Testing Stihl's Smallest Pro Chainsaw MS 201C - A Little Beast

2877 ratings | 350655 views
We got our hands on Stihl's smallest professional chainsaw, the MS201C. It is a light weight but yet powerful saw meant for smaller tasks like thinning young forests and cutting firewood. Here is what we though about it. i use the ms 201c everyday at work it's a perfect chainsaw, light and nervous, you can work with it all day long without being to tired. it's also perfect for beginners, to learn basics and safety.

Man do I love the sound of chainsaws

I had the 192c which is a similar compact saw but less powerful. Was great for light work until it was stolen grrrr

Stihl offers an *air fleece filter* to avoid dust ingestion with some woods. Good to assure a long lasting service. My father is 81 and still cutting wood with this chainsaw.

Does the ms 201 C-EM have the same powerhead and internal parts as the ms 201T CM? Is the ms 201 C-EM rear handle a pro saw?
peterterritory (2 months ago)
why is there a 201 and a 201c i am seeing on internet. is the c just a newer model?
SNELLERIZED GARAGE (2 months ago)
The MS150TC is Stihl's smallest pro saw.
Kelly Joplin (2 months ago)
Hands down the best STIHL ms 201 C-EM vid online anywhere. Keep it up, and please do one on the STIHL ms 241 C-M as well. Thank you

I meant the ms 241 C

isn't this considered a farm & ranch saw? at least in the US it is, the smallest pro saw (as of sept 19, 2018) is MS 241-CM

Whats to test, Sthl no better chainsaw been using them for 50 years.
worldpeace32 (3 months ago)
If you listen carefully he said the older 201s have issues, i can't imagine a popular brand like stihl have issues i wonder what's that about?
ben nichols (3 months ago)
Whats wrong with the 661? Maybe a comparison to the 395 or its modern equivalent.
Tyrone Layes (3 months ago)
My Stihl155 top handle is smaller than this ? The 201 is NOT the smallest...

Rob Bam (3 months ago)
That's a climbing saw with a handle extension on the back of it
Kyle Moore (3 months ago)
I was forced to use this as a trim saw after using the 200T. Yep, I was let down. This saw is garbage for a trim saw. Do not consider it for a trim saw.
gd bunsen (3 months ago)
the only things i don't like about still chainsaws is that they have lots of compression.
Tink Ie (4 months ago)
I love this and I'm a female
BLDfarmmedic (4 months ago)
I use one of these 201s trimming trees every day. The power is nice and it gets the job done. BUT after a few weeks, the damn thing won’t stay running. Changing the plug helps for an hour or 2 but it still needs restarted constantly.

I have tried almost every brand of chainsaw and while I do like certain aspects about husqvarna and echo chainsaws the best part about the stihl chainsaws is parts availability and the dealer network in North America at least. Still dealers are almost like gas stations they are everywhere and it is extremely easy to get parts for them even 20-30 years after a product was produced. A few years back I fully restored a 028 wood boss and the stihl dealer was still able to get me the parts I needed to restore a chainsaw from the 80’s... I don’t use the 028 anymore but it’s nice to know it still runs like new if I ever need it. Also the price of stihl replacement parts are pretty fair compared to some other brands... usually a brand new carb for a stihl weed whacker or chainsaw is $20-40 and when I went to get a new carb for a echo weed wacker they wanted $80 for it at the echo dealer... So for those reasons I have decided to stick with stihl and stop testing other brands until they can catch up to stihl.
Bill Chambers (4 months ago)
Pro tip... When making a chainsaw vid, leave out the music. We want to hear the saw, NOT the music.
Sidney Mathious (4 months ago)
I decided to buy a Poulan Pro battery saw after having problems with the new gas powered Poulan Pro, and still having the same problems with the Stihl MS-250 which I got a few years earlier and still having problems out of it. I won't buy another Stihl saw and hope not to have to buy any other saws at all since the new saw does what I want it to do.

I need a smaller saw to pair with my MS 462 C-M. I can't decide between the MS 201 C-M and the MS 241 C-M. Can anyone provide me with advice? Thank you in advance!

Milan Mazić (5 months ago)
Why it has only one nut for the bar?
Dan Henderson (5 months ago)
It's not "Stihl's smallest chainsaw" The MS150T is far lighter and smaller.
Barbara Oglesby (5 months ago)
If I was going to get a small saw I would just get a ms 171
mockin jay (6 months ago)
Bought the next size up from the one your reviewing and it’s been nothing but a pain in the neck. It over heats within 15 mins of use, chain continually falls off . ( yes I know how to use it lol) And starting it up is a workout all on its own. If this is the best make there is I’d hate to try others.

Stihl needs to make metal elbows for their carburetors for an update to their machines if their the best working tools

Bustin Feelsgood (7 months ago)
Wow, all decked out in an abundance of unnecessary safety gear (crisp and clean with no stains I might add) like a couple of ass hats. Trimming bs sized wood with a saw that is ridiculously priced. A $200 USD Echo cs 310 is more than capable and just as light. SMH what a joke
tjlovesrachel (7 months ago)
Hate those push style gas cans ... idk how you filled it up without spilling
Ted Parker (7 months ago)
I am a pro saw carver and right from the purchase this saw was junk. The carburetor is worthless and it was in the shop for 6 weeks and they couldn't fix it or get parts from Stihl Midwest. I finally called them and asked for my money back and they finally sent another carburetor, but upon installation it didn't work either. I will never buy a pro saw from Stihl again, and I am actively campaigning against them for making trash. The MS 200 was a great saw, they now have ruined it.
MICHAEL SELIX (7 months ago)
All the Safety gear, and yet i never her you lock the chain brake when walking around.

You taking stihl's word for power-output numbers?
Warstone (7 months ago)
They are using more and more plastic in saws........ Plastic is not that great next to a heated engine
Mud Jackson (7 months ago)
ALRIGHT LETS GET SOME SHIT STRAIGHT! Stihl is a dependable saw, Day after day operating properly bearly ever needs work done to it. A Husky will be in the shop on a consistant basis costing you money every time. Would you rather have to work with DEPENDABILITY or would you rather work with JUNK?
frank digiovanni (7 months ago)

We have two of these small saws. Works fine. Oddly enough one of them is a bit "happier" than the other. Unknown why. Only real negative is the massively annoying oil and gas caps. Hard to close and easy to spill gas all over the place. Normal screw in caps pleae. Stihl.
William Hjortfors (7 months ago)
Im a lucky man to have shared forestry school with Tim back in 2005. :)
Michael Dougfir (7 months ago)
Stihl saws are AMONG the very best saws made. They have had problems with ATTITUDE as well as engineering. My grandfather used to say, Don't buy something newly developed. Wait until it is perfected. Wait till the bugs are worked out. I am not bothered by a saw that looks odd. As long as it is strong and reliable. Did you say this saw comes in a top handle model? I would like to see it. And does it have a strong rope ring on the back for climbing arborists? Thank you for the demonstration. And the good narration.
Nunya Bizness (8 months ago)
Thanks for the review on a smaller chainsaw. I have been looking for a lighter model that I can use as a (somewhat older) woman with not as much upper-body strength as I used to have, basically to use it for yard work & tree pruning.
Noah Schwartz (8 months ago)
That's a beast o my gosh
Joshua C Combs (8 months ago)
My ms211 does everything. It takes 12-14-16" bar and I can carve great and it has alot of power but you can never have too many sthil's
zerocool212121 (8 months ago)
Thats a great little saw, i have the 201t and love having the top handle. I havent modded mine as it does everything i want but maybe sometime down the line ill make it run even faster. I use this saw and my pole saw for the majority of stuff but will pull out my 310 for larger rounds. You can definitely tell the difference from the homeowner to the farmboss to the pro saws.
no privacy (8 months ago)
I wonder how it would sell in our store. We have several customers who maintain trails in Maine.
no privacy (8 months ago)
We have the MS241 C-E on our shelf. We have had it for a couple of months without selling one. I am puzzled by some things about it. They price is almost as much as an MS 261. It is 1 HP less than MS261, but only 1 pound lighter. It came with a 3/8 Picco bar and chain. Tim, Why so small a chain on a 3 HP saw?
Cody Hammock (8 months ago)
It's cute lol jk be good for toping trees other trimming

Todays chainsaws are no big deal. Once had a Canadian Pioneer and never had a better tool. Husqvarna is not good.
gpb (8 months ago)
as a stihl technician i can say that on the older 201 non m tronic saws i advance the timing to the same degrees as 201cm have and the saws are still running like a champ. they have totaly wrong timing becouse European exhaust emission terrorists constantly pushing stihl and husqvarna to play by their rules. thats why all the non m tronic saws today are set lean from the factory and need to be richen up to run properly.

Hi, is it made in China or in EU? I have two Husqvarna saws and one Stihl, the Husq. are made in Sweden and the Stihl shows Made in China.
WineScrounger (8 months ago)
If anything this is just as traditional as the upright cylinder design. Many older saws including Stihl units had a horizontal cylinder. Lovely little saw though. Interesting that they went for a clutch -outwards design like a Husky, it brings the bar in a little bit which I guess is important in a very small saw.

I use the same saw with a 14” bar (35cm), is that same as you have in vid or is that even a longer bar? I like its weight, however My old 200T seems more powerfull.
