bend over all the time to use them. I prefer a heavier saw with a longer bar...
BillTheKill (3 months ago)
the best chainsaw for arborist is 2511 echo .......and only echo.........i like your videos but are like a promotion to husky
Jeff jones (3 months ago)
Excellent video and assessment of the MS 201 C saw! What would be the equivalent model in the Husqvarna saw?
Janis Andersons (2 months ago)
I think only older Husqvarna 339xp. New and actual model xp line have smallest 543xp made by Komatsu-Zenoah and true Swedish made starts from 550xp upwards.

STIHL , at the forefront of innovation , I might just get this little baby !

I am definitely a stihl guy. Have the ms251 not to heavy but just enough power. I would maybe upgrade to ms261 someday anyway thanks for the vid.

I bought a used husk ..not sure the size but it clips on my belt..
Johan Abrahamsson (4 months ago)
At 6:30 he mention that the black line on the side can be used for the humbled method. What does that mean? I have never heard about that methood.
Kari Kähäri (4 months ago)
Still, the old MS200 is more popular here in Finland. I'm not saying the 201 is bad, just that most professional people here think the predecessor was a bit better.
Simon Hopper (4 months ago)
I dont belive this is a pro grade. They have it as a farm and ranch on website for America anyhow.
Mark Feasel (4 months ago)
Chain sounds tight. I could be wrong.
3wrapframe (5 months ago)
Yeah and it aint cheap, you are paying for the size, in some small weird way.
ducman228 (5 months ago)
What size bar did you switch it to for the video?

im not really sure how you review poertools like chainsawns and such when its legit just a motor in either a metal or plastic cover they're all the same
Stoup 23 (6 months ago)
i use the ms 201c everyday at work it's a perfect chainsaw, light and nervous, you can work with it all day long without being to tired. it's also perfect for beginners, to learn basics and safety.

Man do I love the sound of chainsaws
tobimaxx (6 months ago)
I had the 192c which is a similar compact saw but less powerful. Was great for light work until it was stolen grrrr

Stihl offers an *air fleece filter* to avoid dust ingestion with some woods. Good to assure a long lasting service. My father is 81 and still cutting wood with this chainsaw.

Cool. What size bar was that, that you did put on it..?

Does the ms 201 C-EM have the same powerhead and internal parts as the ms 201T CM? Is the ms 201 C-EM rear handle a pro saw?
peterterritory (7 months ago)
why is there a 201 and a 201c i am seeing on internet. is the c just a newer model?
The MS150TC is Stihl's smallest pro saw.
Kelly Joplin (7 months ago)
Hands down the best STIHL ms 201 C-EM vid online anywhere. Keep it up, and please do one on the STIHL ms 241 C-M as well. Thank you
Kelly Joplin (7 months ago)
I meant the ms 241 C
Your saw chain is too tight
Jeff Bourke (8 months ago)
Wilford Lewis McGee (8 months ago)
isn't this considered a farm & ranch saw? at least in the US it is, the smallest pro saw (as of sept 19, 2018) is MS 241-CM

Whats to test, Sthl no better chainsaw been using them for 50 years.
worldpeace32 (8 months ago)
If you listen carefully he said the older 201s have issues, i can't imagine a popular brand like stihl have issues i wonder what's that about?
Tyrone Layes (8 months ago)
My Stihl155 top handle is smaller than this ? The 201 is NOT the smallest...
BillTheKill (8 months ago)
echo 2511 eats this shit from german .....and only 2,3 kilos .......not 4 ...german shits as always

I was forced to use this as a trim saw after using the 200T. Yep, I was let down. This saw is garbage for a trim saw. Do not consider it for a trim saw.
tripleturbo duramax (8 months ago)
the only things i don't like about still chainsaws is that they have lots of compression.
Tink Ie (9 months ago)
I love this and I'm a female
BLDfarmmedic (9 months ago)
I use one of these 201s trimming trees every day. The power is nice and it gets the job done. BUT after a few weeks, the damn thing won’t stay running. Changing the plug helps for an hour or 2 but it still needs restarted constantly.

I have tried almost every brand of chainsaw and while I do like certain aspects about husqvarna and echo chainsaws the best part about the stihl chainsaws is parts availability and the dealer network in North America at least. Still dealers are almost like gas stations they are everywhere and it is extremely easy to get parts for them even 20-30 years after a product was produced. A few years back I fully restored a 028 wood boss and the stihl dealer was still able to get me the parts I needed to restore a chainsaw from the 80’s... I don’t use the 028 anymore but it’s nice to know it still runs like new if I ever need it. Also the price of stihl replacement parts are pretty fair compared to some other brands... usually a brand new carb for a stihl weed whacker or chainsaw is $20-40 and when I went to get a new carb for a echo weed wacker they wanted $80 for it at the echo dealer... So for those reasons I have decided to stick with stihl and stop testing other brands until they can catch up to stihl.

Pro tip... When making a chainsaw vid, leave out the music. We want to hear the saw, NOT the music.
Sidney Mathious (9 months ago)
I decided to buy a Poulan Pro battery saw after having problems with the new gas powered Poulan Pro, and still having the same problems with the Stihl MS-250 which I got a few years earlier and still having problems out of it. I won't buy another Stihl saw and hope not to have to buy any other saws at all since the new saw does what I want it to do.

I need a smaller saw to pair with my MS 462 C-M. I can't decide between the MS 201 C-M and the MS 241 C-M. Can anyone provide me with advice? Thank you in advance!

Where is the 395xp made???
Milan Mazić (10 months ago)
Why it has only one nut for the bar?
Dan Henderson (10 months ago)
It's not "Stihl's smallest chainsaw" The MS150T is far lighter and smaller.
Barbara Oglesby (10 months ago)
If I was going to get a small saw I would just get a ms 171
Kessia's Homestead (11 months ago)
Bought the next size up from the one your reviewing and it’s been nothing but a pain in the neck. It over heats within 15 mins of use, chain continually falls off . ( yes I know how to use it lol) And starting it up is a workout all on its own. If this is the best make there is I’d hate to try others.

Stihl needs to make metal elbows for their carburetors for an update to their machines if their the best working tools

Bustin Feelsgood (1 year ago)
Wow, all decked out in an abundance of unnecessary safety gear (crisp and clean with no stains I might add) like a couple of ass hats. Trimming bs sized wood with a saw that is ridiculously priced. A $200 USD Echo cs 310 is more than capable and just as light. SMH what a joke
Nanakiyami (3 months ago)
I think it's pretty clear who's the asshat here...

Hate those push style gas cans ... idk how you filled it up without spilling
Ted Parker (1 year ago)
I am a pro saw carver and right from the purchase this saw was junk. The carburetor is worthless and it was in the shop for 6 weeks and they couldn't fix it or get parts from Stihl Midwest. I finally called them and asked for my money back and they finally sent another carburetor, but upon installation it didn't work either. I will never buy a pro saw from Stihl again, and I am actively campaigning against them for making trash. The MS 200 was a great saw, they now have ruined it.
MICHAEL SELIX (1 year ago)
All the Safety gear, and yet i never her you lock the chain brake when walking around.

You taking stihl's word for power-output numbers?

They are using more and more plastic in saws........ Plastic is not that great next to a heated engine
Mud Jackson (1 year ago)
ALRIGHT LETS GET SOME SHIT STRAIGHT! Stihl is a dependable saw, Day after day operating properly bearly ever needs work done to it. A Husky will be in the shop on a consistant basis costing you money every time. Would you rather have to work with DEPENDABILITY or would you rather work with JUNK?
frank digiovanni (1 year ago)

We have two of these small saws. Works fine. Oddly enough one of them is a bit "happier" than the other. Unknown why. Only real negative is the massively annoying oil and gas caps. Hard to close and easy to spill gas all over the place. Normal screw in caps pleae. Stihl.
James Lee (3 months ago)
i had a 40 cc stihl . ran okay but it had those stupid caps and also starting problems .
