Best shirt in your closet hands down!! Thanks brother, great video. Man you have your hands full from that hurricane...i love my stihl..
+Farmall Fanatic Yes my daughter and I wanted matching shirts and seeing we don't have them for our channel we thought we would support another Marine.
Farmall Fanatic (2 months ago)
You got one of them teeshirts? 🤪
That is is nice shirt. I have a blue one. My daughter has a lite blue one.

+Keeping It Dutch,STIHL makes wonderful chainsaws.

I have a STIHL MS 201t top handle chainsaw, keep up the good work man.

My old 032AV (1984 +/-) won't run and parts are difficult to find. Looking at the MS311 because I can use all my 032 chains. Can anyone weight in on how the 2 may stack up?
Kesley Cottrell (2 days ago)
I used to love the Pioneer P52. Total torque monster.

Whats those gloves?
If you like Stihl chainsaws, check out stihl_collection on instagram :)

Looks very easy to use. Thanks for this kind of productive video
John Clarke (11 days ago)
I warm my equipment up the way I want to and for as long as I feel necessary. I break in all new equipment the same way. I do not do any hard work at all on the first tank. I do a little bit on the second tank of easy stuff. I will never throw a saw in heavy stuff until at a minimum the 3rd tank, ptrferably the 5th tank. On the first tank I let them just idle with an occasional run up. They also get a couple of extra caps of two cycle oil in the first two tanks of gas and I gradually wean them off the extra oil by the 3rd tank of gas. The longivety of a saw is in how you break them in. Break them in hard and they generally do not last as long. Break them in slow and easy and they will last a long time with good care and proper maintenance.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (11 days ago)
Thanks for the Tips John.....I appreciate it
Derek Rudkin (11 days ago)
It’s pronounced “Steel” (Stihl) not “still”, & it’s a chain, not blade
Stoney Ridge Farmer (11 days ago)
Thanks Derek....I appreciate it....I get corrected on my pronouncing Husqvarna...Willys Jeep and Stihl saws......sometimes I accidentally call the chain....the blade.....maybe because most sharp things are blades....I'll remember from now on I promise 😜
mike cafano (18 days ago)
I have the saw. It's a great saw
Dan2024 (24 days ago)
Did he just call himself a toolaphile?
Randy Wells (25 days ago)
looks like you have 3 saws is that another stihl saw in the atv
Meyilepshi Ao (26 days ago)
I mean does it work for 8 to 10 hour non stop
Jen Russell (3 days ago)
yes it will. you need gas, sharp chain, clean air filter.
Meyilepshi Ao (27 days ago)
How long does it work without stopping or the engine over heat
Stoney Ridge Farmer (26 days ago)
It runs until it runs out of gas my friend.

Excellent video review of the 311. 👍

CAL Ranch in Idaho Falls is where I bought my MS291. Mormonville.
John Clarke (1 month ago)
Needs to hit the gym. That’s probably true, but if you want a load try the 660. That sucker needs to really hit the gym. It weighs a good 25#. I am glad mine has a few problems because I do not have to tote it any more. I will take my 455 or 135 huskies any day of the week. Ask me why I have 8 saws and why I always take two saws afield? The same reason you do!
John Clarke (10 days ago)
You are welcome.
John Clarke (1 month ago)
I own your 311’s big brother, the 391, and I love it. The 391 is a little heavy but it will fly through big wood.
Minnesota outdoors (5 days ago)
I have the bigger brother to both the 391 and 311 I run a 362 C-M that saw with a 25" bar is super quick and really nice to use
late 68 (9 days ago)
Yeah I've got one too but it's a bitch to start going to start using high octane gas hopefully that'll make the starting problem go away
Stoney Ridge Farmer (1 month ago)
Yep the 391 is a great saw....the 311 is its value priced little brother...that needs to hit the gym!
John Clarke (1 month ago)
It is also better to start down at the base of the tree when limboing to keep it from jumping up on you.
John Clarke (1 month ago)
It is always better to let a new saw warm up before using. I always crank a new saw up and let it sit and idle for about five minutes before I use it.
WyoHorseman994 (19 days ago)
Yikes saws aren't supposed to sit at an idle for that long a minute tops to warm it up
Mc 44 (1 month ago)
You have beauty saw!

Ну и Ну (1 month ago)
Thank you Stoney Ridge Farmer for this amazing video. Thank you all for great comments. I am very new to chainsaws and don’t know anything about them. Need to ship one for dad overseas.. So some commented Stihl is better than Husqvarna and vice versa. I came to realize those two are like Apple and Galaxy phones, playstation vs xBox, or pepsi vs coke. Am I right? Please correct me if I’m wrong
KFStreich (1 month ago)
That tree. Would make my 660 feel small...
RON776 (1 month ago)
Stihl Chainsaws sells itself and always will!
Stoney Ridge Farmer (1 month ago)
I like Stihl....however I don't get the "Chainsaw brand loyalty" thing.....they most certainly aren't loyal to you....I like both my Stihl and my Husky......but I'll never buy another "poulan"!!! Ahhhhhh!!
Anthony S (1 month ago)
Hate Stihls, I think they are absolute garbage. Too many problems with starting and running. Sure, if you get a Stihl while its running its going to be a good chainsaw but so many tiny little insignificant things can stop it and shut it down with repeated repairs. Poor design that can not hold up and its extremely unreliable
Jen Russell (3 days ago)
yeah bro, absolute garbage for sure. Thats why pros and farmers love em. do you believe your opinion is a valid one. think it through.
north sneads (1 month ago)
Dude, just got me a 311 as well. I'm in florida panhandle and ol hurricane michael dropped 80% of the trees in my town. It's a beast of a saw.
Chad Gronsten (1 month ago)
MS311 sucks....They have no torque...The Oiler is weak. The emission plugs can be removed to tune the carb. A echo Timberwolf will eat its lunch. These saws do not hold up over time!!
Mike Fu (1 month ago)
I like Stihl, but my Personal favorite, is the old Homelite muscle saws(and McCulloch or gear drives)....it's like running a Jackhammer that cracks the air around you!! So alien sounding. Great for pissing off neighbors that live far away!
George Martin (1 month ago)
If you get a saw stuck, you can just pound a wedge in the cut behind it. Pow! problem solved! I only say this for a learning moment. I wish I had learned this trick years before I did.
chenmuzeluva (1 month ago)
thank you for your review...I am actually saving for a chainsaw & didn't have a clue on what to get...this at least gives me some sort of idea now! CHEERS!
gpsman007 (1 month ago)
YES, STIHL is the best
Man Man (2 months ago)
I don't know. I think my poulan wild thing with the big bore kit, msd ignition, hooker header, and the Garret turbo upgrades would stomp that. I would put head to head but my cold air intake isn't right at the moment XD
Adjizan jamien (2 months ago)
Damn thats a big chain

With a brush pile like that when is the wenne roast
Ullr the snow God (2 months ago)
I prefer Husky. But you have to buy the splined tool(s) to make it run perfect. If you are going to climb with a saw and use a one-hander it's Echo. I'm 5'9" 180lbs, so maybe that affects my choice of the Echo (lighter and higher rpms than all others) and Husky on the ground (lighter than Stihl.) I'm a landscape contractor, not a pro arborist or logger, so I'd be curious to read the opinions of others. I do use my saws in close proximity to $15M homes, but not on a daily basis. I will say Husky makes better mowers and hedgers than anyone (even Honda) but Echo makes the best blowers and trimmers.
Geni Bunsie (2 months ago)
Awesome saw bro...
Madmoody21 (2 months ago)
I don't know if it has a small engine and is made by Shindawa I would even sight unseen put it in the running for the best.
Todd Winter (2 months ago)
311 is homowner saw.. Spend little more get a 461magnum..it'll outlast and outcut that 311 many times over.. 311 is plastic. 461 is magnesium.. God be with you, peace
Jen Russell (3 days ago)
the 461 is like 3 steps up power wise. it is a beast to lug around all day. the 362 is lighter and has more power. the 261 is lighter still and only has .2 Hp less
Technie87' (2 months ago)
Your 6"5? More like you need a MS 880 with a 50' bar
Lass-in Angeles (2 months ago)
I need a guy like you, heh, heh! I have too much chopping to do on my trees and not enough muscle. Really appreciated this video, all the tips in comments as well, and the comparison. These days unbiased, honest reviews are so rare. Many thanks!! Would the smaller, lighter Stihl chain saws work as well? Please could you do a chainsaw maintenance video?
Simon Hopper (2 months ago)
Im ready for this comparison as i have a ms 290 but looking for something a bit bigger for the old big trees i have to cut up. So i have been looking at the ms 391 and husqvarna 465 rancher. So a comparison of a ms311 and 460 rancher might be a good comparison to compare to my needs. (Dont think i have ever used compare so much....lol)
Larry Bulthouse (2 months ago)
Chainsaws have chains not blades
WildeFox (2 months ago)
That seems like a great saw, I own both Husqvarna and Stihl products, both brands make great products. I know it's the improper way but I start my chainsaws the way you do lol.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (2 months ago)
Yeppers....man..lots of folks fussing at me for starting a saw that way.....I really never started a saw the "right way" in my life before I started making youtube vids.....now if I don't....ol safety Sam comes out in every video..lol it's pretty funny....man when your 6'5" it's hard to get down there to pull that cord !! Bhahhaha
Seamus Warren (2 months ago)
Hope someone can make something out of the oak. 👍🏼🤪 Edit: Strong timber! A bloke did a convincing TED talk about using timber instead of steel for high rise buildings.
Ken Gray (2 months ago)
Would have enjoyed the 362 more.
Jean AArouet (3 months ago)
Ever heard about cleanliness? Glad you mentioned the correct starting procedure as opposed to the momentum method. Glad to see you stopped the saw before climbing the log...however you didn't restart it the way you said safe. Right on the 'spike' as you call it. or dogs...trouble is they are so sharp an inexperienced person can injure themselves on the greater projection especially when changing chain. You don't use the dogs in your early demo, anyway. I think you should get a lung X-Ray ...you may have a lung disorder from dusts....I'm being serious.. I don't like the way you dropped the 'widow-maker'...dangerous as they can spin off and "get" the operator. I'd "V" underneath and not as deeply as your second (reconsidered) cut.....then work from the top. Why?.....it's a clearer drop as the tree is not working against itself as with a single straight cut and you can control from the top.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (3 months ago)
You're comment should be titled: Thanks for the video Josh...I enjoyed it...now let me pick you into little pieces and throw you in a toilet bowl full of urine and feces.....stir ya around a little bit and let it sit there....thanks for your wonderful comment.....I'm sure I have a lung disorder from laughing so hard at your comment
David Landsteiner (3 months ago)
You can get a 16,18,20, or 25 inch bar for a Stihl ms311.
dozer- Am-I (3 months ago)
There's no better saw than a Stihl ms261 Pro saw..... 10 lb 4.5 horsepower runs a 20 inch bar with a skip chain at 14000 RPMs.... SICK,!!
MrMrjones333 (3 months ago)

stihl is overrated. husky/jonsereds is better for sure. stihl under calibrates their oiler system. their air filtration sucks too. too much crap makes it to the filter

It’s pronounced “STEEL”!!!!!!!!

Stoney Ridge Farmer (3 months ago)

Maxwell Smart (3 months ago)
Don't forget your grapple. As a third hand, carrying and stacking 8+ footers to the 'processing' area (where you can also lay tarp to save sawdust). BTW - Have you considered a used 'full size' drum chipper so you can quit burning aall that mulch/chips? I keep going back and forth, no such thing as too much wood chips. :-)

kyle Griffiths (3 months ago)
Then caps on the saw suck. I’d much rather screw on caps
Abyssal_ Gaara (3 months ago)
Are you supposed to have that much slack on the chain or do you loosen it for storage?
Jim Yost (4 months ago)
I have a friend who owns a tree service and he said Stihls outlast Huskies because the Huskies have more RPMs. I have another friend who owns a tree service and he swears by Stihl saws. I've heard that Jonsered saws are as dependable as Stihl saws. I wonder if it's true.
Scott Brough (4 months ago)
The unsafe way to start your saw is the manliest way to start it.  I want a Stihl now.
Lance Rothman (4 months ago)
Stihl Has been the only power equipment brand out there that has ever given me trouble. Can't stand up to abuse, hard to work on, ridiculous pricing and parts prices. The 3 songs I readily trust, Echo, Dolkita, Husqvarna. 3 of the easiest brand of saws to work on :) The 311 was a boat anchor if I've ever seen one
Nomadic Dullard (4 months ago)
I had a Stihl 210(?) homeowner type saw. That was a great little saw! For bigger stuff I bought a 290 Farm Boss and thought it was a bit of a dog. Both were stolen and so I started the replacement process. I bought a Stihl 251as a replacement for the small saw. I hate that saw just for the starting issues it always seems to have since first month of ownership. For bigger stuff I got a Makita/Dolmar 6421. That one is a beast.
Anton Noles (4 months ago)
Hi guys, I'me an avid watcher of Stihl Reviews and Videos, I personally have 2, an MS461 & an MS880, with an eray of Bars, mainly a 25" for the 461 and from a 32 up to a 48 for the 880. Cutting some big Redum and various hardwoods, with both of these saws being in the "Magnum" range they are just outstanding. I give them every opportunity with freshly sharpened Stihl Full Chisel chains. It's just coming into summer here in Australia now and after seeing a nasty brown snake last week, I have packed up until next season. Keep up the good work everyone and stay safe.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
Watch my husky v/s stihl...you might not like the results...i was surprised
Curtis Durfee (4 months ago)
I start my saw like that
Aric Lange (4 months ago)
Dog’s not spikes
Frank Towles (4 months ago)
You are correct about not tight. My MS251 single bolt design stripped out right as the warrenty expired. If I ever get it back from the shop, I'll not tighten very much. It was a cutting beast while operational. I see your MS311 has two bolts for chain tightening. Looks like a real winner there on that one.
Rui Almeida (4 months ago)
i start all my saws the improper way too
Dan Latta (4 months ago)
Really like my Stihl chainsaw when it decides to start. Horrible experience just trying to get it to start and it's brand new.

Try the stihl 360 or 460 the 311 is a toy
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
Oh yea....cool...it'll get the job done brotha....dropping more than $500 on a saw seems expensive to me....unless I did it for a living
LCHLLO2008 (4 months ago)
i use Stihl hedgecutters ,strimmers and blowers ,but i prefer Husky saws .neither companies have let me down.I wouldn't use any other companies .
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
lol broke this Stihl today...was my fault though
gunnar schutz (4 months ago)
If that impresses you and ya cut large wood get a 461 28 inch sugahara bar. You'll like that.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
Yep that would be alot of saw for sure!
Texas Edge (4 months ago)
311 is a plastic clamshell. Never trust a review where the guy calls the bar and chain a blade. LOL. Echo timber wolf is way better saw than a 311.
Texas Edge (4 months ago)
+Stoney Ridge Farmer I run a 390xp. You need more than a plastic saw.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
LOL....this isn't a chainsaw competitition.....yet! Coming soon I'll do a comparison vid....it's been a great saw so far I've got about 10 hours behind it....just checked out your channel....the first thing you spoke about was trolling on youtube...still watching..ur a pretty big dude...look like you need a bigger saw than this STIHL...need like a honda 650 behind them arms WOOOOO!!!
1970 olds442 (4 months ago)
The blade is still sharp? Chainsaws do not have blades on them they have chain on them. Skill saw has a blade not a chainsaw. Maybe you should call it a bladesaw instead of chainsaw
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
Arguably ...every chain is covered with tiny blades......thanks for taking the time to try and insult my intelligence...it helps I swear...best thing about doing a chainsaw video is making a slip of the tongue and watching the comments roll in...keeps the momentum up on a video...youtube likes those comments...so do I .....hmm kinda makes ya wonder....did I make a mistake? Or set you up ? Hmmmm....
Kolila Gephart (4 months ago)
Between stihl  and husky  its about your dealer. If your gonna hand it down, toss-up. If  your doing a job  and then selling, the stihl  has a better resale.
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
I'm gonna run it till it falls apart...
ed christman (4 months ago)
i picked up a stihl ms 290 at a yard sale last weekend for 30$ starter rope was broke & guy said it was given to him like that & had no idea if it would run or not ! took it home fixed rope no workie gailded piston & cylinder. ordered a cylinder kit for 32$ on amazon & it ran but stil had issued . had a broken adjustment screw in carb . ordered a new carb for 14.99 amazon & runs like a dream less than 90$ in it & this model sells used on ebay for 200 -450$ but ill be putting this on to work my self !

I have had the "029" Stihl Chainsaw for 23 years here on the farm, and it still runs like new. Best tool ever.
Derek Rudkin (11 days ago)
John Casey the 0 Series Stihls Run way better than the new ones, I sold my old 029 & got a newer 290, I regret it, that old 029 would run circles around the 290
Gregory Cumming (4 months ago)
I hate stihl chainsaws. I have owned many, and will never buy another. The oil and fuel caps suck, and the vibration eliminator features of their equipment are completely overdun. Poor design all the way around. Husqvarna is far better
Gregory Cumming (4 months ago)
+Stoney Ridge Farmer I would also check the Stihl bar oiling system. If you check the internet, many people are unhappy with it. Even with it adjusted to maximum flo, the bar will become hot. Maybe they have overcome this problem, but all of my stihl saws suffered from it. Good luck
Stoney Ridge Farmer (4 months ago)
Well Gregory....we're gonna put brand new chains on both of these and do a side by side comparison. I'm pretty happy with both saws myself.....I do find that the Husky fuel and bar oil caps are sometimes tough to unscrew ..but the Stihl sprays ya with gas...so let's put them side by side and see how these farm saws do!
Nvr Dwn (4 months ago)

The sthil your testing there has a very major fault !!! The oil tank gets busted open very easily when a piece of brush swings around off the blade. I know this from experience...
m cole (4 months ago)
I love my "steel" saws as well .
Jamison Timberfalling (4 months ago)
Good point about having more than one saw. Everyone gets their saw pinched from time to time. It's funny how many people get hung up on certain brands of saws. It's more important to get the right saw for the job, and maintain it properly. I always recommend purchasing the professional grade saws. For that size Stihl, the 261 with a 20" bar would be a good choice.
evilknievellives (5 months ago)
Pre emissions husky 362xp the best. Also watch the vid where they dump saw dust on a Stihl and husky

First pull up on your bar then tighten until the chain touches the bar. Not tighten then pull up.
