Are you sure there are no polycarbonate or thermoplastic helmets that are Snell ? I don't agree with your statement about Cordura. It is very effective at protecting because of its ability to slide across the surface better. Of course the heavier Denier the better.
John Doe (24 days ago)
8:36 a correction and an important addition for anyone getting deep into standards. For high level protection look to see if the clothing meets EN13595 either in part of in full. Clothing made to prEN17092 has different levels starting at B (no impact protectors) A (same as B with impact protectors added), AA – medium level protection – and AAA which is high level. Even though prEN17092 is a newer standard, even AAA prEN17092(pr refers to it being a provisional standard) is (currently) inferior compared to EN13595. For the best, look for fully certified EN13595 clothing.

So what about thermoplastic-alloy? Is it any better than regular thermoplastic or is it the same? It is what my helmet uses.

Hi, RyanF9, I've got a Scorpion helmet that said "Thermoplastic Polycarbonate" is that on the peachy side or shietty side? Please let me know thanks! EDIT: well I just saw its DOT so I guess on the shietty side, but what is Thermoplastic Polycarbonate is considered peachy or it's just some shietty fancy word?
Randomizer (1 month ago)
+FortNine Thank you very much! I just stumble upon your channel and have to watch all your videos, then realize some of it was like 3 years ago LOL. I'm looking to ride next Summer and I look up WA State law, that all helm have to be labeled DOT inside and out. So that means even if ECE or SNELL, it still has to have DOT or the cops can ticket you?
FortNine (1 month ago)
Hey! "Thermoplastic" is just a fancy word for any plastic that becomes pliable when heated, so it can be made by injecting into a mould. Ignore that one - there are tons of thermoplastics out there are most of them have no relation to motorcycle stuff. Polycarbonate is the word that matters. Polycarb helmets are great at entry-level prices. ~RF9

I would also add zippers as a potential check point for quality. Usually YKK zippers are reserved for high quality items due to their cost.

@fortnine you left out one important aspect, that CE means China Export, its all over electronics and just about everything else, In that exact font, might wanna look into that and add it to your video.

i will have to say, one of the best, if not the best budget friendly helmet is the fly racing revolt ink ‘n needle helmet. has everything this video mentions to be a good helmet, comes with a tinted and clear visor, looks spectacular, and all of that for $125 dollars. i also just recently had a wreck with that exact lid on and the only damage it suffered from smacking the pavement at 70+ mph was a tiny scratch.

@FortNine How do I find out if a piece of gear is CE rated if it's not toted about? For example, the Icon Tarmac jacket... it has D30 armor bits in it which I know are CE rated, but what about the jacket itself? There's nothing about whether or not it was even tested to be rated. Nothing on RevZilla. Nothing on Cycle Gear. Nothing on Icon's own website product page for the jacket regarding its abrasion resistance. If they don't brag about it, is it safe to say they didn't get the kit rated? Should I find something else? Thanks!

NICE to know, nice video. Mayby something to remind. The CE sometimes is used by chinese companies to make it look like CE-safty standart but actualy means Chinese Export. So a T-shirt with the print of a motorcyclevest can wear a CE label. But then is actualy very unsafe. The do this not only with motor gear, but almost evrything that is build in China. From pencils to Hightec stuff. So beware!

I love the video, and all the explanations. But I was wondering about this helmet Scorpion EXO-AT950 on a discripcion I saw that is DOT but I say that DOT is like stone age, but earlier I saw your video called "Best adventure and Dual sport helmet'' and the scorpion was one of your choices. So it can you help me because I was tinking about buying the scorpion. And is my first helmet and I don't want to do a shit buy. Sorry for the big text. Thanks and keep up with the good work. 💪

I disagree with the snell or dot markings, they are "pass" or "fail" tests, which doesn't give a full picture. They also lead manufacturers meeting minimum standards. SHARP however, is a UK government sponsored test facility that does multiple tests on helmets far more destructive than any of the mentioned standards, and publishes full results with a star rating. There are ONE STAR helmets that meet all of the mentioned standard, there are also 5 STAR rated helmets which also have the same stickers yet are far far far safer. Please check your helmet, or any you are thinking of purchasing. There are "big name" helmets with 1/2 stars such as the Harley Davidson Laguna II (1*-$200), NZI Fibrup (2* $300) .. There are also 5* (best protection) helmets for cheaper such as Caberg Trip (5* $100), Nitro Aikido (5* $90). Check sharp.dft.gov.uk
